Microsoft On Recent Xbox One Success: ‘Momentum Is Really Important In This Business’

“We’ll look back on 2016 as our tipping point”

Xbox One S

While the Xbox One was once considered to be losing the console wars almost before they started, it appears Microsoft has reversed those struggles. The company had been making headway before this year, though it was slow going.

Since 2016 kicked off, Microsoft has been making up ground on Sony much quicker thanks in large part to initiatives like its backwards compatibility program. This summer, the Xbox One sold more units than Sony sold PS4s for the first time since the two consoles launched in the US.

Then Microsoft did it again. Since the launch of the Xbox One S, Microsoft has touted the Xbox One S as the best selling console in the UK. The comeback the console has made is one that Microsoft is clearly quite happy about. Company representatives appear 2016 is the tipping point and they are on more solid footing when it comes to the competition with Sony’s PS4.

“Since launch, Xbox One S is Britain’s best-selling console in 2016,” Xbox UK marketing director Harvey Eagle stated in an interview with GamesIndustry.

“I put that down to a combination of things. Firstly, it is a great product with a great design, and the 4K proposition is resonating very strongly. I think we have a great selection of console bundles for those buying for the first time – particularly with FIFA, Minecraft and Battlefield as the core three options.

“I think we have a great exclusive line-up again this year. Forza Horizon 3 is a great game and really highly rated on Metacritic, and Gears of War 4 is another great example of an exclusive game.

“And with all of that at a price point that has opened us up to being more attractive to more families than ever before.”

“Momentum is really important in this business, because it gives confidence to retailers, publishers and to consumers. We are giving them confidence that they have made a right point. I think we’ll look back on 2016 as a tipping point for Xbox One. And as I look forward to 2017, we have some really great things to look forward to that will help us sustain and build on this momentum, including games like Halo Wars 2 and Sea of Thieves, and of course a new Xbox One console in Project Scorpio.”

MS will have the advantage in hardware when Scorpio drops and they already have the advantage in features and services but we need more titles that are gonna blow us away. I mean over the first 3 years there’s been some great games on xbox one. Some great new ips and returning franchises and I’m looking forward to Crackdown, Scalebound, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and Forza Motorsport 7 (hopefully 4k60fps on Scorpio) in 2017, but I look over at what Sony has coming with Horizon ZD in 2017 and that game looks like it’s on a different level. Who knows how long before games like God of War, Dayz Gone and Spider-Man will get released, because they’re all still pretty in early development, but those games look on another level as well. MS also needs to bring over some of the bigger Japanese titles like Nioh and Yakuza to fill the void of Japanese games. I can understand not bringing games like Disgaea, or J-Stars Victory etc. because those are very niche and don’t sell well outside of Japan on any console. But I’m happy with how far xbox has come since launch and glad to see xbox one s doing well in sales. It’s a great product.

Blah blah blah,…blow smoke…”Cuphead, Sea of Thieves, Scalebound”, blah, blah blah blah…blow smoke…blah blah blah blah…

The Xbox brand and its exclusives are a huge joke compared to what the PlayStation brand quality is bringing. There, I just said exactly what you failed to say behind your hyperbole, and I was just more honest and straight to the point. You ain’t foolin nobody with this nonsense.

    • Reclaimer13

I just said the games that sony has coming are on another level you creep. You should crawl back under that rock.

    • crazy_black_man-

LOL. Thats all you should have said. That “Xbox is doing great and I’m happy with it” pitch was absolutely pathetic.

    • Reclaimer13

You don’t get to tell me how much I can say you gint. The xbox one s is a great product and the recent sales reflect that.

Let the crazy black man say whatever he needs to say, how else will he sleep at night. He needs to validate himself someway you know.

    • Reclaimer13

Saying something positive about xbox is not allowed on the internet I guess. He was cool with the praise I had for playstation though.

    • crazy_black_man-

Was it really saying something positive or outright lying?

    • Code Geass Season3!!

Doesn’t surprise he was cool when you praise playstation, his done the same for me, it paints a clear picture about him and it’s not a good one

    • Reclaimer13

That was my honest opinion. I think the xbox one s might be the better overall console with all the features and services it offers over the ps4, but I think the ps4 has a more impressive lineup of games coming in the future.

    • crazy_black_man-

What features? “Crash to the dashboard”, “disc read error”, and “hard reset” are features and services? LOL. Hilariousness!

    • crazy_black_man-

I sleep goooooood. How are you sleeping?

    • Code Geass Season3!!

I hope you sleep good after your daily dose of cra…sorry I mean daily dose of Spreading Lying Bullsh*t Fanboy Comments. I on the other hand sleep well without the need of such dose since I don’t need to validate or tell people I made the right purchase.

    • crazy_black_man-

The recent sales reflects casual consumer ignorance, but they gonna learn soon enough about the quality of today’s inferior consumer electronics that are packaged in those dull ugly green boxes. Better purchase the extended warranty. And if you buy an extra controller, better get a warranty for that piece of crap too. Oh what fun times to be a reader on Xbox One reddit. Let the crying begin new Xbox One owners.

just a few pointers about this article.

    1. How can the Xbox One/S be ‘gaining ground’ when the PS4 has outsold the Xbox One/S globally every single month this year ? To ‘gain ground’ the Xbox One/S would have to outsell the PS4 on a global basis , not just the the U.S and a few months in the U.K (latest sales figures have put the pS4/Pro ahead the Xbox for the month of November in the U.K)

    2. I love the P.R spin “Since launch the Xbox One S is Britains best-selling console in 2016” total P.R bullsh*t . The console is only two months old ! Tell us Microsoft which console has been the biggest selling this YEAR in the U.K and the U.S ? Your very quiet about that aren’t you ? Is it because the PS4 is still the largest selling console ?

Just remember Gamingbolt , the console business is a global market not just the U.S and U.K , just because the Xbox One is doing better than it has been in the U.S doesn’t mean that translate to the rest of the world.

I know I must be sounding very anti-Microsoft but I really can’t stand it when I read P.R bull be it from Microsoft or Sony , but the facts remain globally the PS4 has outsold the Xbox One every week since they both launched.

And yes , I do own an Xbox One.

They specifically said gaining ground in the US, and it’s been the best selling console in the UK and AUS for the last 2 months so yeah technically gaining ground there too. Not that it’s made a dent in the sales deficit yet but the US and UK are pretty much the only markets the xbox 360 won last gen, while Sony dominated the rest of the world, and in the end only 1M consoles separated them. So if the current trend continues over the next few years there’s no reason to believe that the sales gap couldn’t narrow significantly, especially seeing how most gamers haven’t even bought a current gen console yet. 170M 360s and ps3s sold in total and we’re only at around 75M so far between the ps4 and xbox one. And the xbox one S has been out for 5 months now not 2.

    • Mr Plinkus

First of all the Xbox One S was released in the U.K in late September , making it little over two months not five !!
Secondly although the Xbox One has been outselling the PS4 in the U.S it is still NOT gaining ground in global sales. The Xbox needs to outsell the PS4 in every territory for it gain ground.
Microsoft needs a sales miracle to ‘win’ this console battle , who knows maybe the Scorpio will do just that , but remember the PS4 Pro will have been on sale for a whole year before the Scorpio (and I have a feeling it’s going to have a premium price point)
I’m also going to bet Sony will announce a late 2018 release of the PS5 just before the Scorpio is released to try and take the Scorpio hype away !

“This PR bull has been brought to you by the Xbox PR team at GamingBolt, where if the Xbox One is hot garbage, you definitely won’t hear it from us!” And now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

  • Mr Xrat

Oh look, another Xbox marketing goon who says a burst of sales activity at the end of the year constitutes some kind of comeback. Never mind the fact that it’s not selling as much as it did earlier this year. Never mind that in the UK where this guy is from, Xbone at Black Friday this year was down from last year. Never mind the fact they’ve tried this momentum narrative multiple times at the end of the last two years and it never comes to fruition. Here’s more damage control and spin so the worst fanbase of anything in history can feel better about itself.

    • crazy_black_man-

It’s almost on a subliminal level. They have no shame lying to the holiday shopping public. An Xbox One under a Christmas tree is a bad Christmas. Who would do that to someone they loved? Cruel.

    • Learned Handgun

This is a new level of pathetic even for you.

    • Mark

Ahaha. Some people are fully absorbed by this “war”.

    • crazy_black_man-

      Huh? Who’s this?

With just a comment history of 58 comments, shut the f up and go sit down. You haven’t even earned the right to be called pathetic yet. You can’t even sit next to me on a crowded bus.
