PS4 Pro: Sony Explains Why Memory Was Not Increased From 8GB

The reason, it turns out, is because they want to maintain compatibility wth existing PS4 systems.

The PS4 Pro is a noticeable, if a little inconsequential, bump up over the standard PS4. Sony have increased the speed of the PS4 CPU, enhanced the GPU’s capabilities, and they have increased the memory bandwidth. What they have not done, however, is increase the memory pool itself- as with the original PS4, the PS4 Pro comes with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM.

There’s a reason for that, as it turns out. Speaking to 4Gamer, Masayasu Ito, head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Engineering Division, noted that a change in RAM would either push developers to make games with the increased memory pool in mind, causing compatibility problems with the standard PS4, or, in an effort to maintain compatibility with existing PS4 systems, be ignored- and both are hardly scenarios that Sony want.

So it makes sense why Sony chose to stay with the memory pool that they have- and honestly, it’s not like 8GB of RAM is an issue of any kind. Not many games come even close to requiring that kind of memory. No, in this case, keeping the RAM as is, while also increasing the memory bandwidth on hand, which is what Sony did, sounds like the best thing for Sony to have done.

So where Scorpio has extra Ram over the Xbone the above issues could come to see the light of day. I Scorpio doesn’t exist yet in the hands of the public and only time will tell, but by the time it does come out IMO PS5 will be hot on it’s heels anyway. Sony IMO timed it correct and done the right thing in keeping the PS4-Pro in-line with PS4 for the gamers sake.

Lol…you actually believe that sorry excuse.

    • Gamez Rule

      Yeah I do.

      Time will tell ☺

even if devs develop for more ram, it would probably just be used for better load times, textures, etc…..better graphics and draw distances….more effects, etc…..which would all be FINE to have.

Also more Ram in the box could help improve the UI and OS of the console itself as well.

Man what an odd excuse. A RAM issue? Wow

For the gamers sake? C’mon please, I own a PS4 but Sony is a business first and don’t make business decisions based on what is best for gamers.IMO they did it to keep the price down. Sony doesn’t need to rush the PS5 out as the PS4 is selling just fine IMO.

PS3 to PS4 took Seven Years.

If PS5 got released in 2019 that would be Six years.

If Scorpio released end of 2017 why wouldn’t Sony release Two years after a next gen console?

    • chestwig

2019 is possible I agree but when you said hot the heels I didn’t think you meant 2 years later. TBH i’m sure sony will be fine. Since i’m not desperate for VR I am happy with my regular PS4 until then 🙂

    • Gamez Rule

Could be less than two years if MS held Scorpio back till beginning of 2018? But the PS4 Pro is a good choice of console if people don’t have a PS4 already.

    • chestwig

I don’t think MS can afford to delay it, if they do they are screwed. My only worry is that with the price of the pro why would anyone buy a slim? If my PS4 breaks I would get the pro in a heart beat not the slim.

    • Gamez Rule

I agree, and that’s what got me thinking that this generation will not last as long as the previous one?

    • chestwig

You’re right, I just hope they don’t start with the modular upgradeable consoles or else we may as well buy a PC which I don’t want to do.

    • cweb1988

well they’re clearly doing that man. Although it’ll be more like each generation will have tiers now. Base model….high end model.

  • kee1haul

No…..the best thing for Sony to have done would have been increase the RAM to 12GB and increase the bandwith to match scorpio.

    • Mark

Ahaha. That’s bewildering to me…..compatibility issues? Wha?

    • Mr Xrat

You’re delusional if you think the Shitpio will be any different considering it’ll also be an iterative console.

    • DA-ROOSTER

The Scorpio is 3X more powerful than the weaker PS4 PRO and the PRO is using 10 year old Blu-ray technology lol
Sony completely botched the PS4 PRO

    • Mr Xrat

Shitpio is iterative, Kirk. Shitpio will be using the old CPU, Kirk.

Time for reality to bite, Kirk. 🙂

    • kee1haul

The specs are largely already announced. It’s miles better than Neo.

    • Mr Xrat

You’ve got two details, Mark. That’s it. I supposed they had to chuck you something at that weak E3.

  • PonyExpress

    More bull from Sony.

  • DA-ROOSTER

    More damage control from Sony

  • cweb1988

Nope….sorry……they didn’t up it so they could keep the price low…..which is a trade off…..not necessarily a bad thing……but it makes it an update that’s not really worth it for those that already own PS4.
