PS4 System Update 4.50 Brings Custom Wallpapers, External HDD Support, and More

Some long requested features, at last.

The upcoming PS4 system update sounds rather exciting, bringing with it features that multiple PlayStation users have wanted for a while. The big one, of course, is external HDD support, since users will now finally and at last be able to run data directly off of an external HDD. External HDD support is limited only to USB 3.0 drives (so some of your older HDDs that you may have might not work), but will support HDDs as large as 8TB- I’m actually not even sure that 8TB HDDs exist right now.

External HDDs can also be managed directly from the Data Management screen, and contents on it can be launched and run normally, with no difference between running something off of external storage, or off of the internal one.

That apart, this update also brings the addition of custom wallpapers with it, as well as a list of improvements and streamlining for the notifications list and Quick Menu. It sounds like a solid update all around, bringing a whole host of improvements and features fans have wanted for a while with it to the table.

The beta for the update started today- the final update should release some time later, presumably early next month.

10TB drives are already around. 12 and 16TB are on the way for this year.
Typically Enterprise drives designed to run 24/7. Very long life. Also expensive except when compared to a SSD. lol

Boom. Custom wallpapers. While the Xbox One is removing it’s original vision of assorted non gaming related bloatware like “Snap”, that have been slowing it down to a crawl, the PS4 is continuously adding exciting useful features, and just keeps on getting better!

Just been playing around with the PSVR and 3D blu-rays, it works amazingly well ! It has to be said , this is a damn good update.

    • crazy_black_man-

I can’t wait to try that out! Sounds awesome.

Oh, Sony/PS4 is again copying/ripping off the Xbox One features. Well better late than never.

    • Dougdec92

Ohk so xboxone just had to copy bluray tech from Sony, talk about double standards….and what the heck did you think all those high speed USB ports were for?, give us a break oh ye hypocrite.

    • quantum

Don’t be childish, it’s not as if Sony copied gamertags, consoles with hd’s, xbox live, achievements and party chat…….oh wait

    • Mr Plinkus

If you want to be pathetic, gamer tags were on the P.C way before Xbox , consoles with a HD……the PS 2 could be installed with an HD , The Sega Dreamcast had an online mode before Xbox , there was achievement systems on many P.C games before Xbox , and of course the P.C had party chat before the Xbox too…..
Microsoft ‘borrowed’ these ideas and put them into one system , but don’t you dare try and tell anyone that MS was the company who came up with these ideas , because they weren’t.

    • quantum

Lol so you’re you are saying that Sony didn’t rip-off xbox? But instead they rip-off PC and Sega? Lol don’t forget that they also ripped off Nintendo with the analogue stick and rumble pad. Or sorry I mean ‘borrowed’.
Lighten up dude I was just having a dig at the guy for overreacting.

External HDD support and wallpapers were on the PS3. Try again Terminator aka Darth Vader/Gamerjudge/Strike.

Strong update. I sense a lot of impotent bitterness from Xgimps very soon.

    • Michael

Nope, sony copies everything anyway. Xbox has already been there and done that.

    • Mr Xrat

      “been there and done that”

Just like the remains of its sad little game lineup.

Cool update, I have just purchased a 2TB external drive, although I think I will swap the internal to 2TB and use the caddy for the old internal 1TB which I will then be able to use as external PS4 storage.
