10 Of The Largest Maps In Video Games

With the next generation of game systems on the horizon, hardware power is becoming more and more of a concern. With this great power, comes huge games. Whereas we’ve discussed some of the largest open worlds and some of the longest games in previous features, this time we’re talking about individual maps.

Rather than looking at complete game worlds and their size, we’re talking about single levels and stages that are truly mammoth tasks, or at least ones that feel that way.

Do you agree with our list? Do you have anything else to add? Let us know in the comments section below.

How about Elder Scrolls Oblivion? You can travel continuously in a straight line unobstructed for 16 miles! No fast travel, no map boundries. And not even a mention on this list, LAME.

Is this the standard crap you post Gaming Bolt? If so, g’bye now.

Did anyone who commented bother to read the opening lines of the article?

They’re not talking about largest game worlds (e.g. the entirety of World of Warcraft, etc), they’re talking about single levels/missions which cover the most time/area.
Granted the article title doesn’t help

It seems the majority of people who commented on this didn’t actually read it. It says right at the beginning that he’s NOT TALKING ABOUT OPEN WORLDS, BUT RATHER, INDIVIDUAL MAPS, “single levels and stages that are truly mammoth tasks, or at least ones that feel that way.” Though I’m not so sure that the Shadow of the Colossus overworld really fits into that description…. And he specified again in his description of the Water Temple that he wasn’t just talking about literal size, but also how long the level seems, and how large of a challenge it seems to him. That, of course, is a matter of opinion. For example, the Water Temple has a bit of a reputation for being one of the hardest Zelda dungeons ever. I personally, found the Water Temple to be very easy. Furthermore, I loved the Water Temple’s boss, (it taught me the word “amoeba,”) but the writer of this article was not such a fan of it. On top of that, this is not truly a bad list, nor is it a good list. It all depends on your point of view. Everything is relative. There will be those who agree, and those who disagree, and lots who are somewhere in between. And then there will be lots more who don’t even fully listen to you in the first place and assume that you’re disagreeing with them and that you must be wrong.

I can name 5 games right now that shame each of those games. I’ll be bypassing all MMORPG’s such as aion, wow, etc.. since every mmo is supposed to have massive maps.

    1) Arma Series (Has THE most massive maps of pretty much any game, altis alone takes about 10 hours to walk across, and there’s about 30 different maps for arma alone that can hold a candle to altis…)

    2) Darkfall (Again, huge map.)

    3) Red Dead Redemption

    4) Any GTA series

    5) Any Elder Scrolls Game

    And so many more….

What, no Assassin’s Creed IV? That is one of the largest maps I’ve ever played

The list is not bad. Its about the biggest maps, not about the biggest world^^ Games like Fallout, WoW, Skyrim etc actualy are almost sandboxes. Its one huge map. Not map after map, lvl after lvl. True , there are dungeons, etc in that games to, but you can reach them all, from the main map. ^^

    Oh, I’m sorry.

I didn’t realize that I was on the list for “gaming’s smallest maps”.

  • Evan Balot

What about Elder Scrolls II? That game’s map had the real-time size of great Britain. It would take you two real-world weeks to walk from one end of the map to the other.

  • TheHaggisHunter

arma maps are bigger than all of these

The only one that deserves to be on this list that’s actually in it is Planetside.

Operation Flashpoint, Armed assault, most MMO’s (Star Wars Galaxies has huuuuge maps even for an MMO and it pales in comparison to EVE), all the Elder Scrolls games, Freelancer, Fallout etc. etc.

Whoever made this list must be playing the sims all day or something…

  • Hellsvien

    Dagger fall is the biggest.
