PS4 vs. Xbox One Resolution Debate Is Unwinnable, Says TitanFall Developer

“It’s the console wars. It’s Sega does what Nintendon’t.”

Console wars enthusiasts revel in every new console release, and one of the biggest console rivalries in the history of the industry- PlayStation vs Xbox- has grown much more heated ever since the Xbox One and the PS4 came out. One of the “weapons” that PS4 fanatics have had in their arsenals to put down the Xbox One fans is the fact that it doesn’t have as many games running at 1080p as the PS4 does. In fact, even the Xbox One’s flagship title- TitanFall- doesn’t run at 1080p.

Titanfall producer Drew McCoy has a much less enthusiastic outlook about this rivalry, and says that “console wars” are unwinnable.

“It’s the console wars. It’s Sega does what Nintendon’t,” McCoy said in conversation with GameSpot at PAX East when quizzed about why he thought the issue with TitanFall and its lack of 1080p visuals had become such a major topic amongst gamers recently. “There’s going to be games that look better on one or the other. There’s going to be exclusives that look better, for whatever reason. And we never set out to engage in the tech war. I feel like that’s a war that no one actually wins.

“We consciously just decided that we’re going to make a game that’s fun and new and exciting and then worry about making it as good-looking as we can,” he added. “And I don’t think we made an ugly game, but no one in the office will tell you we made the prettiest game out there. Or [the one that] runs at the highest resolution.”

“We have more that we can do,” McCoy continued. “We’re looking at performance stuff on Xbox One; the PC patch added some stuff; and we’re working with NVIDIA for some things on PC as well. At the end of the day we don’t really care. People were roasting us because we run at higher than 720p but we’re not a solid locked [60fps] yet. And it’s like, ‘Yeah, well you know what, guess what? The GPU isn’t always a thing that limits your frame rate and your performance.’ So we hit the highest resolution we could without limiting the GPU.”

We thought TitanFall was pretty damn good despite it not running at 1080p, so we can see his point. You can read our review of the MMO first person shooter here- Xbox One version and PC version reviews are through these hyperlinks.

The only problem with this “game that’s fun and new and exciting” is the only people I know who have an X1 are 13yr old kids of friends. I now have to ask them to put it on to have a go, as they’ve stopped playing it already. These guys used to eat me for lunch on COD or BF which they still play regularly, as I have to hide from them or the join my games and then hunt me down 🙂

Where did you get that statistic? I always thought that parent buy their kids PS4 because it’s cheaper than Xbox.

Its not a statistic. It is my own personal experience. How about a statistic that shows it’s parents buying PS4’s cuz in my experience they may not be adults :-), but they’re over the age of 18 and dont live at home anymore

I remember playing my favorite game of all time Half Life 2 at the lowest settings and 1024×768 resolution because that was all my PC at the time could handle. It was awesome, greatest experience of my gaming life.

This is what should be most important the game features, while I have a PS4 and not an X1, I’m glad they are trying to at least steer the conversation in the right way, it’s about the game and experience, if you have the console of your choice or both enjoy them why try to make someone convert to what you want?
