So exactly what everyone expected.

With the original Xbox, Microsoft had Halo- with that Xbox exclusive series, they redefined first person shooter games for an entire generation of gaming and beyond, on consoles and PC. With the Xbox 360, they had Gears of War. With that Xbox exclusive series, they redefined third person shooters for an entire generation of gaming and beyond, for consoles and PC. With Xbox One, they tried to have Titanfall, but things didn’t pan out the way they wanted them to.

The game, which was never quite exclusive to begin with, was praised for its innovative take on the first person shooter genre last year, but it fizzled out pretty quickly due to its absolute lack of content- the fact that it had restricted itself to the less popular console could not have helped its case either. It was only a matter of time before EA decided to jump ship and make it multiplatform- indeed, there had been rumblings to that effect for quite a while now. And now, exactly what everyone has been expecting for a while has happened- Respawn has confirmed Titanfall 2, and they have also confirmed that it will be coming to PS4 as well, in addition to Xbox One and PC.

“I guess EA announced a sequel, so I could play coy and pretend I don’t know anything about it, or… yeah. So we’re working on a sequel. No official name yet, but we’re working on that. That’s the main focus but we’re starting up a second team and doing some smaller stuff too. Small, exploratory, taking it slow! It’ll be multiplatform,” said Respawn’s Vince Zampella.

Respawn also expressed regret at limiting the original game to just the Xbox One. When they were asked what they could change about the original game, their response was,

“Platform for me comes to mind right away.” Though Zampella then explained, “Well, we needed that, though. We couldn’t do the game,” they said, referencing the fact that the game, which had been in development limbo, had been bailed out by Microsoft backing the project with cash in return for its exclusivity.

“If we could do it though?” he continued. “It would have been prohibitive to do that – we definitely made the right choices for the right reasons – but if you’re saying what would we have liked to have done? The opportunity to be multiplatform could have made it even more significant for us.

So, yes. Titanfall 2 is a thing. And as expected, it will now be coming to PS4 as well. Maybe that will lead to a rise in its popularity. We’ll see.
