Halo Reach: Microsoft’s Ace In the Hole
-

2009: according to many has been a year that belongs to Sony. With scintillating games like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Infamous, Killzone 2 and Ratchet and Clank Future: Crack in Time on the Playstation 3, it was never a doubt in the mind of a neutral gamer that who is running away with the show. Microsoft has had an average year, And please don’t term me as a fan boy. The Xbox 360 is my primary console but even with some great games like Forza 3, Microsoft has had nothing this year. Some may say that Halo Wars was one of the biggest games of the year. To be honest it is not. 2009 is a year that Xbox 360 fans and Microsoft should probably forget about. After three successful years with the Xbox 360 (2005-2008), it was a bit of pain for the fans to see that the 360 had no real AAA experience this year.

Will the sun rise for Xbox 360?

Will the sun rise for Xbox 360?

But all is said and done. Year 2009 is almost going to wrap in the couple of months. So what does Microsoft have in the bag in 2010 against heavy weight PlayStation 3 exclusives like God of War 3, The Last Guardian, Gran Turismo 5 and Heavy Rain? An immediate answer to this would be Alan Wake and Splinter: Cell Conviction which are due in early 2010. Friends there is a small list of great games for the 360 in the year 2010, but I will have to say that Halo: Reach will be bigger than any of those games combined. And We will prove why this will be the only weapon that Microsoft has against Sony. Microsoft released their original Xbox against the really strong software line up of PlayStation 2. Back in 2001 the Playstation 2 had some really strong games in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Grand Theft Auto III and against those heavy weights what did Microsoft do? They along with Bungie released Halo: Combat Evolve, the first game in the renowned franchise. On its release the game started to break records, within six months of its release the game had sold more than one million copies worldwide, which was faster than any of the current games during that generation. The game finally sold over 5 million copies worldwide and laid the foundation of a huge fan base that was anxiously awaiting the release for the next Halo game.

Bundle packages for Halo Reach will go a long way!

Bundle packages for Halo Reach will go a long way!

Three years later in 2004. While Microsoft’s Xbox was pounded by the PlayStation 2 in terms of sales, Bungie delivered the most important game for Microsoft and perhaps the most anticipated game in the video game industry: Halo 2. The situation was similar as to what had happened before in 2001. Sony again had a blockbuster range of games like Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Jak 3 and Killzone. Halo 2’s release was a major success not only for Bungie but for Microsoft’s dying Xbox. The game sold over 2 million copies within 24 hours of its release and made $125 million and what’s more the game became the highest grossing product in entertainment history, let alone video games history. The game was very well received by the critics, selling over 8 million copies as well. 2007, again a period of three years. Bungie came up with Halo 3, which was planned to be the last game in the franchise. As always with a Halo game, Microsoft hyped up the game immensely like promotions, commercials and other marketing gizmo. But the scenario this time, it was way different. PlayStation 3 was struggling with exclusives and had no big games other than Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. Halo 3 was the winner all along with the game breaking its predecessors record by some distance with a gross cash of $170 million.

Can history repeat itself?

Can history repeat itself?

Two years later in the present: 2009. There were two Halo spin offs with Halo Wars and Halo 3: ODST with none of them as big as the previous ones. 2009 was the complete opposite to what had we had in the previous years. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was the real “Halo” and Halo 3: ODST was just another exclusive for Xbox 360. So with market conditions changing and Xbox 360 slowing down this year, Microsoft still has a Ace In the Hole: Halo Reach. Microsoft knows this very well that Halo: Reach has the potential to outsell and outperform its competitors. I hope Microsoft markets this game in the same way as it did for Halo 3, like movie tie ins and free give aways. The officials should know that even though Alan Wake and Conviction will be big, the difference that Halo: reach can make for the Xbox 360 could be the defining factor in holidays 2010. The situation will be the same again in 2010.  Big games for the PlayStation 3 will be released and Microsoft will have Halo: Reach. So folks do you think will history repeat itself?

Not hilarious, but logical. Naughty Dog delivered a worthy sequel with a brilliant single player and a completely new multiplayer, and setting new standards while doing so.
Halo 3 ODST was a short SP, same multiplayer you already paid for plus one new gamemode, without updating the graphics. With 10m copies sold, Bungie could have given their fans their firefights for free, or a couple of points, but now we see fans defending MS charging full price, again.

There’s no real story linkage between FF games, Their all completely different games. and dos is right there’s several years between recent FF games. So you STFU jackass! If Bungie keeps cranking out Halo games once a year. Halo 9 will be pinball game.

Hilarious is paying 50 bucks a year so everythings looks the same & Phil shooting aliens can chitchat with Pete shooting zombies, and keep on defending it while the other sevice remains free, has no/very little lag, supports 40-60-256 players and allows LBP’s and MNR’s usercreated levels and tracks, and dedicated servers for most of the exclusives. And less chitchat, I know it’s possible to wisecrack to a m8 stuck in a Gears2 match when there’s only 7 opponents on your track, but I myself don’t want that in the midle of the pack in a 16 player online GT5 NASCAR race, and my buddy in a 256 player MAG-battle definitely doesn’t want that. Problem is it will be available when those games release early next year=)

Halo: Reach is probably going to sell a fair few copies, which is all well and good, but the problem is Microsoft needs Reach to ship consoles as well, which I’m afraid it might not do.

Anyone who bought a 360 for the Halo franchise has done so already, so while sales of the game will be strong I doubt it will boost console sales dramatically. This does not bode well for Microsoft simply because Sony is facing the opposite. Fans of Gram Turismo, God of War and Final Fantasy are just waiting for these games to release to jump on-board. And while FF is being released on 360 in the US, it’s in Japan that FF receives the majority of it’s sales, so FF only being on PS3 over there pretty much ensures a good 2-3 million head start in sales.

Also, Stephander, you sound like a pretty big idiot yourself, so reframe from labelling other people idiots as well

overrated or not is your opinion not fact, and actually no one thinks FF12 is anything special and 13 is not out yet so I failed to see how they’re overrated

also if you think FFX is overrated is because you haven’t play it

and before those the gap between FF games was around 2 or 3 years, never once a year like Halo

what people need to understand is that Microsoft is keeping the 360 alive basically with Halo spinoffs only and they’re not even AAA anymore

even if Sony’s games have many sequels, there’s like 7 AAA franchises to choose from, not one, and every year there’s a new one like Infamous this year or Little Big Planet last year or Uncharted 1 the year before, Halo didn’t even originate on the 360, they’re milking an IP from last gen

360 attempts to create new franchises have failed (too human, ninja blade, velvet assassin) so they stopped trying and instead come up with a sequel to a game that was only successful because it had a Halo beta invite

Sony failed with some new IPs like Heavenly Sword or Haze but they keep coming up with new ones, Microsoft keeps milking Halo because they have nothing else

      @doa766:

“and before those the gap between FF games was around 2 or 3 years, never once a year like Halo”

Halo: Combat Evolved – released 2001
      Halo 2 – released 2004
      Halo 3 – released 2007
      Halo 3: ODST – released 2009
      Halo Wars – released 2009

thats a fair bit more than 12 months between them. Halo Wars was made by someone else, and ODST is an expansion, much like GTAIVs Ballad of Gay Tony etc.

every ps3 fanboy under the sun says halos being milked, but then look at the sony franchises:

      Gran Turismo – GT, GT2, GT3, GT4, GT5 soon, GT:HD, GT Concept, GT4: Prologue, GT5: Prologue = 9 games in total
God of War – God of War 1, God of War 2, God of War Chains of Olympus, God of War 3 soon = 4 games in total
Jak and Daxter – Jak and Daxter, Jak 2, Jak 3, Jak X, Daxter, Jak and Daxter the lost frontier coming soon = 6 games in total
Metal Gear Solid – Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gears Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, Metal Gear Solid VR Missions, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker soon, Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops Plus, Metal Gear Acid, Metal Gear Acid 2 = 12 games in total
Resistance Fall of Man – Restance, Resistance 2, Resistance Retribution = 3 games in total
Ratchet and Clank: Ratchet and Clank, Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Ratchet: Deadlocked, Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time soon = 9 games in total

do you see what im getting at here? sony fanboys have no right to say that Microsoft are milking Halo. whats that they say about people in glass houses and stones?

how is Halo 3: ODST not as big as the others? sure, it didnt quite sell as many on release as Halo 3 – but it still sold over 2 million within a day or 2. thats more than any PS3 game ever has, even Uncharted 2. hell, it sold more in 24 hours than killzone 2 has sold in TOTAL.

sales only matter to shareholders, for people who play games how “big” games are depends only on its quality, and with that in mind Killzone 2 was much bigger than Halo 3 ODST

Halo 3 ODST was 60 dollars for a 4 hour campaign and a new MP mode

i finished killzone 2 on normal difficulty in 6 hours first go. ODST took me about 8-9. Killzone 2 is not bigger. im not a huge halo fan, but ODST is IMO better overall than killzone 2. better controls, better online, better framerate.

        better frame rate?
ODST drops to bellow 25FPS at times where killzone 2 was LOCKED to 30, IT NEVER EVER EVER dropped bellow 30.
play halo ODST on the hardest difficulty, do the same for KZ2 and lets see which one is longer.

yes, better framerate. Killzone 2 is definitely not locked to 30fps lol.

halo 3 on the hardest difficulties is one of the hardest games around, same with ODST. ODST might even be harder because of no recharging health. KZ2 is a walk in the park compared to halo 3.

your post only proves my point, Microsoft has ONLY one franchise to milk, by the time Halo Reach comes out, they will have released 3 full price Halo games in less than two years

Sony has 7 or 8 different franchises to milk, and they create new ones every year (2007: Uncharted, 2008: little big planet, 2009: Infamous, 2010 Heavy Rain), Microsoft keeps milking Halo because they have nothing else

To busy playing U2 and other great games sony has to offer. MW2 will have to wait for me i cant stop playing U2 multiplayer(best single player campaign ever by the way), and after the ratchet and clank demo i think im sold on that one. Im getting tired of the call of duty series, i did not like the story for MW only the multiplayer. World at war was ok the only thing i like about it is nazi zombies and MW2 will not have zombies so MW2 will be a rent for me. Of course it will sell better on 360 thats all you guys have. Left 4 dead was the shittiest game i ever played and i was really excited about that game. Left 4 dead 2 looks even worse. I am still playing infamous trying to get my platinum trophy, i have played through the game 3 times and had a blast everytime. Sony just has all the good games, Next year GOD OF WAR 3 will kick master chiefs ass. Hell the god of war collection will be 10 times better than halo odst and its only 40 bucks. Man you MS fags like getting a new one ripped dont all the time huh.

OK, seriously, every time I see something about a new game for either side, the fan-boys gear up and head into battle. I’m a PS3 fan-boy at heart, have been since the original, I love my PS3 and my PSP to death. I still want a 360 like bad though, Gears is good, Halo is great, and Bioware is dear to my heart, so I LOVE Mass Effect. Final Fantasy needs to find a way to make better names than just adding numbers, I love all of them, but Final Fantasy 15 times, or whatever they’re up to now in spin-offs and main titles, is getting a bit dragged on. Microsoft needs to milk the Halo Cow, its a great Universe, and I’m curious to see where it leads, even though I have never owned one, I enjoy the series. I know we all have loyalties to own consoles, but quit bitching at each other, acknowledge these great games, and get over yourself. If Naughty Dog, Infinity Ward, and Bungie can collaborate together and play ball, then so can the fan-boys.

    banjo kazooie
    conkers

    kameo
blue dragon (new in last few years)
    dead or alive
shadowrun (new in last few years)
shadow complex (new in last few years)

i would like to see a new IP being the fore run of the 360 im sick of this halo crap!
would be nice to see a platformer or action game like uncharted or R&C or god of war.
when it comes to genres sony has them all covered.
racers, FPS, platformers, hack and slash, action games, kid games there all there.
all the 360 has is FPS, TPS and a few racers thats it.
actually one both are missing is a kick ass replacement for the getaway or GTA or DRIVER.
3 of my all time favorite games, the getaway 3 is canned, DRIVER has not received a sequel in ages and GTA well the less said about GTAIV the better.
that was the biggest disappointment of the generation!

    you’re really slow, aren’t you?

of all the games you listed the only two are part of franchises originated this generation: gears of war and crackdown, all the rest started well before the 360 and some not even on the first xbox

if there’s only one failed game like too human or kameo it’s not a franchise

Epic’s boss already confirmed there won’t be anymore more gears this gen and crackdown was only successful because of the Halo 3 beta invite and it’s in no way AAA, just an average open world actioner

like I said 360 has nothing besides Halo

      2. too human will get a sequel. it was always planned as a trilogy. how do franchises start out? with one game. going by what youre saying NOW, what you said in your previous post about Sony making new franchises in infamous and little big planet is incorrect because they are only single games at the moment. hypocritical at all?

      3. the epic bosses did NOT confirm that, you – along with all the other sony fanboys – misinterpreted.

      4. crackdown was successful because its a very good game. yes, its sales were bolstered by the halo 3 beta, but it was very well received by critics and gamers alike.

let me make it more clear to you Joe:

when I said that 360 has nothing besides Halo I was talking about big AAA games to look forward to, not sequels to average or Ok games

of that kind 360 has Halo and Gears of War and since there won’t be any more Gears for the 360 then it’s only Halo

PS3 has lots of big franchises with games to look forward to : Resistance 3, Final Fantasy versus 13, Uncharted 3, Agent from Rockstar, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3, Agent, The Getaway, The Last Guardian, God of War 3, etc

even considering unannounced games what is there to look forward on the 360 besides more halo games? kameo 2? dead or alive whatever number? more exclusive DLC for a year and half old game? viva piñata 2? the fading chance of a new shemue?

you see what I mean when I say “nothing”?

inFamous is not AAA if Crackdown is not. theyre both sitting on roughly the same on metacritic – infamous 85, crackdown 83. alan wake is AAA. splinter cell conviction, which i didnt even mention, is AAA. project gotham racing is AAA.

why would you look forward to resistance 3 and call it a ‘big franchise’? resistance 1 was mediocre, only selling well and being well received because it was the only semi-decent game (even though it looked and played like a PS2 game) available for the first 6 months of the PS3s release, and resistance 2 just plain sucked. final fantasy versus 13? doesnt bother 360 RPG fans because they get the main game, FF13. Uncharted 3? Uncharted 2 JUST came out literally a week or 2 ago and youre already saying youre looking forward to Uncharted 3?! epic lol. in that case, 360 fans have Left4Dead 3, Forza 4, the sequel to Halo Reach, and Alan Wake 2 to look forward to. Agent? youve seen literally NOTHING of it. it might be complete rubbish. GT5? sorry, but Forza 3 has beaten it to the punch, and GT5 will NOT be better than it unless they went back to the drawing boards after prologue and started from scratch.

killzone 3 has promise, when they actually announce it that is. fix the controller input lag, get some decent story writers, and make the single player campaign twice as long and then we’ll see how it goes.

then you go and talk about unannounced games lol. if the games are unannounced, how can you know there are no awesome new franchises being made? remember, gears of war was unannounced not long ago, and it was brand new. same with crackdown and half the other franchises. everything starts off somewhere.

you don’t need a crystal ball to know which games failed and won’t get a sequels and which ones will become a franchise

little big planet is already a franchise because for he PSP version which is a completely different game, Infamous had great reviews, good sales and has a movie adaptation confirmed, you don’t think there’ll be a sequel? on the PS3 Heavenly Sword failed to become a succesful IP

too human was a failure and there won’t any more sequels, many games left open endings in hope of more iterations but those are not made because the game plot, trhey’re only made if they’ll make money (I’m still waiting for another Dino Crisis to continue the trilogy and the twist ending of the second part)

we can’t pass judgement on Alan Wake but if it took five year of development I doubt there will be another one for the 360

and are you honestly saying Lips and Viva Piñata are games that 360 owners are looking foward for its sequels like PS3 owners look forward for more killzone, zone of the enders, uncharted, resistance, the last guardian or infamous for example?

besides Gears (no more for 360) and Halo (spinoffs) the 360 only has minor games

if you really think that you must dumber that you sound

i guess you missed Dino Crisis 3 on the xbox?……..why does that not surprise me? lol

alan wake has taken like 5 years, correct – but once its complete, the engine is complete and a sequel can come out much quicker. again using your stupid logic, it would mean that Killzone 3 wont come out for at least another 5 years, since Killzone 2 took over 5 years to make.

im looking forward to more viva pinata games, because they are genuinely good. they sell horribly, but the critics also love them. again i point to metacritic – the original is sitting on 84/100. ive got a PS3 and im not looking forward to resistance 3 at all, or killzone 3 if its gonna be like killzone 2. infamous 2 doesnt excite me either, since the original was boring and repetitive with poor graphics. Zone of the Enders 3 could very well be on the 360 too IF they ever make it.

I’m going to sleep now (it’s 5 AM here) but let me leave you with a little mental exercise to see if you get it:

right now Uncharted is biggest PS3 franchise in popularity and reviews, let’s assume for a second that there was no uncharted 2 and no upcoming uncharted 3. It wouldn’t be that big of a deal for Ps3 owners, there would still be plenty of games to fall back on after Q12010 like Resistance 3, Killzone 3, The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy versus 13, mod nation racers, Agent, etc

Now think for a second what would be 360 without ODST and the prospect of Halo Reach in a year or so. It would be a disaster, no big alternatives after Q12010, nothing to look forward other than Natal which is MS’s focus from now on, there’re no other AAA franchises with upcoming sequels after Q12010 for the 360, not for 2010 or 2011, no new IPs, nothing, like I said nothing other than Halo

the only hope is they can bribe another company making multiplats AAAs to make their next game an exclusive (like the Splinter Cell franchise which if you don’t remember has a game on the PS3)

lol now mod nation racers is a big AAA game that everyones looking forward to?! now ive heard it all. its another of those games that the only people that are hyping it are the PS3 fanboys who hype every PS3 exclusive. the rest of the game playing population thinks it looks rubbish.

you dont know what games microsoft have planned. unlike Sony, Microsoft announce most of their games around 6 months before release. back in 08 when sony fanboys were laughing cause microsoft hadnt announced anything midway through the year, people like me that know how microsoft work just laughed at them and said ‘youll see’. then Gears of War 2 gets announced for release in 6 months time and those PS3 fanboys shut their mouths. this year it was the same thing – then BAM! Forza 3 announced, shown, and a firm release date set for 6 months time – and it hit that release date.

its always the way microsoft work, yet the idiot sony fanboys fail to realise it. sony announce games the second they have a piece of concept art drawn, hype everyone up, but then take 4-5 years to get that game out.

youre seriously deluded if you think that microsoft do not have any new IPs coming through in development lol. Rare were rumoured to have 2 new ones to announce at E3, but then they pulled them out – expect to see them later on.

To the writer: You say MS had an average year with basically “nothing” and at the same time ask people not to term you as a fanboy.
Then how should we term you based on your claims? As an Idiot?

After all, your claim is that Sony had a great year based on 4 Games: R&C, Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 and Infamous. A smart person would add Demons Souls to that list (and I see someone here already did). That’s two 9′ers and three 8′ers

On the other hand, Microsoft had this year Forza 3, ODST, Halo Wars, Liberty City Stories and the upcoming L4D2. That’s also 5 games with two 9′ers and two 8′ers so far (we will have to see how L4D2 plays out, but expect nothing less than excellent from Valve).

So you see, you base your assumption that Sony had “a great year” based on 5 good games (actually 4, because you forgot one) and MS had “nothing” based again on 5 good games which you seem to neglect.
And then you are asking not to be called “a fanboy”. But one must be either a delusional fanboy, an ignorant moron, or a troll looking for N4G hits in order to make such a claim. So which one are you?

One more note on “milking” franchises: how come stupid Sony fanturds always bring up this issue when talking about Halo, but forget it when they praise R&C (which had twice as many games (9) in a shorter lifespan (7 years) – now that’s what I call milking)

I begged my poor friend who has a 360 to buy L4D and when we played he looked at me and said you owe me money man this game blows lets play some nazi zombies. Please sony stop trying to help VALVE come to your platform we dont need their piece of shit software infecting our AAA library
