Takashi Sensui

If you happen to visit this site often, which I like to think you do, you will have seen our piece on the Head of Xbox in Japan, Takashi Sensui saying “I want a better performance than our past consoles. With a generational change between game consoles there’s a possibility that the market share could shift as well. We have set big goals.”

Well I too can set big goals, like trying to fly without wings. And I too, very much like the Xbox One in Japan, can fail miserably straight out of the gate. The launch of the Xbox One in Japan really was quite a painful to see. There was entire areas set out to help control queues, there was signs everywhere and everything was that shade of Xbox Green that we’ve all grown accustomed to. The only thing that was missing? Well… people, quite frankly.

No one cared.

Since then, Takashi Sensui has commented on the power differences of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 which is a bit of an old topic by now, but it’s still important. He is a firm believer that the graphical fidelity of a game aren’t the most important aspect of a game, which pretty much everyone already knows. He does admit that the PlayStation 4 is the more powerful device, but he thinks that this isn’t really a contributing factor given that both systems will eventually produce graphically pleasing games. Which in my not so humble opinion, is kinda missing the point. If we can produce a great game, but make it beautiful, does that not trump a game that is simply great?

To that end, Sensui says that exclusives are an important part of a consoles success but that the resources required to make these ever more ambitious games puts a strain on developers and their ability to develop in multiple platforms. It sounds as though Takashi wants to commit to Xbox One, but can’t quite bring himself to do so.

Thanks, DualShockers, AV Watch.

  • Either this article is poorly written because its all over the place for one thing or its completely misleading. In the other article he seems to be saying that the power difference is being negated and going forward it wont matter much. Also exclusives are the way to tell the truth about your consoles performance. This Gen there will be less exclusives because of the amount of resources it takes to develop triple A titles. Japan is just not into the Xbox brand and if America was the same way with the PlayStation they would be in serious trouble. That said I don’t think Microsoft even considers them a serious market. I know I wouldn’t.

They don’t consider them a serious market and never have. Read my post from deeper explanation.

“Also exclusives are the way to tell the truth about your consoles performance.”
Oh well if MS say so, then so be it, it must be true. Fanboys believe anything their corporate overlords tell them, eh?

    • At least they don’t Make Believe.

Oh, ha ha ha, thats wwas so clever! Not! Now kneel before the images of two of your corporate overlords! (sound of the whip cracking)

    • Whack!

There will be no parity if PS4’s stronger hardware is being pushed. In essentially every way, the PS4’s hardware is more powerful than the XBO’s.

If they’re the same resolution, PS4 will have a framerate or visual effects advantage, or its stronger hardware isn’t being pushed.

Factual PS4 Hardware Advantages: +6 CUs, +540 GFlops (40% greater) or more (1.3TF to 1.84TF), +16 ROPs, +6 ACEs/CQs, better GPGPU support (volatile bit and onion+ gpu cache bypass bus), better performing CPU, faster unified memory, and less OS overhead.

No amount of API updates is going to make up for that hardware gap.

    • LOL. Same BS different day. Here’s a new post for you to copy and paste. If Xbox stronger unknown architecture is being utilized. Then there will be no parity for the ps4 using next Gen engines to develop games. Soon this industry will be moving forward. Prepare yourself or stay foolish.

Ignoring the odd structure of this article and focusing just on the launch itself.. Nobody should be shocked.

No american console has ever done well in Japan. Forgetting the fact that they are incredibly xenophobic for a moment historically speaking there is no reason to expect great sales out of the Xbox in Japan.

So the xenophobia thing. Japan is well known for not only ignoring outside products but also downright hating them before they have even been released based on nothing other than they come from companies that aren’t Japanese. They are a very staunch isolationist culture and probably always will be. Even if the Xbox was the most powerful system ever made, had the same exact games as Nintendo and or Sony, had a controller and console design that they just loved to death it still would not sell.

Its incredibly difficult to break into Japan. Only apple has had any success at that in the last 40+ years and even then the iPhone isn’t big there like it is in the rest of the world.

Its a losing battle but it’s a battle Microsoft absolutely has to fight. They need a box in Japan to help court Japanese developers. While Japanese games aren’t what they used to be there is still a small market for them in the West. Microsoft knows full well they will just bleed money in Japan. They knew it with the original Xbox they knew it with the 360 and they know it with the Xbox one. There isn’t much they can really do about it because its a cultural thing. The Japanese openly mock foreign people in public often to their faces. Yes they can also be friendly. I know first hand as I’ve been there twice for training at my job but unless they specifically know you they can be quite unfriendly.

    • Agreed. I noticed that also. Its a real shame too because some miss a chance to experience great products and leave them stuck in decadence. Even when it seems they are making technical advancements. The rest of the major nations seem to surpass them about time their so called new technology is released to the public.

ok what about other things like windows OS, apple products and other things but because it Xbox it overrides those things?. FYI its the same for china they don’t care for Xbox they want a ps4.

    • d0x360

That’s odd I’m pretty sure I mentioned apple…maybe you should read the post again.

As for Windows. You are comparing the worlds most widely used operating system to consumer electronics. That’s an incredibly silly point.

China? Are we talking about China? I don’t think we are nor do I think any of us can presume to know what China wants.

You can disagree with me all day and all night. Do a little research. That’s all it takes to see that the Japanese don’t like outside consumer electronics or most anything else.

Or you can be ignorant. Your choice.

PS is a more popular brand in China and PS4 will outsell Xbox in both Japan and China, like everywhere else in the world.

    • Guest

bu, bu, but wait til they release in all the other countries. Next up China. And excuses, excuses, excuses. Apple and Android seem to be going fine over there and they are……wait for it………Americans. Now continue on with your constant damage control for MS.

    • d0x360

Bu bu bu Japans dislike of outside technology and people is well documented. You can argue with me all you want fact is you can easily research my concepts and conclusions and see they are based in reality.
Apple is not popular in Japan either. Do people own I phones? Yep, but not like they do here or anywhere else in the world.

China? I’m not talking about China. Japan and China are entirely different countries with different people living in them. The Japanese and Chinese don’t like each other. Why do you insist on trying to compare them? Is it because they are both Asian? Are you dull enough to presume that makes them similar?

I don’t give a damn how many consoles Microsoft or Sony sell. All I care about is games which is punctuated by the fact that I own an Xbox one, ps4 and wiiu. This conversation is about a XENOPHOBIC CULTURE and the obstacles that culture presents. Leave the fanboy at the door. Not everything is about your precious preference to a chunk of silicone.

Or…you can keep acting like an ignorant shill blind to the world around you.

      Bu bu bu
