More new details on Square-Enix’s upcoming Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII emerge, this time pertaining to the battle system.

Since much has been made of Lightning being on her own in the threequel, she now has the ability to guard against enemy attacks. Of course, she can also evade attacks with the press of a button, and reposition herself for a counter-attack.

But perhaps most interesting is that different attacks can be assigned to the four face buttons during battle. That sounds more like a heavier action RPG system a la Namco Bandai’s Tales of series rather than the classic Active Time Battle system we know and love.

Though we’ve already received information the Dress system, one wonders: Where are the Summons? Surely Square-Enix hasn’t forgotten those?

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is currently slated to release this year for PS3 and Xbox 360. It will be the end of the Final Fantasy XIII series as we know it.
