Among the many exciting announcements made at E3 2009 was word that Final Fantasy VII would immediately be making its way to the Playstation Store as a PSone classic. This is exciting for several reasons. First of all, the game is amazing. Final Fantasy VII was arguably more groundbreaking for the RPG genre than any other game before it. Although the game’s graphics have not aged well, at the time they were the best available, and the game’s story is surpassed by few – if any.
Another reason this announcement is great for gamers is that ever since production of the Greatest Hits version of the game was ceased, finding a copy of the game has been a hassle. Even on wallet-friendly auction sites such as Ebay, copies of the game can reach as much as $50-$100. For gamers eager to play such a great classic, this is a hefty price. However, the Playstation Store now offers a digital download of Final Fantasy VII in its original glory for the very doable price of $9.99. As a proud owner of both the disc-based and digital-based copies of the game, I guarantee the game is worth every penny.
As with other PSone classics on the PSN, Final Fantasy VII can be played on the PSP. What better way to spend a road trip than playing Final Fantasy VII? I can’t think of any. If you’re a sly veteran looking to rekindle an old flame or someone who never got the chance to play the original, Final Fantasy VII on the Playstation Store is worth a look.
