Unlocking Sonic in Smash Bros.

Kids these days have it easy. You want Mario and Sonic in the same game? Here: buy Mario and Sonic at the Olympics Games. Hell, want them to fight? Buy the latest Smash Bros. and pit them against each other. Kids didn’t know back in the day that if you wanted Sonic and Mario you had to own two totally different consoles and at least two different games. It was madness! When the original Super Smash Bros. was released on Nintendo 64 in 1999 a rumor spread through the the now defunct EGM magazine that unlocking Sonic and Tails as playable characters was indeed possible. The only problem? It wasn’t. Sega still had a console of their own and putting their most popular characters on their direct competitor’s consoles made no sense. Of course, EGM was a monthly magazine so most Smash Bros. players didn’t figure it out until the May issue. This one stung!
