With one of Microsoft’s stated reasons for having created the Scorpio being their desire to push 4K gaming, no one should really have doubted the company’s commitment to 4K- however, during an interview on the TXR Podcast, Head of Xbox Games Marketing Aaron Greenberg reiterated the company’s desire to be at the crest of the 4K wave with their upcoming console.

Greenberg stated in the interview that Microsoft is “really serious about 4K gaming… it is a huge opportunity.” While conceding that pushing 4K graphics will require a lot of hardware power, he also emphasized that the Scorpio is a “beast.”

Greenberg also shared his own thoughts on the Pokemon GO phenomenon, stating that it’s awesome to see a game that has caught so many people’s attention. “The stories about it are insane,” he enthused, noting that the Pokemon franchise and its fanbase can never be underestimated, and that what the game has accomplished, creating a social experience that everyone can get into, is commendable. He expressed hopes that the newfound interest in AR because of Pokemon GO can be capitalized on, and lead to further development of the format- something which Microsoft themselves are exploring with the HoloLens.

The Xbox One Scorpio is due out by Holiday 2017.

They also seem to be really serious about not having any new games to announce for the Scorpio. A 6 year old game like Red Dead Redemption will look to be bundled in with the new hardware. More PR bullsh**.

It’ll probably just scrape through at 4K 30 fps mid/high PC settings.

Because they will have to contend with a few things:

Price – luckily there has just been a nice leap in GPU price/cost ratio with the 480 and 1060. They ain’t exactly powerhouse 4K cards though. Also they will need a bit better than a mobile phone CPU this time. This all add$ up.

Heat – they usually have to down clock GPUs in consoles (especially if they use cheap cooling solution) so while we may be thinking we’ll get a 1500 MHz GPU – it’ll likely be down clocked. A lot.

OR maybe MS will ignore all that and release a beast – at a beast price. Which (unless they make a substantial loss) just makes me rather play on PC (same games + much more). But I guess that is the weird situation of the “Windows 10 family” of MS/Xbox we are right at the beginning of at the moment.

    • kma99

Ms already said it will be a premium product so expect it to carry a premium price tag. For the price im expecting it to hold it better deliver. I dont care to much for the 4k i would rather have more detailed graphics and 60 frames. I cant see resolution but i can feel the frames and 30 is sluggish.

    • Mark

Well 4k will make all the objects razor sharp tbh…

    • kma99

Yeah i know that, trust me i do but i would want 1440 with 60 frames and plenty of detail. 4k is fine but i started gaming with atari 2600 so resolution didnt factor in my gaming experience.

    • Mark

I’m in the same boat, 60 frames and crazy graphics effects! The sharpness doesn’t have to be all that nuts….man this thing is soo far away!

    • red2k

Agree! He is another candidate for explode the polygraph…Actually Michael Patcher is a more reliable source.

  • Andy Maas

I’m getting the Scorpio when it comes out

    • Mark

      Wno ain’t? Lol

    • how ya doin?

Me, cause the scorpio is useless if there is no exclusives and since you can get this stuff on pc. I own a ps4 btw, I’m not a pc fanboy.

    • Mark

Are u on PC? If just on the PS4, then Scorpio will run all multiplats substantially better than NEO, so…..

    • how ya doin?

No I’m actually on my phone. And so… who cares?

    • Mark

No I meant do u only game on PS4? And u honestly don’t care if one system runs at a higher frame rate and with better graphics on all multiplats?! Well to each his own. But I know for me that’d be a huge factor, especially for console only gamers like meeself mate.

    • how ya doin?

I don’t care about graphics and fps. Look at uncharted 4, witcher 3, mgs V, Killzone Shadowfall, the order, etc. You shouldn’t worrying about graphics and fps as it’s good enough. That’s the problem with the gaming community, instead of caring about gameplay, you care for the graphics and fps. Graphics should be the absolute least of your damn worries, my god.

    • Mark

Listen man if u don’t care about graphics that’s fine, I can dig u enjoy good gameplay first. However, gaming has ALWAYS been largely about pushing the envelope of realism. And u do know that frame rate significantly affects gameplay, right? Higher specs is for better resolution and more polygons is what makes people go out and buy new consoles….otherwise what’s the point of upgrading? I should upgrade for gameplay? Every game u mentioned has brought nothing new to gameplay design in any major way. Can u tell me anything new and major in those games? Cuz I haven’t seen it. They were already great yrs ago. All of those games could’ve been done on last gen systems, with a huge graphics cutback of course. What makes them refreshing sequels, in large part, is how real they look…..but we should ignore graphics? Hunh? It’s funny cuz u make it sound like because graphics will get better on the new systems, gameplay will suffer……is that what ur saying? Cuz I say why not have it all?!

    • Riggybro

Sorry to hijack your conversation but being a Nintendo fan I can tell you that sales wise that over this gen and last 3DS and Wii have sold substantially better than the “powerhouse” consoles or PC. So there obviously is a very strong argument that gameplay does matter above realistic graphics. Also many of most critically acclaimed games have been story/gameplay based and not super-soldier AAA graphics save the world things.

I am also like you (will be upgrading to a new GPU soon) so I admit I do love the eye candy but… yeah… I am not in the majority and am thankful in a way otherwise all games would be stale big budget Ubi/EA things.

    • Mark

Well the reason Wii and 3DS sold so well is cuz; 1) Both were cheaper than both generations of both consoles and 2) the Wii and 3DS reached into a very casual market of “gamers”, we’re talking old people in retirement homes waving around those sticks lol. I think ur referring to gaming in general, the smaller games that everyone in the world plays ahaha. I’m talkin about traditional console gaming. Big budget triple A games. What drives those sales? Easy, graphics gets peoples’ attention, and gameplay/story keeps them playing it. Almost all GOTY games have a strong combo of each aspect; TLOU, Witcher 3, can’t remember 2015. My question to the other guy was, why would u not want graphics to accel? Would this be hurting gameplay design in ur eyes? And if so, prove ur feelings? I never said gameplay wasn’t big…but the popular narrative nowadays against the Scorpio is, “We don’t need better graphics”. Lmao, what? How convenient.

    • sgt_hammertime

the wii sold because it had a novel idea of it’s time plus it was the cheapest.

    • Orion Wolf

Exactly, main reason why there are new console generations is for the visuals and fps (to a degree), if fps and visuals weren’t important we would still be on the Atari 2600. And the “its
good enough” argument has been used with the ps3 as well, and yet here we are praising the gfx of the new games.

By their “logic” (or the lack thereof), we would still be on the Atari 2600.

Moreover, “graphics and fps are not what’s important” … but that’s only true now, you know with Scorpio being more powerful than the Neo. I’m quite positive most of these people wouldn’t be here saying this stuff if the Neo was stronger.

    • Mark

Man I’m starting to feel the same way. Why wouldn’t any hardcore gamer be excited for an awesome newer version of their favorite system, that packs 2-5 times the graphics power? That makes little sense to me personally. So now I’m feeling like people are tryna damage control the Scorpio. Why? I don’t know. But if ur gonna criticize Scorpio, do the same with the NEO. Then I’ll take ur argument as genuine….ultimately I think there’s more excitement for this than hate, and that’s the train I’m riding till this thing drops!

    • Orion Wolf

I’m glad MS didn’t skimp with the specs on the Scorpio as this will give devs more freedom to make larger, better looking games witch (at least to me) translate to more immersive games. Can’t wait to see games that utilize the HW of the Scorpio, but I hope devs don’t push for a 4k native and instead opt for the temporal reconstruction with 1080p 60fps and utilize the power for better AI, physics, visuals etc. – QB 2 (hopefully)

Side note – Can’t wait for the first games to have real time ray/path tracing as, imho, it’s at that time a VR headset (2nd/3rd gen) will truly be a thing to own and that’s what better HW means, but clearly some “can’t” see that far ahead.

    • Mark

Well I think Phil mentioned Ray Tracing a few yrs back. In an interview he stated that they looked into advanced lighting techniques, and HDR lighting was the solution found. So maybe next gen we’ll see that as the hardware should be capable. But I’m excited to see HDR in action for now

    • Orion Wolf

I do remember that and it will be interesting to see what MS comes up with to include it in games – that is HW and software
      wise.

I’ve been hearing a lot of positive stuff about HDR, but I’m taking a wait and see approach here – well at least until the gears bundle arrives =)

Btw not directly related but still interesting to hear from an industry vet – http://wccftech.com/sweeney-need-40-tflops-render-photo-realistic-dynamic-environments-humans-require-computing-power/

    • Mark

Wow man Tim brought me back to reality with that one, ahaha. So I guess the question I have now is, should developers focus more on animations and human expression than say, I don’t know, graphics? Would we be more impressed with amazing animations, but that only has subpar graphics due to the GPU and CPU reserving its resources to physics and animation? I think it’s a good question. And how close will the Xbox 4 & PS4 come to realism?

    • Orion Wolf

What he stated is from his experience as a dev and he is right, but what (in my humble opinion) he doesn’t account for is
the absurd pace the tech is evolving (software and HW wise) and the ingenuity of some devs i.e. back compat, which according to MS themselves wasn’t feasible at one point… so the 40 TFlops might be achievable with a dedicated chip +
software in less time than we could imagine. There are some really smart people in the industry that will probably create an algorithm that was deemed unfeasible not so long ago.

The question is how will the Scorpio be designed, that is if the 4k is the only thing their aiming for with it and how much is
MS willing to spend on the R&D.

If they go and put some proprietary tech inside (perhaps a colab with AMD on that) we might see some amazing results.

In regards to what will devs be aiming for, depends on the dev, but I’m hopping for a balance between gfx, physics, AI,
resolution/fps etc. as making a game super realistic, but having horrible animations/physics deters from the realism that the gfx provide and that’s all besides the main argument of the scorpio AKA native 4k … for now at least.

    • Mark

It’s funny cuz every game he cited as having great gameplay & story, also had multiple articles written about their graphics display…..hmmm

    • Orion Wolf

The Irony when he used the Order 1886 as an argument of gameplay over visuals when the game is the definition of visuals over … well everything else.

    • Mark

      Ahaha so true

    • Riggybro

Exactly. That is one of the reasons PS4 wiped the floor clean with X1. Why buy a weaker system for almost the same price?

    • Mark

Well to be fair there’s a number or reasons for choosing a system; exclusives, controller, UI and dashboard features etc. But nonetheless a substantially higher frame rate & graphics output on one system is big..

    • Demetrius Radford

Almost? The Xbox One is 70 dollars cheaper than the ps4 lol

    • sgt_hammertime

didn’t Microsoft change that stance about not having exclusive for their consoles?

  • Brian

    looking forward to the SCORPIO!!

  • Mr Xrat

Oh dear, another conflict with previous statements by a Microsoft executive. Quick, Phil, time to clear it up again even though you don’t actually know what’s going on!

    • Bad wolf

      DAMAGE CONTROL….

    • Mr Xrat

      Yeah, from the Xgimps. 🙂
