PS4 Home Menu May Be Getting Ads Soon

This reminds me of a certain console from last generation…

More and more, Sony and the PS4 are beginning to resemble the Xbox 360 and Microsoft from last generation- the same ease of use and development, leading to a favorable environment for third party development, leading in turn to superior multiplatform games and graphical superiority. The same reliance on timed exclusive DLC and exclusive content for multiplatform games, alongside a de-emphasizing of actual exclusives and first party investment. Paid online.

Now there’s another point to chalk up- apparently, Sony are looking to push ads to the PS4 home menu. Neogaf user MMaRsu reports that when he fired up his PS4 to check if Metal Gear Online was working for him, he got greeted by a Destiny logo on his homescreen instead. He doesn’t own Destiny, so he clicked on the icon. Clicking the icon resulted in being directed to the PS Store.

It appears that the ad can be deleted, but it’s still pretty intrusive, and it’s pretty shitty that Sony seems to be imbibing some of the worst of Microsoft from the previous generation. Hopefully Sony hears the inevitable outcry on this issue and pre-empts this by backtracking on this themselves.

I don’t see a problem with Sony advertising games on a games console. This could help people find games they may not know about.

But hopefully it remains just games and doesn’t become Pizza Hut ads or something.

But I do find it kinda of hypocritical when people don’t seem to complain about constant ads on YouTube, Twitch, or their PC.

    • I’m going to assume that a lot of “gamers” use ad blocking software. To me, there are no ads on Twitch, YouTube, or any other site for that matter.

I don’t even want to imagine the comments I’d see if the PS4 got ads before folders.

Also, I just wanted to mention. This is probably due to that “feature” they mentioned at the announcement of the PS4. Download suggested content. Or something like that.

The PS4 already has ads and the people who complain about folders are a very small vocal minority. All the apps on the PS4 can be found in the library section.

    • Yes, the PS4 has ads. They’re under What’s New, not right on the main screen. I couldn’t care less about folders, but it’d something that comes up, every single time there is a firmware update.

Yep and don’t forget about the features. Man Sony has been taking so many features from both Xbox 360 and Xbox One same applies to Microsoft but at least I admit it and I am not a delusional drone like a certain someone (X)

    • XbotMK1

      Lets be real here Terminator.

What did Sony take from the Xbox 360 besides achievements and party chat?

What did Sony take from the Xbox One?

Exactly. Sony hasn’t really been taking things from Xbox but I could almost write a book on the things Microsoft has taken from the PS4 and even the PS3.

The only reason why I point it out whenever Microsoft coppies the PS4, is to expose the hypocrisy of you Xbox fanboys who have done nothing but defend the Xbox One and yet Microsoft has done nothing but mimic the PS4 UI, functionality, and ideas.

    • I’d love to read your book about things Microsoft has taken from the PS4 and even the PS3. Please post it here. It better be a long one because I made popcorn.

    • “There is a ton more if you want.”
      I want. Keep going.

    • GamerJudge

      You ask him:
“I’d love to read your book about things Microsoft has taken from the PS4 and even the PS3. Please post it here.”

      He answer is:
a bunch of articles that have nothing to do with your question lol

    • Yep. He’s the worst kind of troll: completely ignorant, hypocritical, and full of crap.

    • Zubairu

Well he did reply on you with alot of links that’s more than most “trolls” would or can do.
You are the one that is not responding anymore to his “proof” so my question is who is the real troll now

    • GamerJudge

Lol he replied with BS links that have nothing to do with his question. Cop is correct about him being a troll.

    • First of all, he said he would write a book about the topic. His response was to cherry pick hyperlinks to articles he didn’t write, all of which had nothing to do with the topic. He offered no proof. That’s not praiseworthy. It’s a tactic by fanboy trolls like him to try to distract. Then he offered to keep going, so I told him I’d like him to. Then he slithered off, realizing that he had been called out on his crap.

    • GamerJudge

You want to be real? Give me a list of features that the PS4 has that are original, unique, that where first made by Sony and not ideas that where already out there and they just took them and made them in their own image.

Gamingbolt is at it again with their lies and double standards. The PS4 and Xbox One have had ads since the beginning but I haven’t seen you complain about it on the Xbox One.

“Sony and the PS4 are beginning to resemble the Xbox 360 and Microsoft from last generation. The same ease of use”

The PS4 UI isn’t anything like the Xbox 360 UI. The PS4 UI is similar to the PS3 XMB. Microsoft never invented “ease of use” so your claim is really is rediculous. The PS3 XMB was extremely easy to use.

“Leading to a favorable environment for 3rd party development”

You mean like the PS1 and PS2? The Xbox 360 wasn’t the first console to cater to 3rd party development.

“leading in turn to superior multiplatform games and graphical superiority”

Sony heavily advertised 3d graphics with the PS1 and PS2. Sony also heavily advertised graphical capabilities with the PS3. The Xbox 360 didn’t invent the idea of 3d graphics capabilities. Your claim doesn’t make sense.

“The same reliance on timed exclusive DLC and exclusive content for multiplatform games”

Both Sony and Microsoft have done this since the beginning of last generation and they’re still doing it. Microsoft is the one who really started this trend, and you can’t point fingers at Sony when Microsoft is currently doing it just as much.

“Alongside a de-emphasizing of actual exclusives and first party investment.”

Is that why the PS4 currently has twice as many first party exclusives compared to the Xbox One? Yeah, I’m sure Sony is just paying their superior amount of first party studios to not make games”

    “Paid online”

Weren’t you the same people who supported it on the Xbox 360 even though Microsoft wasn’t even giving people games with the service until they coppied PlayStation Plus?

    This article is total hypocrisy.

  • kee1haul

Hilarious that there are people saying ‘yeah, i dont mind, its ok’, are the same people who slated xbox for having them. I never complained because I always wanted to know what was going on; offers, new releases, news

    • XbotMK1

      False

    • GamerJudge

      True.

  • 2econd gpu unlocking

Sony fans will praise this as OK anyway

  • Mr Xrat

No, these are not ads. They are featured content, and they can be turned off at the OS level so if you’re smart and you’re paying attention (like I did) you never have to see them.
