The Order: 1886 Developer Defends Bungie’s Destiny

‘Anything under an 8 is ridiculous!’

Destiny

Bungie’s Destiny may have been one of the most overhyped and underdelivering products of all time, as with its massive budget and incredible amount of hype, it opened to extremely mixed reviews and reception from the gaming public, with its current Metascore being 75- all in all, an inauspicious start to what Bungie hoped would be an all new universe.

Now, however, a Ready at Dawn developer, namely Co-founder Andrea Pessino, who took to Twitter to rage about the game, saying that he could not ‘for the life of [him] understand how Destiny could be rated 6… anything under 8 is ludicrous.’

Others soon jumped into the conversation, with someone pointing out that Destiny may be a fairly good game, but it has a lot of issues, especially consid4ering the pedigree of developer Bungie, to which Pessino said ‘It has faults, but come on, a 6? It deserves more just on scope and art.’

Well, Pessino, I have news for you- opinions differ, and I, for one, am very glad that the industry at large has taken to calling out bland and boring AAA games that publishers and developers seem to think can somehow blind players with shiny graphics. Destiny may be an okay game, but as it stands, that is all that it is, and for once, the industry consensus seems to reflect that.

i think the order 1886 team is fricking scared right now, so far from what weve seen it seems to be all style over substance. its good that the industry is finally recognising that just because it has pretty graphics doesnt make it a good game. Destiny is ok but theres nothing innovative and denying ppl of a general chat in the tower is an absolute insanely overlooked feature from a co-operative FPS with social aspects. it doesnt deserve anything higher than an 7.5 in my opinion

The Order seems like a decent third person shooter with gameplay variety and a strong story. The Order impressions at E3 2014 and Gamescom 2014 are generally positive. Anyone who likes cinematic 3rd person shooters will like both The Order and Quantum Break. You should give the game a chance.

Cover shooters with a story focus are among some of the highest rated games last gen (The Last of Us, Uncharted, Gears of War, etc.). Devs have said QTEs will be infrequent. Look at the latest Gamescom 2014 trailer where they show new weapons, melee combat, and stealth takedowns.

The Order runs at 1920×800, or 6.7% greater resolution than 1600×900 (900p). It runs at a reportedly locked 30 fps with little/no tearing. The latest Gamescom build and trailer looks even better than previous realtime footage. All cutscenes are realtime so transitions are seamless.

The Order dev was also quick to shut down speculation that the hotly anticipated adventure will be little more than a straightforward third-person shooter. “[There will be a] lot variety in the things that you do moment to moment,” he added.

Another way The Order is trying to stand out in a crowded genre, Weerasuriya said, is by paying careful attention to pacing, ensuring that gameplay changes on a moment-to-moment basis. “We didn’t want it to be a grind for 40-45 minutes because you’re in shooting mode. Everything in the game happens in little bursts, and that really makes you not dwell too much on one thing that might otherwise bore you.”

When questioned about the lycans, they implied that more creatures may be on the horizon, not just werewolves. This leaves a lot of room for imagination and the reassurance that 1886 is going to have a wide variety of enemies.

yeah so what, most ppl loved the beta of destiny and its turn out to be just an ok game, its not bad its definately not great, its just alright some parts id say good but overall its just good. id say 7.5 max becuase the amount of time money and people working on this its quite small. Sure theres DLC coming but hitting you with a season pass straight out the door says to me they made it small on purpose just so youd pay for the season pass which is BS.

So dont give this wall of text BS lets see how it actually is. For the gameplay of the order how do we know they havnt selected only the good bits?? like a trailer in a film shows the best parts of the film then some times the rest of the film sucks, could be the same here

The Order won’t be some kind of The Last of Us masterpiece, but it seems like a decent 3rd person cover shooter. 70-80 on metacritic.

Not enough story focus .. . literally the game explains NOTHING at the start. You are just left there without a decent opening story or anything .. . kind of felt like I was playing left 4 dead honestly. I NEED a good story to keep me going. Which is why The Last of US was one of my favorite games ever.

i think its a 3 part story, start middle and end, 3 games. problem is its mostly to short. when you complete the black garden that bird goes on about how theres more work todo out there in the universe so yah

This has to be sufficient for a true follower of the Light(c)

Sony defends Sony , no surprise there ……lol

    • Bungie is 3rd party and Destiny is published by Activision, also 3rd party.

  • I think it should be a little higher also, but I can understand why it got so many 6’s. What I think is funny is how RaD’s comment may be more indicative of The Order’s future scoring considering how small a lot of the game sequences shown so far have been. It looks beautiful, just like Destiny, but the gameplay looks horrible and limited. Where as for Destiny, the gameplay was awesome but the story could have used more work…
