A Christmas miracle?

It’s Christmas week and that means lots of last minute shopping. Whether intentionally or not, plenty of people had the same idea in Japan when they decided to gift their loved one a gaming console. According to the latest hardware charts from Media Create for December 16th to 22nd, sales are up across the board for each platform, with the 3DS XL leading with 164,078 units. That’s 30K more than the week prior.

But much more surprisingly, the Wii U – which sold 74,903 units the week before – managed to sell 109,113 units this week. This may perhaps be the most successful week for the console in…well, it’s been a while and it was enough to cement the console at second place.

Other substantial gains include the 3DS, which sold 68,522 units this week (compared to 50,846 units the week before), and the PlayStation Vita which shot up from 30,440 units the week prior to 50,087 units this week. The sales of Vita TV have remained roughly the same though with 5,504 units sold this week.

Wii U is getting started! Glad to see that many people will see the greatness of this console. It has the potential of being one of the greatest of all time, try it and you’ll love it!

    • Car Audio-Outlet

LOL, no, this is just people desperate for a Christmas present who couldn’t find an Xbox One or a PS4….

    • zerogamer.

      Lol your stupid.

    • InsaneZucchini

You’re an idiot. Media Create’s sales charts are for Japan. Xbox Consoles never sell well in Japan, they’re a non-issue, regardless it hasn’t been released there. PS4 however does not release in Japan until next year either.

    • Mike Osborn

Yeah, they will always do poorly there. Generally because of name Microsoft goes with and game releases. I have Japanese friends who are deterred by it’s name alone as with every other Xbox system(X means Batsu/punishment so its the punishment box one).

    • gogot

They should have ordered them from the US. Plenty of PSOne’s on the shelf where I live.

    • ICHI

Well they could find and Xbox 360 whose sales were up around 200% on the previous week to a massive 800 units, (just short of actually) Japan doesn’t give castlemein XXXX about Microsoft.

    • Tom

Ps4 sucks and the Xbox both over priced for nothing…..kids now love the wii u ,I am guessing your well over 20 lol

    • Mike Osborn

8 core processor, 7970m, and 8gb of ram for 400(The PS4) is not overpriced but the Xbox one is somewhat overpriced considering that as its running lower specs to a very minimal extent. Considering building a PC with similar technology will still cost you 400+, your getting your money’s worth. Its modern PC hardware, you can’t expect cheap cost when that 7970m alone can compete against a 7800 series desktop card. The Wii U’s case, its overpriced but specifically becuase of the gamepad. If it wasn’t for that, the system should be selling in at 200.00 no higher unless they are going to put 250GB – 500GB hard drives with them at base price.

    • Alex Ortiz

its just becuase its the holiday season doode

    • gogot

If you can’t bash it, just make excuses…

    • Mike Osborn

No, that’s a pretty fair call. Remember, X1s and PS4s are hard to find and the Wii U is the only console right now with units to move in stores outside of the 7th generation systems. Its a holiday season still and sells increase on every console when that happens. Nintendo needs to get in gear if they want to survive in the long run since even after a Zelda HD remake, Mario, and Donkey Kong game, the sales didn’t increase much.

    • Relias

Wrong. There is X1’s in stock. PS4’s I would agree. But the fact is the 360, Wii U, PS3, and everything else usually sells faster then the One. Which does not bode well. Truly the Wii U has slowly been inching up since Summertime. Now we are seeing the burst. I mean think about it. People could just as easily wait for PS4 and X1 to be in stock they don’t need to run out and buy a Wii U. But the U finally has some games that make it worthwhile along with a perfect price point. I mean seriously at this point the U is about 50 bucks more then a last gen system in most cases and sometimes the same price. That is the perfect price point. So U is on the rise, despite the Holiday’s and remember according to every major websites hopes they wanted the U to have terrible holiday’s (For some reason) or thought it would because of the launch of the other two systems. Wii U is not supposed to be doing this right now. (According to them) Also, once people realize how wonderful the U really is.. the word will get out and more people will want it. So next year. The Darkhorse will rise.

    • Mike Osborn

Surprised the X1s are back in stock, but not suprised everything else is out selling it lol. Personally, I feel that Nintendo if they get into gear will beat the Xbox one for second place but not sony in the long run. Nintendo’s price point isn’t a value which is the problem. Your forced into buying a separate hard drive at the 250 price point as well as the real cost enforcer being the game pad not the hardware. Nintendo needs to stop pushing the game pad, drop it in place of the pro controller in boxes and sell the system for 150-200 with the gamepad seperate at 150 which would mean sales would skyrocket.

  • Cesar Barroso

hang in there Wii U, the cavalry is coming = Super Smash Bros, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart, Bayonetta, X from Monolithsoft, Fire Emblem X Shim Megami Tensei, Hyrule Warriors… they are coming with blood in their eyes!

    • Carl Fin

      Project Cars, New N Tasty

    • Mike Osborn

Both are multi-platform releases, those will not move units so they aren’t worth even mentioning.

    • Carl Fin

Ok, that just makes no sense. I wouldn’t have bought a Wii U without these 2 games being made available. Yes I enjoy the exclusive games, but seriously, I am hardly going to go out and buy 2 consoles. New N tasty is only on playstation and Wii U. Having those games DOES tip the scale toward a Wii U over a PS4. Not to mention the fact that the gamepad will bring a new dimension to both.

i.e “Well if I buy a Wii U I can still play AC4/ project CARS/ New N Tasty/ watchdogs and it may have unique features. If I buy a ps4 I will have some of those games, but none of the Nintendo exclusives. If the Wii U didn’t have those games, then it’s a PS4 in my cart……ps4 or Wii U? Yeah Wii U.”

You make absolutely no sense to say it makes no difference.

    • Mike Osborn

No, it makes perfect sense. Your forgetting, most people already own 7th gen consoles, why would they go out and buy a Wii U for multi-platforms, specially Odd world games which generally haven’t done well since the PS1 era. Sure you can play those games, but stating their is some unique game play aspect is not true as barely any company has utilized or cared about the Wii U game pad’s capabilities at this point. You think just becuase you like the Wii U,every one wants a Wii U. The sales numbers prove opposite. Doesn’t say the same people will buy the PS4. But, Project Cars for example is on 360,PS3, Wii U, PS4, Xbox one so outside of a small case no one is going to pay for a console just to play one game that they can play on their other consoles. It doesn’t make any difference in the long run for Nintendo’s system sales nor Sony system sales as neither titles is exclusive to their two 8th gens. Now, if Nintendo released a Zelda WII U game that would tip the scale to an extent, but consumers overall aren’t taking kindly to the system and its showing a general worldwide lack of interest even with Mario, Zelda remake, and Donkey kong game on it.

    • Carl Fin

But Mike, at the same time, someone who doesn’t have a current console i.e most of the Nintendo market, are more likely to buy if they can get these games on the Wii U.

It’s difficult to explain but you get my drift…project CARS style drift. :O

    • Mike Osborn

Yeah, I get what you mean. Hence, why I stated that that those who own none of the above were excluded :P. What I’m seeing though with Nintendo is crowd/market wise it seems to have an identity crisis, The game cube wanted the core crowds and survived the market even though it didn’t do to well in the long run(They sold a better product then the rest in that gen, but failed to grab the crowd they would never have). The Wii wanted the casual market and did very well to with even the hardcore crowds because, they often got it as a side console. The Wii U on the other hand, wants the hardcore market like the gamecube did, used gimmicks as the big push(This never grabs the hardcore crowd, and it wasn’t the gimmick that could have grabbed the Wii crowd either), and failed to price itself low enough to take interest or release titles like Red Steel that gave the incentive to buy the system that the Wii had(Zelda would have been a money driver if it had been released to start) if that makes sense.

    • Mike Osborn

I await the downvotes from the disque for stating the problem that Nintendo is having. Come on, disque people with low self-esteem show me how you feel your console’s losses are a part of your own personal failure(as stated by psych analysis on fanboy mentality).

    • Alex Ortiz

just because you bought it for that reason doesnt mean everyone will, the ps4 and xbox one are already catching up to wii u life time sales in 1 month alone, and they already outsold wii u life time sales in the uk, these are numbers and facts, only fan boys want wii u and no bodyelse

    • Carl Fin

Ok Mr. Media lover. My family will have so much less fun because the consoles sales are lower than expected. Only time will tell how the sales will look. I really don’t think the twin consoles are in the same class as the Wii U. It’s like racing a horse and a grey hound but ok.

  • gogot
  • Tom

Love the wii u its selling crazy in my city…..

    • Mike Osborn

I know right, For a whole year, the 10 Wii U units didn’t move in the store next to me. By the Holiday, 4 units moved. Its a hit seller as it stands. That PS4 and Xbox One though… man they suck, they went out of stock immediately on day one. Those competitors, trying to beat the all mighty high sales Wii U, they can’t win!

    • Relias

Uhm yeah you just failed. The U is out of stock at every major retailer here, and the only reason I see the Wii U’s numbers not being higher is stores are worried about over ordering since the yearly sales did not do well. Otherwise you could have easily seen a week where the U sold around a quarter of a million units in US alone. Also the U for the first time ever made it to the top 100 in Video Games in Amazon. (Note there was a week where the U back in November sold 2K and some odd units short of 200K in the Americas alone.)

    • Mike Osborn

Nope, no fail here. There are still units in that BX that I work at. Also, lets remember which system took over a year to hit 2.4 million while PS4 already has hit 2.37 and the Xbox is sitting at 1.84 in less then 2 months. Nintendo needs to get in gear, that is simply that.

    • Guest

I await more downvotes from fanboys, come on bring your hatred and dislike of truth at me! Or do I need to start going after Microsoft(wait no, that would get me upvotes! no one likes microsoft right now). It seems like if you state Nintendo needs to get in gear, you get downvotes but I guess its a badge of honor in the end.

    • Mike Osborn

      ok then….. that escalated quickly.

    • Relias

Nintendo is getting into gear (Finally) I doubt their 2014 is going to the disaster 2013 was. Believe it or not if I have been adding the numbers correctly they have actually done better this month then their launch (Which I read was 460K units sold) They are on pace for half a million sold this month alone. (Which considering the year they have had is almost amazing) I don’t think Nintendo will be the Number two system this gen actually.. but I do believe if they stop delaying games they can be a strong number three and the race between them and Microsoft will be very close. It would be a surprise if they finished number 2, but they would need America and Japan to continue strong sells (Cause Europe is not going to carry them) It’s not so much Nintendo needs to get in gear, it’s so much they need to hit the Nitro Button if they want to finish in number 2.

    • Mike Osborn

Yeah, its a tough race for second for Nintendo. Japan’s case is a easy call, Sony will take over in the long run but may not do well at the launch in feb for them(I have Japanese friends running U.S Ps4s enjoying them, but the lineup is definitely western focused) vs Nintendo. U.S sales and European sales are in Sony’s ballpark for the most part for first, Microsoft has a iffy ground though overall due to the majority perceptive on them with the xbox one which gives Nintendo an opening for second if as you said they “hit the nitro button”. At worst case scenario, I see the Wii U following the gamecube sales pattern, low sales overall but enough to sustain the console for the gen.

    • Relias

Well the thing about Nintendo is, I guess when I say they are in “gear” I mean by that at some point in time(maybe the end of the first quarter or by the second in 2014, but I would say at some point in time in 2014) they can sit there look at Wii U and say we made a profit. (Might be small but I think that is what they are in gear for) I don’t see them “hitting the nitro button “at all as long as that is the case, nor do I believe that they are very much interested in finishing second or third, or the race in general despite some of their talk this year. I think a lot of that talk was just for show overall. However, I do believe that they will have more of a impact in 2014 then a lot of people are predicting, and when you mention Gamecube.. hmmm, you know the thing is, I think the Wii U is going to do better than the Cube overall, not much, but usually when people say the Gamecube they mean only about 20 million in sells. Although I do agree I don’t think Wii U will do rocket busters, but enough as you said to sustain them. (Nintendo) Out of curiosity, If Nintendo does make another console, do you think they will launch theirs first again? I can see it happening after all the U has been around a year longer then the other’s and if Nintendo is only thinking about a 5 year generation, it’s a possibility.

    • Mike Osborn

I think, if Nintendo doesn’t see strong profit in the Wii U and decide to continue, I would also feel they will try to rush to first again(Iwata isn’t the brightest as a company president), but it could even be a mid-gen release. If anything, Nintendo should really start looking going the route of Sega but hold on to their handheld devices. Sega actually made much more profit after going to multi-platform releases instead of trying to hold onto their own consoles like back in the day. At the end of the day though, Iwata isn’t going to likely care about the actual profitability and stick to simply how he feels about his systems(Great at making games, terrible as Nintendo president).

    • Relias

Wow you ask for down votes not once but twice?? LOL It’s only a badge of Honor if you take them without asking. 😛

    • Isaac Sanchez

yes you do fail… Mario 3d world is sold out in every toysrus store in southern california….

    • Mike Osborn

Did I say games? No, I said system units. And Toy’srus doesn’t carry many copies of games so obviously you failed 😛

  • Mike Osborn

I love how you get down votes if you state something that is true, but you get up votes if you rub yourself and call out Nintendo as supreme overlord or your god, which ever you prefer while bashing the competitors. Guess, there will never be such thing as a conversation on the ups and downs on consoles vs their competitors without biased at play from imbeciles.

  • bigshynepo

Doesn’t this fall right in line with holiday shopping?
Even the Wii and PSP saw the same percentage boost to their sales.
The only system that didn’t sell an increased percentage inline with the other systems was the PS3 but they have the PS4 releasing in less than 2 months now so that’s expected.

I think it’d be newsworthy if WiiU bucked the trend and saw a 200% sales boost over other consoles during the holidays but I see nothing newsworthy here.
