Hacking the 3DS could render the system “unplayable”

Nintendo are warning against modifying or hacking 3DS systems lets the handheld become “unplayable.”

The warning that is printed on the back of 3DS game boxes states that “This product contains technical protection measures. Any unauthorised technical modification to your Nintendo 3DS system or the use of an unauthorised device with your system may render this game and / or your system unplayable.”

Will Nintendo go as far as to brick handhelds that they suspect to be running modified and hacked firmware? Nintendo have certainly been outspoken regarding the increased anti-piracy features of the 3DS, but only time will tell how extreme these new measures will be.

Companies r gonna go out of there way on security after the whole PS3 root key debacle. This is not good news for the mod community.

    • tareq salah

yes, it feels like the modding days are getting closer to the end.

  • That’s all fine and well but they need to realize that money’s not always a problem. A lot of the people who have hacked previous systems are people who had the money to buy the system with complete disregard for it’s well being. They can affor another or even multiple, so if hacking is trial and error, don’t you think they’ll crack it eventually?

    • tareq salah

yeah but what nintendo is doing is actually more aggressive and cleaver than what sony is doing, they say listen we arn’t going to waste time and money chasing you and your paypal account, you mess with our product and its bricked so its ur lose not ours, we already sold it and made money.

  • doub7

Yeah those hackers r geniuses, they will figure it out eventually. Think it was a good idea by MS 2 embrace the Kinect mods. It seems like the more u try & stop them the more they wanna hack it.

    • tareq salah

i think the kinect is a different story. it was meant to be hacked so microsoft can see what boundaries can be pushed by the kinect and what future businesses can benefit from it. it’s a brilliant device. microsoft will eventually drop kinect 2 and 3rd generations after they see what can be added to it.

    • PilarVIRUS

Nah.. not evil, just easy… I mean, they want to send a message to hackers everywhere.

As has been proven with the PS3, theres always someone out their smarter than the developers. give it by christmas and there will no doubt be sum form of homebrew knocking around.

I really can’t see Nintendo ever bricking a console deliberately. BTW are Nintendo actually threatening to brick consoles that are found with a mod or is this just the usual scare tactics? I’m pretty sure it’s unlawful on Nintendo’s part but I’m really not sure what is and isn’t legal these days. You own the device in the same way you own your toaster, just not the software that runs it. So can they legally completely brick consoles?

  • PilarVIRUS

I bet you GeoHotz going to find away 😀

    • tareq salah

loool i don’t know, he could be in cancun sipping on pina colada by now :p

    • PilarVIRUS

Yeah, but he’ll be back. They always come back.

  • doub7

Its all part of his master plan. He’s gonna get Sony & Nintendo all over him, & leverage it 4 a job @ Microsoft 😛

    • tareq salah

loool i’m actually surprised companies haven’t realized by now that this kid is too much of a brain and talent to be chased. it i was sony i would have given him the job of making the next play station unhackable, idiots.

    • PilarVIRUS

Yeah… just because Sony sued him once this is all over, he’ll just start hacking something else. He’s a genius and he needs to get a job doing the thing that he loves, he should be a good hacker.

  • tareq salah

lol i think if all fails these companies will be like, (warning, if you try to hack this device it will explode in your face and you will die)

    • PilarVIRUS

Or it may say that it will burn out your eyes… IN 3D!

  • doub7

Yeah u would have thought sum1 would have wanted this guy on their side by now, he is obviously a extremely intelligent guy. I think Sony was so embarrassed by the root key incident that they will stop @ nuthin 2 make him pay & save face.

    • tareq salah

but that would make sony look evil. just give him a job. he will stop hacking sony products and they would look good by acquiring talent and not watse time and millions chasing a kid like him. but then you would find thousands staring to hack products for a chance to work for big companies.

  • doub7

I think Sony looks evil already…lol. They made the ISPs give up all the names of ppl who visited his site & dl his vids so they can possibly go after them also. & they chased the guy outta the country. & in there own way all huge corps r evil 😛

  • doub7

Woody makes a good pt, do companies legally have the rite 2 brick ur console? I don’t know all the finer legal pts but that just sounds wrong. Once u buy it u own it imo.

    • tareq salah

i think they shouldn’t , if i pay for something then its mine i can use it how ever i want, once i start distributing and helping others then it becomes a problem. but they can get away with it. because they dont do the damage themselves.
