PS4 And Xbox One Reviews: 7/10 And 8/10 Respectively

Xbox One Vs. PS4: ROUND ONE

Posted By | On 09th, Nov. 2013 Under News

xbox-one_ps4

Despite the fact that both next gen consoles have yet to be released, popular magazine GQ has released reviews for both systems in their latest issue. Both consoles are reviewed in their “The Lab” section of the publication, and received a rating based out of ten possible stars.

So, how did things pan out? Well, it seems that according to GQ the Xbox One is overall the better console, beating the PS4 with a rating of 8/10 stars to the PS4’s 7/10. According to GQ, the cloud capabilities of the Xbox One make it a ‘complete media device’, and the PS4’s smaller release game list is working against it.

Both reviews were pretty short, however, and GQ itself has very little repute as a relevant gaming publication. So overall, while the Xbox One may have won this round, I wouldn’t write the PS4 off based solely on this information. Let’s wait til release date, where we can get the opinions of both the critics and the fans.

Which console are you picking up on launch day? Let us know in the comments section below.

PS4 easily. $100 cheaper than the Xbone and it’s 50% more powerful. It also has better cloud services, they just don’t boast it as some great feature because it’s really just servers.
There are still a lot of games to be announced as well, I think the PS4 will come out ahead in exclusives too.

    • Ville N

      >50% more powerful
      Haha, no.

      For example:
      http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/10/24/ps4-and-xbox-one-specs-almost-identical-says-resident-evil-dev

Also xbone specs got boosted after the first announcement.

And PS3 was clearly more powerful than 360 but many games had better graphics on 360.

    • roase

The CPUs are mostly the same but the PS4’s GPU has about 40% more stream processors and shader units (18vs12 and 1152vs768. The PS4 also has much faster memory.
The only boost the Xbox One got was a slight CPU overclock which doesn’t mean much honestly.

There is a reason why so many games are running at 720p on the Xbox One while they are mostly 1080p on the PS4. Because it really is that much weaker.

    • Ville N

I would wait until the second wave of games for the next gen and see about it then. I don’t really care, I just built a new PC but consoles have a huge impact on the games.

    • Abba Okoro

So the ESRAM in the Xbox one doesn’t exist? LOL

    • francisco garay

It exists but only as a bottle neck.

    • chris

thats why not one game looks as good aryse, keep dreaming kiddos, sdf in full force yet nothing to plkay at launch, the reviews are coming in a week and reality will set in, so keep saying the ps4 is more powerful yet nothing proves it

    • roase

The specs prove it. Feel free to like them up and stop being a fanboy. If PS4 was $100 more than the Xbox One and half the power I would get the Xbox One in a heartbeat, but that is not the case.

    • You are flat out wrong

Ryse plays like shit. 6/10s at launch. Try again.

    • xxtray90xx

did u actually do research or did you just copy and paste what you read?

and honestly if you ask any pc gamer they will take framerate or resolution anyday.

    • M$ $ony

The CPU’s inside the Xbox One and PS4 are not the same AT ALL! The Xbox One CPU is a lot more powerful than the CPU inside the PS4. The CPU inside the Xbox One is also 50% wider and has access to highspeed eSRAM. The PS4 has is 14:4 with 14 for graphics and 4 for compute only! The Xbox One also has 2 rendering pipe lines that make the system more balanced and efficient. In addition, the only reason why you are seeing some games with lower resolution is because of the late tools from Microsoft to better utilize the eSRAM and the display planes.

    • luvthesnapper

      wtf are you talking about

    • M$ $ony

      Which part(s)?

    • KH

Actually the reason the PS4 is running higher resolutions is because the ESRAM architecture that Xbox One has is harder to program for by launch, as opposed to Sony’s massive 8mb DDR5 cache. In actuality, the DDR5 and ESRAM come out fairly close when utilized by programmers correctly, with a believe a slight advantage to Xbox. The GPU on PS4 is undeniably better. Check out anandtech.com. They have good no BS reviews on the hardware. Bottom line, graphics will be close, with negligible differences once hardware is understood (remember early PS3 ports were pretty bad). The rest will be based on services. Both will be good. I will get an xbox, because that is the ecosystem and the games and controller I am used to. But I am sure Sony will be a great experience too.

    • CrimsonSkies

      Haha yes..
They are talking about capabilities more than performance. If your really a PC gamer, then you should know the difference between a mainstream $150 level GPU (Gimped AMD 7790 in the Xbox One) and a $300 level GPU (an AMD GPU near specs of a AMD 7870) IF you are suggesting there isn’t much difference, then you need to sell your video card and buy a card that costs half as much, because obviously you wouldn’t see much a difference, right?

    • Ville N

”AMD GPU near specs of a AMD 7870” etc

So nobody really knows what’s powering them not to speak of testing and making games running on the next gen. Yes the new cod runs at lower resolution on the xbox but I would wait and see how things are after a while. If then there is a distinguishable difference in graphics in games between the consoles there’s no arguing about it.

    • roase

We know exactly what is powering them, PC hardware, and of course there is going to be a difference. The PS4’s GPU is about twice as powerful. As the generation progresses and games get more complex the gap between the two systems will widen.
I wouldn’t have a problem with the Xbox One if it was $299. But the price they are asking for the system is outrageous.

    • francisco garay

exactly if the XBOXone had a competitive price, no prob. $100 bucks for something less powerful is… $100 bucks for something less powerful.

    • Abba Okoro

When drivers and optimization doesn’t matter? LOL

    • willhe

haha yes if you were a pc gamer you wouldnt be giving a damn about console specs

    • CrimsonSkies

haha yes, because I am a PC gamer with about 200 games on Steam/Origin/uplay, but I love consoles too.

    • Matt Berial

      Mark Rubin says hi.

    • francisco garay

Did they? I had 2 XBOX360s burnout on me. I never replaced the second one.

    • wrong

Is that why so MTBs guy fans on Xbox one is 720p?

    • Paul Crowley

The person who gets both wins on exclusives.

    • chris

your dilusional with that 50% power crap, ryse crushes anything that the ps4 has at launch and clone zone and wack are not something to brag about for a launch system that is supposedly so powerful and the master gaming machine, the ps4 is ajoke

    • duli14

Full on damage control! just accept the fact that ps4 is more powerful, it will be better for you. Just stick to posting on mistexmedia lol

    • nick

ps4 is 1080p powerful the real joke is the xbox 720.

    • You are flat out wrong

Only joke here is your English language skills!

    • luvthesnapper

      lol @ ryse in general

    • CrimsonSkies

No, your comment is a joke. The fact is that the PS4 is more powerful for $100 less. I love Xbox, but I don’t care about Kinect and prefer the most powerful. Don’t confuse good looking with most powerful, as Ryse is made by a company that makes engines, they know how to makes the best out of the hardware. Look at the other games though, 720p most of them. If Ps4 is a joke, then what makes the lesser powered Xbox?

    • Samuel Herrera

Cloud streaming does not equal cloud processing LOL

    • Cappernougght

Can we stop pulling this “50% more power” out of our asses please? The gpu is slightly more powerful, the xbox one has high memory bandwidth though.

  • ThatOneGuy

Xbox One by far will be better console. this will be my first xbox as i have always been playstation. But from what i have read and seen, I am definitely making the switch.

    • Paul Crowley

I preferred the 360 as a whole to the PS3, but this generation would have been very much diminished by not having played some of the great games on the PS3. Or, indeed, the Wii which had some titles I loved too.

I’m looking forward to getting all 3 again, but right now, I don’t see any really compelling reason to own either the PS4 or the One. It’ll be some time down the road, but I’m sure they’ll justify the purchases. First game that comes out for one of them that justifies the price of the console, I’m in.

    • Maestro

The pS4 still “win” because of

    • dem0n0cracy

March 11th, Titanfall. I just did all the hard thinking for you.

    • Paul Crowley

My gaming time preference leans towards single player games. Sure, I’ve played a fair bit of Call of Duty, Halo and Gears multiplayer in my time, but I’m not too enthused by a game that I can’t just chill out playing on my own. I could pick it up for some good multiplayer, but I’ll want to have some other game for my downtime from multiplayer to have a console when that comes out. D4 looks good, but it’s putting a lot of weight on its shoulders to ask is it likely to be good enough to buy a system for. An Elder Scrolls/big RPG or JRPG would do the trick.

    • dem0n0cracy

Fair enough. How about Project Spark. You could create your own RPG from scratch!

    • Paul Crowley

To tell the truth, I haven’t followed up on it at all. I’ll do that, though.

    • DNA

      I smell bullshit.

    • Whaaa

      Close your mouth

    • SHEEKEN6969

Its probably the Bullshit the Sony fanboys have been spewing for a long time now.

    • You are flat out wrong

“this will be my first xbox as i have always been playstation. But from
what i have read and seen, I am definitely making the switch.”

      Said no one ever.

      Please leave, marketer.

    • Cappernougght

      Imbecile.

    • Fweds

You will see “You are flat out wrong” posting negative comments on most Xbox One articles he is a well known troll.

    • Jon Smith

How the fuck is the xbone better? You do realise gamingbolt is ridicilously Xbox oriented…

  • mike

Gosh I could not be more torn. I’ve had an x1 preorder for 4 months now but as launch nears I feel more and more like I’m making the wrong choice. I agree, I think X1 has better/ more diverse and cool features, but I’m starting to think I won’t use any of them. I love gaming with friends, but its more split screen than anything else, so I really dgaf about all the sharing features and shit, and I know its weird but I actually have my hd tv legit right next to an old crt tv, so the Xbox one tv features that once amazed me now I really also dgaf about BC if there’s anything on tv I wanna watch I will just have it on the other tv, rather than snap it onto the first one. I don’t have to have games in full HD but either considering literally every laucn game that interest me is a multiplat, its kinda hard to buy a $60 game when you know you can get the same game same price with better visuals. What do u think I should do? I need help! Please give me some answers guys, should I stick with the bone or go to the dark side

    • jayflow

Well if you love gaming with friends you should go for the system that most of your friends will be playing.

    • Paul Crowley

If you want my advice, I have a couple of things that come to mind. I’d say that both will be worth owning due to the exclusives that’ll come out. If you can make that work (and you have years of time to make it so) then do it. If you can*, it might still be worth waiting to see which you should get first. But if you feel you can’t* then waiting is especially important. Don’t buy at launch. The longer you wait, the better your decision will be. And the games will be cheaper meaning you’ll get more time for cheaper. I’m getting all 3 consoles, but have to figure out when that’ll make sense in terms of my having money to buy, time to play, and the games available to buy that I’ll want. I’ll not be buying all 3 within the 1 year, that’s a safe bet anyway. And my first may be during thee summer.

      * Can/can’t buy both consoles just to clarify.

    • chris

well with the ps4 youll be bored to death with just clonezone. then youll be paying the waiting game like last gen. x1 all the way

    • You are flat out wrong

You mean like when 360 games dried up after the third year?

Enjoy all your Kinect crap in 2016, loser. ^_^

    • Cappernougght

      Enjoy your Knack? lol

    • You are flat out wrong

I will. Looking forward to watching Ryse?

    • Cappernougght

I was being an ass. Knack actually looks good. Impressed with the number of objects that make up the character and want to see how it actually handles. Note sure about it being the next Crash Bandicoot though. And yes I would look forward to playing Ryse if I get the Xbox.

    • M$ $ony

I wouldn’t even bother… This guy thinks it’s common sense for third part publishers to spend a shit ton of money to make and sustain dedicated servers than to use Microsoft’s free dedicated servers that have have cloud computation power.

    • grivad

As far as hardware, both consoles are comparable. Don’t choose based on the hardware. Choose based on the games you want to play (exclusives), and if you play online, take into consideration which console most of your friends have/will have.

  • Ryan

We also have to remember this is GQ. None of their comments would make me want either one honestly. Their technology folks aren’t really the greatest when it comes to which pieces of tech to get.

Both consoles will do great things. To rate them now before release is just foolish.

  • Trevor Clarke

Whichever console you want you can get it at target.com and receive a free $10 gift card:

I played with the Xbox One at the MS store in Portland, OR yesterday. It was great fun, My doubts are gone, the pre-order stands and I’m happy again. Now it doesn’t matter what I read or what anyone else says. I went, I played, I know.

    • Josiah Grey

Where did you go to try it out? I live in Portland OR too.

    • e1988

      the MS store

    • Josiah Grey

I meant as in address, which never mind I just looked it up myself

    • e1988

how many MS stores are in Portland, OR? I would have only figured one? I could be wrong

    • Josiah Grey

There’s 2 or at least 2 nearby portland. There’s one about less than an hour away from me. I’m gonna go there later this week to finally try out the XO

    • Abba Okoro

Good ounce you experience the xbox won you’ll cancel you Ps4 pre-order like the many renounced ex-PS4 fans

    • Josiah Grey

I have none of them pre ordered xD I’m broke as fuck lmfao

    • Abba Okoro

So Sony drones are broke fucks….LOL

    • Josiah Grey

I wouldn’t know because I’m not a Sony Drone. But I am a man who has some financial issues he’s trying to fix.

    • Abba Okoro

      LOL ok man

    • Mike Greenway

Hey Josiah, I went to the new MS store downtown by pioneer place.

    • Josiah Grey

Dude I have lived in Portland Oregon all my life and I had no idea there was a Microsoft Store over there lmfao and I’ve been to downtown Portland sooooo many times xD I’m embarrassed to call myself an Oregonian man

    • Mike Greenway

It has only been there one month, so no wonder you hadn’t run across it yet. I enjoyed myself, good people in the store.

    • Josiah Grey

Oh it’s brand new? Damn. Well I’ll definitely be going there today or tomorrow

  • jznlv

I.will get ps4 for now, because I know I will they will have most of the games I want. If xbox comes out with exclusives besides halo GoW type games in a couple of yrs and drop Kinect , ill getone at that point. Microsoft didn’t have a diverse enough library for me last gen, but I bought 360 first , obviously because it was put a year earlier.Ps4 is a no brained for me, I love some good jrpgs, naughty dog, games like puppeteer and ico etc, and it will have muptlat.

  • You are flat out wrong

Hahahaha, GQ. Dying print magazines will greatly appreciate the cheques coming in from Microsoft to bump the scores up a bit!

  • Samuel Herrera

Can’t wait to play with dedicated servers in all my games!

    • You are flat out wrong

The dedicated servers that already exist on most games?

    • M$ $ony

Name them then. Name them all. Name all the games on Xbox 360 that have dedicated servers. There are a few, but no many, Zaire…

    • You are flat out wrong

Battlefield 3 and 4. All platforms.

Fact is, only first parties are going to use those free servers you worship so much. It’s kind of sad, all that effort for nothing.

    • M$ $ony

      First read this http://www.gamesradar.com/microsoft-offers-free-dedicated-servers-all-xbox-one-titles/

Second, if I remember correctly I pay to host my own server on battlefield…

Also, please tell me why no one would use free dedicated servers? No one in their right mind would not use them! You know that and I know that.

    • You are flat out wrong

Keyword, “offers.” Publishers prefer to use their own servers as it gives them greater control of the service they wish to provide. Try again.

    • M$ $ony

Link to prove this? I am calling complete and total BS.

What your telling me is that all publishers prefer building, managing, and running servers at scale which costs a huge amount of money instead of using Microsoft’s dedicated servers with cloud computing power for free with not having to do all the work?

You are trying very, very hard to damage anything that has to do with Microsoft and my question for you is WHY?

    • You are flat out wrong

Because it’s basic common sense? Because companies want complete control over the product and services they are selling?

The only time a third party publisher will use your beloved dedicated servers is when they want to pull a game offline to reallocate resources and they’ll stick it on Azure as a legacy.

    • M$ $ony

Time will prove to be my ally and your worst nightmare…

    • You are flat out wrong

Lel. That’s your counter? Just admit you’re wrong and move on.

    • M$ $ony

What’s the point of arguing against your opinions? With no facts to back anything up, but to say it’s common sense. Time will prove you wrong and me right.

    • You are flat out wrong

Sounds like Xdrones when they thought 360 would win this gen instead of being dead last! ^_^

    • M$ $ony

You’re trippin man! I actually feel sorry for you.

  • RJ

I’m not sure which will be better, but I will not be purchasing the Microsoft system because of the silly restrictions they wanted to force down everyone’s throats early on (until they realized nobody was going to buy their console and they had to tuck tail and apologize). My memory is not as short as most.

    • GrowUp

You are an idiot. They were not restrictions, they actually gave you MORE flexibility to move your games around and not require a disc, JUST LIKE STEAM or APPS on your device. Now because of AHOLES like you, we have to take a step back.

    • RJ

Lol, angry? Um, yes they were restrictions – Must log onto the internet everyday to play, Can sell your used games but only if you paid a “fee”, Can loan games to friends but only to a select few, You don’t own your copy of the game you are just borrowing it from the developer. No thanks. You probably think being forced to use Google+ to comment on Youtube is a good idea. We have a difference of opinion, but I don’t think you are an “idiot” or an “AHOLE”…maybe you should grow up kid.

  • francisco garay

Both consoles have a cloud and the PS Vita functionality of the PS4 make it unique. Of course that is without taking account how powerful the PS4 is and all of that jazz.

The American media is completely biased towards the XBOXone. Except the Army and Navy. Honestly if you buy a PS4 and are not a professional gamer or write for games you are probably an idiot.

    • Abba Okoro

      Nope Gaika=/=Windows Azure

Azure is a full Cloud Network while Gaika can only stream to devices

    • You are flat out wrong

      Azure is marketing crap. ^_^

    • Abba Okoro

      LOOOL I’m taking your trolling

    • You are flat out wrong

It’s another MS blunder, like Zune, Surface, Bing and Xbone.

    • Abba Okoro

Ok a 15 billion dollars infrastructure is bad because YOU say so when it exceed’s Google’s cloud network hmmm

    • You are flat out wrong

It is bad when you’re an share holder and you’re watching the company you own a part of put good money into bad.

    • Abba Okoro

What? LOL Windows Azure generated alot of money and is about to generate more with it’s new government service

    • You are flat out wrong

That’s good, they’ll be able to use that instead of Android licenses to prop up the Shitbox brand! ^_^

    • Abba Okoro

????? LOOOOL You must be 12

    • banksst

you realize microsoft says there is basically no chance in all holy hell that microsoft will be able to stream 360 game right?

  • Chris Adamson

ps4 is more powerful…. ps4 has NO GAMES to make it worth getting

    • banksst

It has more games than the xbox one does. Just because xbots have never gotten anything for free doesnt mean the free games such as warframe we are getting arent games. Not to mention, and i quote, “ps4 has more games in developement than anyother console” more than 180 i believe so ya i’d say it has games.

  • luvthesnapper

its coming from GQ mag. give me a break.

  • AnonymUce

“and the PS4′s smaller release game list is working against it.”

    http://ps4daily.com/2013/11/comparing-the-games-lineup-of-playstation-4-vs-xbox-one/

I wonder how much money MS paid GQ for this “review”?

  • banksst

This “review” was written months ago based on no actual use of the consoles. Do you really think they are the only ones who managed to somehow get the consoles months in advance and then allowed to review the consoles despite the embargo? no this is basically just massive BS and is actually most likely microsoft paying them to write it or just as likely a stupid attempt to get a large amount of popularity from “reviewing” them before anyone else
