PS4 Pro’s Lack of 4K Blu-Ray Drive Addressed by Sony’s Jim Ryan

Price is only one factor of several.

Positives and negatives aside regarding the PlayStation 4 Pro’s spec sheet, one disappointment that many found common ground with is in the lack of a 4K Blu-ray drive to play ultra HD media. As it turns out, this was done not only with price and functionality (along with encouraging streaming, especially with that fancy Netflix association in the background), but to also position the PS4 Pro as a gaming device.

PlayStation global head of marketing and sales Jim Ryan told The Telegraph that price was only “one of a number of factors. As we’ve said ad nauseum, this is positioned primarily as a gaming device.

“Every design decision is taken with the gamer in mind in terms of specifications, functionality, price and various features. All of those things combine with our view that we want to future proof ourselves and increasingly the trend of consuming video content is from streaming services.”

Is that good enough for you? What if Project Scorpio counters this by including a 4K Blu-ray drive (since native 4K resolutions have already been confirmed)? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

yes…. give gamers less options, what a crazy excuse.
Only a Fanboy will agree that they should take out options just to focus on gaming….

    • crazy_black_man-

And only an idiot would ignore the fact that the Xbox One has been experiencing the removal of options and features that were present at launch with each incoming software update…in order to focus more on gaming. Another willfully ignorant, big mouth idiot here folks.

    • DA-ROOSTER

The cheaper Xbox One S has a 4K Blu-ray player over the new PS4 PRO there’s no excuse for this
Only a dumb Pony would defend Sony for this

    • crazy_black_man-

The excuse is that the PS4 Pro is a game console.

A 4k UHD disc holds more data than a standard blu ray.

    • crazy_black_man-

What did you say last gen Troy, when the PS3’s Bluray disc held more data than the Xbox 360’s DVD discs? Where you critical of MS?

You know, willfully ignorant guys like you who don’t stop and think before they run their big mouths are quite hilarious.

    • Troy Marcel

You are the ignorant one, you could install games on the 360 negating the superiority of Blu ray. I still think Microsoft should of put in HD DVD in the 360.

    • crazy_black_man-

Shut up you eccentric disc swapping caveman. It was a problem on day one for developers. Use your head Troy.

    • Psionicinversion

the bluray drive in the ps3 was to help it win the format war for films

    • crazy_black_man-

And the Xbox 360 had an afterthought add on drive. What is your point?

  • Gamez Rule

Still a good price for a games console, and lets be honest how many people have 4k UHD discs when compared to Blu-ray disc and DVDs? Bet most people steam the 4k content anyway?

PS4 Pro is still supporting high-quality up-scaling of DVD and Blu-ray disc content IF your TV doesn’t already do so, BUT I am shocked that Sony didn’t place a 4k Blu-ray drive in PS4-Pro as they have always given gamers a multi-media-games-console in the past?

    • Jules Winnfield

I don’t know, but I would at least want to know that the device i’m buying is somewhat future proof.

    • Gamez Rule

Streaming is the way forward and would be the more future proof way too go BUT at the same time not everyone nowadays can stream everything, hence why I was shocked Sony made that choice this gen.

    • Psionicinversion

sure streaming is more convenient but your smart TV does it anyway. so its hardly a selling feature and yeah peoples internet still arent upto scratch everywhere, data caps etc and its funny cus they mocked xbox for a similar thing at its launch. even though it would of been worse than this on xbox but it still saying you have to be always online to see a 4K film

    • Gamez Rule

Truth is it should have had a 4K Blu-ray drive as standard BUT from what I understand a firmware update could allow this to happen although Sony stated they wouldn’t do it.

Time will tell I guess as it’s like when MS got a lot of negative feedback they went back on their words.

    • Psionicinversion

No I’m pretty sure they have a different laser inside to read larger capacity discs. Why would you put a 4k bluray player in that could cost 2-3x that of a normal one then not allow it to run 4k blurays. Pointless. To my knowledge Sony hasn’t stated anything of the sort

    • Gamez Rule

Andrew House said that it will not be possible to add 4K UHD to PS4 Pro via a firmware update.

    • Psionicinversion

So your saying they can’t do it? Just checking because it contradicts what you previously said. It did seem weird because one of the reasons they said it can’t do UHD bluray is because of cost so sounded stupid to spend the money on the hardware to not use it

    • Gamez Rule

What I stated didn’t contradict what I posted at all☺

“BUT from what I understand a firmware update could allow this to happen although Sony stated they wouldn’t do it”— “Andrew House said that it will not be possible to add 4K UHD to PS4 Pro via a firmware update”

So like I said Sony wouldn’t do it..See pic..

    • Psionicinversion

There’s a difference between wont do it and can’t do it. The only thing I saw about what you said before was from 3 years ago. Obviously that shouldn’t even of been brought up seeing as it’s obviously a load of rubbish

    • Gamez Rule

What you on about now * 3 years go* lol

    • Psionicinversion

Yeah about there could be an update to the bluray player. Google it and a Reddit thread will pop up saying exactly what your saying from 3 years ago because that is the time stamp on the posts

    • Gamez Rule

But I’m not on about 3 years ago… The Verge was only 4 days ago, and Sony replied around that time too with no firmware updates for PS4 Pro.

But truth is the UHD players haven’t really took off like DVD players or Blu-ray players did, but the streaming side of 4k has took off, and maybe that’s why Sony made the choice they did. BUT I think Sony should have placed a UHD into PS4 Pro too keep up with new Tech like they did with PS3 and the Blu-ray format.

    • Psionicinversion

The 4K bluray hasn’t because the players are like £400. Haven’t looked in a while but a few months ago that was the cheapest one. The average person isn’t going to buy a bluray player that’s more expensive than there TV, you can buy 4k tvs for less than £300! Won’t be the best but you can do.

So the X1S has given people an attractive proposition where you can have a gaming machine Plus a bluray player for less. It’s not going be the best 4k bluray player in the world but the average person hasn’t got the best sound system in the world either so it doesn’t matter. If the ps4 slim/pro had one in it would of kickstarted it big time

People need a reason to buy a 4K TV now they’ve got one, 4k decent upscaling on x1s and 4k bluray and mostly dodgy 4k on the pro. So yeah it was a bad move on sonys part. I’m pretty sure people would of been fine with an extra £50 for a 4k bluray on the pro

It doesn’t make no sense to me tbh

    • crazy_black_man-

No one gives a crap about 4k Blurays on their game console. Its all about the games son. Get over it. You guys are still not over HD DVD losing the format war to Sony. Get over it,

    • Psionicinversion

because its stupid to advertise all 4K and then not have the bluray drive to match. Suicide Squad is releasing on 4K bluray with HDR. what better way to show off your new TV. “You guys” pretty sure pc players couldnt care less about that….

    • Gamez Rule

To be fair streaming is the way forward ( we know this much ) but truth is 4k UHD disc sales haven’t been the best even when compared to Blu-ray disc sales which were behind DVD disc sales, so Sony made a choice to follow the streaming path which also keeps money down to the buyer for a games console while keeping in touch with the way for *Streaming*.

The PS4-Pro up-scales Blu-ray to 4k anyway, and most people cannot tell the difference.

    • Kush_Killer

I’m still buying day one a little disappointed in lack of the options also since blu-ray is sonys baby. Still can’t wait to play the on my x850d

  • DA-ROOSTER

Fact 4K Blu-ray discs offer superior image quality over streaming 4K content
Sony really crapped on their user base with this
The PS4 PRO is a half of a 4K device

    • crazy_black_man-

Did you buy a game console when you really wanted a Roku?

    • Delusionalfanboys

I buy my consoles to play games. PS4 Pro $399.99 twice as powerful than the PS4 . For the same freaking launch price of the PS4. Can’t be that at all, I can’t play games on a movie player. So why gaf about movies playing a console, lol.

  • Starman

    Lmfao……GTFO, If you’ll believe that ,I have a bridge to sell you….

  • Mr Xrat

Ghostbusters should give Xgimps something to do while they wait for games!

  • Blue Gum

The only changes over classic PS4 are improved SoC on 14nm(not even much of an improvement), slightly faster RAM(not much cost difference) and a slightly better power supply.

None of those things would cost enough to force them to leave out the UHD BR drive; The only thing that leaves is they simple wanted to have a higher profit margin.

I’m skipping this gen and will wait for next gen, that way 4K HDR TV’s will be cheap and they will have a 4k HDR Blu-Ray player in the box.

    • Kush_Killer

I don’t know what your reading but it’s twice as fast and stronger than OG PS4, and only 10% difference between native 4K.

    • Blue Gum

      Like I said, not much.

  • Luke Skywalker

A lot of people are saying streaming is the way forward and that’s where Sony is heading…..so I’m wondering will those people be ok with the ps5 not having a 4K Blu-ray drive too?

  • Jarelle pate

Why it does not have a 4k blue ray drive. Also which system is better ps4 slim or pro.

  • Delusionalfanboys

Thought it was about adressing the resolution and fps ?. Sony heard ppl whining over that and they address it with the more powerful PS4 Pro for $399.99. Now ppl crying about cheap a 4k movie player not being a gaming console. If the added that and the console cost$ 599.99. It would be whining about the price, lol

  • Xbox one s has a damn 4k blu ray drive
