Development

Enemy Front had a long development period that was riddled with delays and changing release windows. The game first surfaced and was said to be development some time in 2011 under the Polish publisher and developer CI Games, formerly known as City Interactive.

The first set back that saw Enemy Front stay in development hell was when it was first delayed, the laundry list of changes range from delays of over a year to entire features being added and removed from the game. Given that the developers said that Enemy Front is “the first truly modern WW2 FPS, featuring stunning visuals, open-ended levels and a richly interactive combat experience that breaks out of the standard model of highly linear scripted FPS experiences, giving the player full freedom to own their playing style”, players and critics have been left a little disgruntled.

Initially set to be launching sometime late in 2012 (presumably Q4 for the holiday sales) the game was delayed until an unspecified date in early 2013. This early 2013 date was then reneged on and the release was moved a rather large period of time to spring 2014. The game finally emerged from development hell on June 10th when it was released in the US on June 10, Australia on June 12, and finally Europe on June 13.

As mentioned above, some features have been added and removed from the game since development began in 2011. This includes the removal of a level themed on the evacuation at Dunkirk, also known as operation Dyanmo that was an operation designed to evacuate allied forces from French beaches after their forces were cut off from and surrounded. Another feature that was featured heavily in trailers for the game and some promotional art, was also removed. The Lanchester Submachine Gun, a weapon that originated in the United Kingdom, it was primarily used by the fighting forces of the British Royal Navy and on sometimes by the Royal Air Force in the defence of airfields. This weapon was featured as one of the games “signature weapons” and as of yet, we don’t know why it was removed.

The reason given for a lack of a PS4 and Xbox One version was  proven to be partially untrue given that Microsoft has stated that Xbox One Development began in 2010, leaving some fans to question the developers. The game includes a multiplayer suite that supports three game modes including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Radio Transmission. These modes were said to make use of dedicated servers, but this too has proven to be a questionable matter.

Story

Set against the backdrop of the Warsaw Uprising, an operation of great importance ran by the Polish Resistance Home Army to liberate Warsaw, the capital city of Poland. Players are tasked with taking control of Robert Hawkins, an American War correspondent turned fighter as he fights alongside the soldiers of the resistance movement who are opposing the Nazi war machine.

Gameplay

Enemy Front Xbox 360

Gameplay in Enemy Front is the usual first person shooter affair seeing the player take their character through a series of world war II locales as they fight against the Nazi war machine. The events of the game play out through a series of flash backs that include real historic events from the war with the developers saying on the games official website, “Intense Combat, Sniping, Stealth and Sabotage – all are viable approaches for the player, maximizing player engagement and replayability.”

The game has multiplayer support with three gameplay modes available, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Radio Transmission.

Characters

Enemy Front features a diverse cast of characters, ranging from the American war correspondent Robert Hawkins, a female French resistance fighter, a commando that hails from Norway and even a Germany from the Special Operations Executive.
