Dead Rising 4 is a survival horror action-adventure that also qualifies as a beat em up game. This is the fourth in what has now become a rather long running series and the second one that has been released on current generation consoles. This game is being developed by Capcom and published by Microsoft.

The game is going to be released first on Microsoft Windows and the Xbox One, while the game won’t be available on the PS4 for a full year. Dead Rising 4 is slated for a December  2016 release on the Xbox One and Windows 10.

Development

Talk about Dead Rising 4 started as long ago as 2013 but Capcom then went pretty silent on what they had planned for the game. In January of 2016, the company announced it was working on two new open world type games but it did not elaborate on what those games might be. In the early part of June, leaks started popping up that Dead Rising 4 was going to be unveiled official at E3 later that month. About one week later, Capcom did indeed confirm it was working on the fourth installment in this series after screenshots leaked that not only showed the setting of the game but also the main protagonist, Frank West.

At the same time the company announced the game, by revealing that it would be following in the footsteps of Dead Rising 3 in that it would only be coming to the Xbox One and Windows 10 at least for a while. Unlike its predecessor, Dead Rising 4 will not only be on those two platforms indefinitely. The company announced Windows 10 store will have a three-month head start on other PC platforms like Steam and GoG.

This game will feature the return of Frank West, the hero of Dead Rising and the developers are also trying to merge the newer mechanics they’ve used in the last few entries, and the story telling aspects of the first game. Executive producer Bryce Cochrane talked about what the development team wants to do at SDCC in the summer of 2016. “We’re trying to merge everything together right now. It’s still fast-paced, but it’s a bit more measured [than Dead Rising 3]. We went way deeper with explorable areas, and dug down into a sewer system beneath the city of Willamette.”

On August 18, 2016 the developers announced they were removing the timer feature since it has been less than popular with the players, despite the fact that it has been in most Dead Rising games that preceded Dead Rising 4.

Story

Dead Rising 4

Dead Rising 4 features the return of Frank West to the series. West was the protagonist from the original Dead Rising game. This time around, West has returned to the setting of the original game as well, Willamette, Colorado. While there isn’t a great deal known about the story behind the game, we do know the setting is holiday time, though West is likely not really feeling all that festive.

By the looks of the trailers, it certainly appears as though he is stuck in the area and is trying to fight his way out. This isn’t a situation where he was the last survivor. This appears to be a situation where West went back in and is intentionally in the middle of a zombie hoard.

Gameplay

Dead Rising 4 (16)

Dead Rising 4, as has been the case with all the games in this series, is told from a third-person point of view. The game puts the player in the shoes of Frank West, a photojournalist who needs to fight his way out of Willamette. While there are specific missions that need to be carried out in order to complete the game, this is an open world sandbox game. That means the player can go all over the world and do all kinds of different things with the end result usually being that you’re going to kill as many zombies as possible.

As has been the case with the other games in the series, one of the best ways to go about killing the zombies is by putting together crazy weapons. The developers have said almost anything in the world of Dead Rising 4 will be able to be crafted into a weapon. There are all kinds of different vehicles that players will be able to be create and then crafted in order to get around Willamette. One weapon that can turn all other weapons into zombie killing machines is the exo-skeleton.

Dead Rising 4 has a single player mode in the game but there is no multiplayer, online or local option.

Characters

Dead Rising 4_02

While it’s possible there will be other characters in the game, so far, all the information we have on Dead Rising 4 is that Frank West is the only playable character. The other characters in the game are largely going to be zombies, though it’s possible the players will be able to meet other NPCs that are human. So far, there hasn’t been an explanation as to why Frank has returned to Willamette in the heart of a zombie horde.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game
