Today, Ubisoft announced the development of Rocksmith, a new video game franchise that is set to revolutionize the music genre. Rocksmith is the first and only game where players can plug any real guitar with a standard quarter-inch input jack into an Xbox 360, a PlayStation3 or PC, and play through an in-depth library of music including everything from the latest hits to classic rock songs.

Featuring gameplay that automatically adjusts to the player’s skill level and innovative game design that makes reading music visually fun and intuitive, Rocksmith engages experienced musicians and those who are picking up a guitar for the first time. The game includes a sizeable library of music from classic rock bands to current artists, such as The Animals, The Black Keys, David Bowie, Interpol, Nirvana, and The Rolling Stones.

“Rocksmith is the most authentic and addictive music game ever created,” said Geoffroy Sardin, HQ Chief Marketing & Sales Officer at Ubisoft EMEA.  “Whether a beginner or a seasoned guitarist, players can progress at their own speed and walk away from the game with the ability to play songs by memory.  Rocksmith is the only video game that gets players stage-ready.”

Developed by Ubisoft, Rocksmith is slated to be released in the second half of calendar year 2011.

Rockband 3 does this already. Harmonix has a fuly functional electric guitar w/ built in 360 compents for $275. I don’t see Rocksmith doing this for any less without using a plastic controller guitarlike the pro-guitar which is like $150.

this game is either too late or too early to launch.

Was a lil surprised @ this announcement after the cancellation of GH & the drop in revenue of all music games. It is neat that u can use a real guitar on this 1 tho.

Yeah, Rockband has already done this…

thsi is not gonna work…as sad as it is for me to say, the music genre is dead. They killed it by over saturating the market. IGN had a good article on the Guitar Hero series shortly after it was cancelled. It said Guitar hero came out with approx. 20 games sinse GH1…way to kill it guys.

      No kidding.
When they had band centric games is when they lost me. They were pinching ideas just to sell it down our throats.

what are u talking about ROCK OF THE DEAD was the bomb

I guess Ubisoft wants a shot at this genre. A little too late, but I’m betting their main selling point is to advertise it as much as possible, considering it’s been done already.
They might change some things around though, and innovate. But if this is the only part that’s innovating, then it’ll flop.

Seems like they are only doing this cause Guitar Hero is dead. Using a real guitar sounds like a interesting idea though but I haven’t really been keeping up with any of these music games so maybe not original.

I’ve been hoping they’d come out with something like this. Guitar Hero is dead and I get tired of playing the old ones over and over; hearing the same songs repetitively.

Absolutely brilliant game. As a gtsiariut (albeit not a very good one) I never had any interest in rockband / guitar hero, but this is a different story. The game is extremely well executed and fun to play. A few minor gripes, but nothing worth mentioning. But, I will advise against ordering the bundle. Only because my guitar arrived broken now I have to go through the lengthy return process. It was not adequately packaged and as a result it’s not surprising it didn’t survive the shipping. By all means buy the bundle from a shop (it’s quite good value), but don’t get it posted.
