Command & Conquer Generals 2 Becomes F2P RTS at GamesCom 2012

Posted By | On 15th, Aug. 2012

Here’s an interesting little twist: Command & Conquer Generals 2, previously announced by Electronic Arts, is instead being released as a free-to-play game titled simply, Command & Conquer. This new online platform and service is set to launch in 2013. The Generals Universe will be only one of the free offerings to arrive in the next few months.

EA vice president and general manager Jon Van Caneghem said, “For nearly two decades, this franchise has existed as something you buy; now we are creating a destination where our fans will be able to access the entire Command and Conquer universe, starting with Generals and continuing with Red Alert, Tiberium, and beyond.”

Currently, gamers can sign up for a chance to take part in the closed beta. The game will run on the Frostbite 2 engine, and will apparently feature “the cutting-edge visuals, sound and destruction of a full, AAA strategy game”.

What can we say? Free-to-play is the rule of way now.
