Nothing's more terrifying than waking up to a Pikachu looking down at you.

I mean, there has always been something a bit creepy and unsettling about Pokemon. Remember the Lavender Town urban legends? Or the flavor text on some of the ghost Pokemon, which hints at a more sinister back story for some of the cuddly critters we enslave, confine in tiny spaces, and force to engage in fatal cockfights than the cutesy exterior would suggest?

But now The Pokemon Company seems to be fully embracing the horror inherent within the very concept of Pokemon, as they just announced a collaboration with famed Japanese manga maker Junji Ito, who is known for his horrifying creations, to create a horror Pokemon manga. We didn’t get more information on this upcoming venture, outside of that one image that you can see above, but it still seems to hint at a Grudge-style Pokemon story. Which has terrifying implications.

I’m sure the little kids who flock to Pokemon for its warm and fuzzy exterior will love this.
