10 of the best live action video game commercials

3. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

In the same vein of the live action Halo commercials before it, the Ghost Recon: Future Soldier trailer depicts a realistic interpretation of the game’s action sequences in the best way possible. The way the trailer is shot makes it look like a level walk-through, and I wouldn’t be surprised if games start looking a little bit like this once our hardware is capable of photo-realistic visuals. Top marks go to the stealth cloak action. It always goes down smooth.

2. Zelda: A Link to the Past

What is there to say about this trailer? It’s simply incredible that it can take something inherently bad ass like the Zelda series and make it unusual and obscure. And you don’t get much more obscure than J-rap from the 90’s. Androgynous protagonists? Check. Bizarre interpretive dance? Check. Dudes in costumes? Double check. This trailer is the weirdest thing I’ve seen in a while, but you can’t say it isn’t memorable as a result.

1. Halo 3

An obvious, but deserved number one spot for a real trend-setter. A realistic interpretation of the Halo world sounds ridiculous, but the Halo 3 trailer did it extremely well and also managed to create a riveting little short story out of it. The trailer is also the longest on the list, offering quality and quantity in equal measure. How many more trailers will imitate the real McCoy in the future I wonder?
