The Switch Will Have More Exclusives In 9 Months Than The Xbox One Has Had In All Of 2016 and 2017 Put Together

An in-depth analysis on Xbox’s dire exclusives situation, highlighted via an unflattering comparison.

I‘ve been screaming myself hoarse on this thing for a while, now- but the Xbox One exclusives situation is extremely dire. I’ve talked about it variously, at length, multiple times before. Microsoft’s situation with first party investment in big budget exclusives for the Xbox One has never been worse than it is right now- the situation looks especially egregious since Microsoft is on the cusp of launching new hardware.

However, nothing highlights the severity of the situation as well as the realization that, in its first nine months on the market – from March 3, 2017 to December 31, 2017 – the Nintendo Switch will end up with more big budget retail exclusives than the Xbox One in all of 2016 and 2017 put together.

Somehow, in nine months, the Switch will end up with more big budget retail exclusives on the market than two years of the Xbox One. The situation is especially troubling since both of these two years, we have been promised by Xbox boss Phil Spencer that Xbox will have its strongest lineup yet.

"Somehow, in nine months, the Switch will end up with more big budget retail exclusives on the market than two years of the Xbox One."

For 2016 and 2017, the exclusive retail game tally for the Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch looks as follows:

XBOX ONE

  1. Forza Horizon 3
  2. Gears of War 4
  3. Quantum Break
  4. ReCore
  5. Dead Rising 4
  6. Halo Wars 2
  7. Crackdown 3
  8. Super’s Lucky Tale
  9. Forza Motorsport 7

NINTENDO SWITCH

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  2. 1-2-Switch
  3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  4. ARMS
  5. Splatoon 2
  6. Mario x Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
  7. Pokken Tournament DX
  8. Super Mario Odyssey
  9. Fire Emblem Warriors
  10. Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Now, I already see some counterpoints presumably being raised as objections to this, so let’s address them one by one. First off, yes, the Switch list has games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Pokken Tournament DX, all of which are available on the Wii U too. However, if we were to remove games from the Switch list for also being on the Wii U, we would concurrently also have to remove games from the Xbox One list for being on the PC, in which case we would be left with literally no games on the Xbox One list (and six on the Switch list). True exclusivity is really not an argument that favors the Xbox One at the present.

Yes, the Switch list has 1-2-Switch, which is a pretty mediocre title- but it is no more mediocre than something like ReCore on the Xbox One list. Both are in comparable Metascore ranges, with 1-2-Switch having a 58, and ReCore a 63.

"The Switch list has, on average, higher selling exclusives, the Switch list has a higher average Metascore, and the Switch list has more genre variety (9 genres represented) than the Xbox One list does (5 genres represented). No matter how you attempt to parse the argument, you end up faced with the inescapable conclusion that the Nintendo Switch, in nine months, will show up the last two years of the Xbox One exclusive lineup entirely."

All of this is before we try to parse these lists on other factors- the Switch list has, on average, higher selling exclusives, the Switch list has a higher average Metascore, and the Switch list has more genre variety (9 genres represented) than the Xbox One list does (5 genres represented). No matter how you attempt to parse the argument, you end up faced with the inescapable conclusion that the Nintendo Switch, in nine months, will show up the last two years of the Xbox One exclusive lineup entirely. It’s a bit troubling, and it is inexplicable as to how Microsoft’s exclusives situation has gotten this bad.

An argument often used by many is that Microsoft was focusing on fixing the hardware and network services on the Xbox One first, and they will now focus on games, once the Xbox One X is released. But that argument is fallacious and does not hold up for so many reasons. It fundamentally misunderstands how internal hardware and software development works. 343 Industries, Rare, and Turn 10 did not develop the Xbox One X or Xbox One S hardware, or the Xbox Live suite of services, or the Xbox UI. Microsoft, much like Sony and Nintendo, has different teams for services, different ones for UI, different ones for hardware, and different ones for games. All of them are working on their next project(s) all the time (which is why research on a new console begins as soon as the current one is out). Working on one does not preclude the other- and if it does, then Microsoft has a far larger issue than their lack of exclusives to tackle as a platform holder.

All of which is to say that having new hardware in the work should not at any point interfere with having new games in development. New hardware is always in the work at all three companies- if this line of reasoning were to hold true, then there would never be any new games made. In fact, we already have indication that the successor to the Xbox One X is in development– so are we to assume, going by this line of reasoning, that Microsoft, who are working on new hardware again, will not have their first party exclusives situation improving any time soon? And why is this argument applicable to only Microsoft? Nintendo just released new hardware – in their case, entirely new hardware, not an iterative refresh of their existing console – this year too, and somehow they can manage putting out 10 exclusives in nine months. Would their game output not have been throttled as well if hardware development really did divert resources from game development?

"An argument often used by Xbox fans is that Microsoft was focusing on fixing the hardware and network services on the Xbox One first, and they will now focus on games, once the Xbox One X is released. But that argument is fallacious and does not hold up for so many reasons. It fundamentally misunderstands how internal hardware and software development works."

So, no, this analysis is a stark reminder of the fact that the Xbox One’s exclusive situation is in dire straits right now- and nothing on the horizon seems to indicate that it will get better, either. We can safely assume that new Forza, Gears, and Halo games are coming up, and one or two of them might even release next year. But these expected franchises apart, what else is in the works? Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2? I’m not even going to get into how much Sony’s exclusive lineup for beyond 2017 clowns this- Nintendo, with a new Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Metroid, Kirby, and Yoshi game clown that lineup too (and before someone points out that Fire Emblem, Pokemon, and Metroid barely exist right now, let me remind you that they have at least been officially announced, unlike Halo, Gears, and Forza– I am giving Xbox a concession here).

It is also important because, no matter how much you may try to talk yourself into believing otherwise, exclusive games do matter. They matter because they give depth, texture, and nuance to a platform’s library. Any one exclusive in and of itself may not matter in the large scheme of things (well, unless you are Nintendo)- but in aggregate, yes, having a larger pool of compelling exclusives matters. Exclusives are a large reason why the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One 2:1 in the market, and why the PS4’s sales are accelerating globally in its fourth year. It’s why the Nintendo 3DS has managed to sell 68 million units worldwide on the back of nothing but exclusive games, in a post smartphone and tablet era, as a dedicated handheld. Exclusives are the reason, the only reason, the Nintendo Switch has become Nintendo’s fastest selling device ever, selling 5 million in four months, and currently either #1 or #2 worldwide, landing the Xbox One squarely in third place on month-to-month bases.

No matter how much you try to tell yourself otherwise, they matter. You might point to the Wii U and say, but if exclusives matter so much, why did the Wii U fail? Surely exclusives don’t matter as much, right?

"Using the Wii U as proof that exclusives don’t matter anymore is fallacious, disingenuous, and ignoring the larger context around that system’s failure."

Such an argument would be deliberately ignoring the larger context around the system’s failure. The Wii U was a fundamentally unappealing machine which sunk it, yes, and most people either didn’t know the Wii U existed, or thought it was a pricey add on for the Wii. It had zero awareness, and terrible marketing. This is without addressing the point that over half the Wii U’s exclusives were 2D platformers and sidescrollers sold at full price, that doesn’t pass muster in the present day market context. Of the remaining half, most were not marketed. Four were- Splatoon, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8, and Super Mario Maker, ironically the four that sold the best.

Sorry, but using the Wii U as proof that exclusives don’t matter anymore is fallacious, disingenuous, and ignoring the larger context around that system’s failure, especially when  counter evidence already exists in the form of the 68 million selling 3DS, which sold that much as a handheld in a post smartphone world on the back of nothing but its exclusives. The Wii U is not a good argument that exclusives are immaterial. Nothing is.

Instead of trying to downplay the importance of exclusives, I believe we must ask ourselves where Microsoft’s exclusives situation is headed. It has hit its lowest point ever this year, and with most Microsoft franchises either canceled, or their studios having been shuttered, there is little indication that things are about to get better on this front any time soon. I do hope they do, however- Microsoft has proven to be incredibly receptive to feedback this generation, and they have managed to turn the state of their offerings around remarkably well, as far as their hardware and their services go. It’s just on the games front, the most important part of a console, that they have failed so far. And on that front, a nine month old system will have clowned the last two years of Xbox put together without any effort.

Maybe we should think about that.

He do have a valid point tho

    • It would be like someone writing an opinion piece saying how bad Sony and Nintendo were for not releasing games on PC. Microsoft’s first party output has not been comparable to Nintendo or Sony for a long time.

They have a different strategy. Not saying it’s better or worse but for them as a company they seem to have much different plans. The same way Nintendo doesn’t bother making high end consoles. Microsoft is trying stuff like play anywhere, they charged for online before the competition, and now they have EA Access and Game Pass.

But name on killer app besides halo that makes me want to turn on my Xbox?

    • I don’t know what you’re asking me to base that on. I turn it on for Overwatch lately. Last console exclusive I turned it on for was Tacoma. Yes, I have a PS4 Pro, PSVR, and Switch. Last games I played on those was Crash collection, Psychonauts VR game, and Zelda.

excellent article. my xbox one is gathering dust, sadly, since i tired of the last forza. i bought it day 1, along with ps4. total waste of my cash, im done with the brand now.

Lol, then why is Switch killing it at the moment? Because of great first party games. And you won’t get them on any other platforms. Sure Xbox has good games on it, but 90% of their games you can get on other platforms. Which play better, look better and run better.

    Forza Motorsport 7

How are any of these exclusive when they are all on or coming to PC on release.

    • Vagelis v

They are exclusives for the console. I think the rest of your kind have given up on using this stupid argument long ago. If you game on pc then it really makes no difference to you what those are or aren’t. You cam just play them there.
If you game on a console then it makes no difference where else those games are or aren’t. Cos you have invested on a console and as far as consoles go you can only play them there.

    • Turniplord

They haven’t ‘given up’ they just can’t be bothered dealing with stubborn people like you who don’t know what an ‘exclusive’ is – so they just presume the articles are talking about console exclusives. Something that, in regards to PlayStation, bumps their ‘exclusives’ up from about 150 to over 500.

    • Edward Turvey

You’re trying to make up your own definition of “exclusive”. I’m afraid this lie will not be accepted as the truth. These games are not exclusive, I do not need an Xbox to play them.

“Your kind” what a derogatory comment in reply to a simple fact. “If you game on pc then it really makes no difference to you what those are or aren’t” So you basically want me to ignore it and stop pointing it out, sorry that’s not happening.

    • Vagelis v

No i am simply stating that you are playing word games to de value and make a vlid argument. An exclusive is something that you can not find on a rival platform. Sime as that. If you are planning on buying a console, if you are person who owns a console and invests on that ecosystem than by definition these games are console exclusives because simply put you can not find them on a competing console. What is so difficult for you to fathom? That is why they are called ‘console exclusives’

    • Edward Turvey

Yet my original comment was against the use of the term “exclusive” with no prefix. “Console exclusive” is another matter, but it’s still an arbitrary term contrived to add value to the product. PC does compete with console, no matter what way you slice, both are capable of being gaming devices. At the end of the day, these games aren’t exclusive and that’s just the way it is.

    • Vagelis v

No at the end of the day if you buy a console havig these games as exclusives to that console means it adda value to it’s purchase. Don’t confuse console space with pc space. They arw two different things. At the end of the day you are simply playing semantics and with words to de-valus ms. Can you play gow on the switch or the ps4? No you can’t. It’s as sinple as that.

    • Edward Turvey

Xbox and PC are to different platforms, therefore you cannot have an exclusive of two platforms. That why the term multiplatform exists. It seems to me that you are just trying to retain value for your chosen platform, when in reality that value does not exist.

    • F J

The exclusivity is to Microsoft platform. PC and Xbox compete with one another, however they both are under one umbrella that is Microsoft. Its exclusive to Microsoft and that’s it. Your devaluating the word to make it mean more than it means. Mario Kart can’t be exclusive because I can get it on the Wii (that’s your argument), even though Nintendo is the owner of both platforms.

    • Howie Kearney

your kidding right. buying a game for xbox and getting a free copy to play on a windows 10 pc, which is also Microsoft OS is not a win for a consumer>>?? its one of the best features and an awesome feature Sony can’t claim!

    • Edward Turvey

I didn’t say it wasn’t good for consumers.

    • Vagelis v

What you say is nonsense. I am sorry but it is. I am a console owner i only game on consoles therefore value for me is a notion that is determined from what the console i chose provides me with. Does it provide me with these specific x games? It does. Does another console provide me with these specific x games? No it doesn’t. Therefore calue de facto exsists and is there for me, regardless if they come out on pc or in laptops or whatnot. Being a console owner and investing in this particular space, is where value is found. It makes no difference to me if x games are on pc or not, because simply put i do not own, never had, and never are planning and will own a pc.

    • David Walbrun

Nope, Xbox and PC games published by microsoft are on the same platform. PC games available only on steam are PC exclusive games. Any game that is marketed and published by Microsoft is an exclusive to Microsoft platforms. Microsoft publishes Windows 10, therfore it is a Microsoft platoform. Microsoft also makes the Xbox One, also a microsoft platform. If a game is only available on those two platforms than it is a Microsoft Exclusive. This is not about defending a platform its about not being an uninformed member of the gaming community. You are obviously not informed and do not view games the way they are viewed by the gaming public.

    • Edward Turvey

What about games on Steam that are published by Microsoft?

    • Mark Johnson

i would like argue to much most of them cant afford or know what true pc gaming is. . most the time to me it crossply that i want or smartglass

    • Trekster_Xboxer

      Exculsive to console!!
It has never been stated exclusive to hardware!

Mario Kart 8 is just the same game as it is on the Wii u same as Zelda so those weren’t new exclusives but rehashes of games released years ago.

    • Edward Turvey

Then they should use the term “console exclusive” not just “exclusive”.

    • Trekster_Xboxer

Oh you’re being nitpicky this is been a given since the console Wars began with the Atari 2600 vs intelevision

    • Edward Turvey

No it hasn’t, there is a stark difference between the two terms, it isn’t nitpicking.

    • David Walbrun

That just won’t be the case anymore. I don’t believe any more games will come exclusively to the Xbox One console. Microsoft will go ahead and publish on Windows 10 as well to maximize profit. The whole point is to be able to play the games how you want to play them. On a budget? Play our games on the Xbox One S for only $250, want a better graphical experience in your living room on your new 4k TV? The new Xbox One X can provide just that experience. WANT THE ABSOLUTE BEST QUALITY OF EVERYTHING?, BUY A $2000 PC and play our games there. Microsoft is doing the consumer a favor by providing plenty of options to play their games for all types of gamers. Soooooo when Microsoft publishes a “Microsoft Exclusive” they publish on all Microsoft platforms to give the consumer that choice. Still a microsoft exclsive though. It isn’t PlayStation vs Xbox vs Switch, its Sony vs Microsoft vs Nintendo. Microsoft just gives their consumers more options to play their games.

    • pokeblade101

What? It is not the same game on the Wii-U and Zelda came on the Wii-U the same time it came on the Switch.

    • Gary Leadbeater

Full Exclusive – Games released exclusively on one console.

Platform Exclusive – Games released exclusively on a single family of consoles.

Console Exclusive – Games released for a single console (or family of consoles) in addition to PC.

Timed Exclusives – Games exclusive to a single console (or family of consoles) for a limited time.

Generation Exclusive – Games that are exclusive to one
console from a single generation of consoles, but also released on previous generation consoles.

Peripheral Exclusive – Games that are exclusive to one
console (or family of consoles) that require additional peripherals. (PlayStation VR, Kinect, etc.)

These are the official terminologies when refering to exclusives, as you can see your definition of what an exclusive is, is wrong!! the only one trying to make their own definition of exclusive is you, any game that is on pc that releases on the xbox one family devices but no other console is a console exclusive.

    • Edward Turvey

If. I. Do. Not. Need. To. Buy. Your. Hardware. To. Play. The. Game. It’s. Not. Exclusive

    • Gary Leadbeater

Serious question, ARE YOU A STUPID?, do you need windows 10 to play them? yes, can you play them on any other console? no, that makes them both a console exclusive and a platform exclusive, you cant just play them on any old pc(it has to be windows 10 which is microsoft’s platform) and you cant play them on any other console!!

    • Edward Turvey

So what if you need Windows 10 to play some of them? It’s still a different playform.
Do you need to pay for Windows 10. No.
Do you need Windows 10 to play Quantum Break, Dead Rising 4 and Cup Head. No

    • Edward Turvey

You’re not getting are you. PC and Xbox and separate platforms, doesn’t matter what OS is running on the PC, it’s not an Xbox ergo it’s a different platform. Not to mention that not all the Xbox games listed require Windows 10. I’ll ignore your insult as a moment of misjudgement, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

    • chance

You can’t play them on any other consoles. That makes them exclusives.

    • Edward Turvey

      No it doesn’t

    • CSStrowbridge

This reminds me of when networks started advertising summer repeats as, “New to you.”

Exclusives are only exclusive if they give you a reason to buy the console. If I can play the game on PC, then it is not exclusive.

    • Joe_HTH

“If I can play the game on PC, then it is not exclusive.”

Sooner or later you morons are going to have to wrap your head around the fact that Microsoft doesn’t care where you play their games, as long as you play it, they make money. They make next to nothing on hardware.

    • mark0394

Microsoft is not in direct competition with PC…. No console gamer is gonna spend 1000$ on a pc to do what 500$ console will do

    • Edward Turvey

      A $500 console can’t do 1% of the things a $1000 PC can do.

    • mark0394

That’s all great but I am talking strictly gaming… That’s y I said console gamers because we wouldn’t need all that other stuff

    • David Walbrun

An exclusive to Microsoft Hardware is still an exclusive. Microsoft merged their PC and Console game divisions so their games are interchangable (Play Anywhere initiative) whether you play on console or PC. They are still microsoft exclusive games. Imagine if Sony had a robust computer operating system that only ran on Sony PCs. You could bet PlayStation games would be available on that service, but they don’t and Sony games are availbe on Sony platforms just as Microsoft games are on Microsoft platforms. How you don’t understand this is really baffling to me. Yes there are many PCs out there, but they all run MICROSOFT’s OPERATING SYSTEM. Try playing xbox games on linux, or mac OS, they wont work, so therfore those games are exclusive to microsoft hardware.Whehter it be a Windows 10 PC or an Xbox One (S or X).

    • Edward Turvey

They are different platforms, I don’t care how Microsoft words it, it isn’t exclusive.

    • supernet2

Exclusive means restricted or limited to the person, group, or area concerned. As i see it, if they say its exclusive to “microsoft” and only microsoft, then that means it is exclusive. But in the case of exclusive to their platform alone, thats not the case, given MANY of microsofts games are not considered “exclusive”. Exclusive hardware wise? No, Exclusive platform wise “no” because a PC is fundamentally different from a console. These X1 fools just dont understand. Lol

    • NewestType

      Wow…

      Um.

      No.

    • CSStrowbridge

I don’t know about most people, but I need a computer at home to do my job. It is cheaper to spend the extra money to make my PC a gaming PC than it is to buy a console. The number of games I can’t buy on PC is so small that it is not worth buying any console. The Switch comes the closest, the XBox isn’t even worth considering.

    • CSStrowbridge

Sooner or later you morons are going to have to wrap your head around the fact that Microsoft uses “Exclusive” as a marketing terms to sell the hardware. Obviously they care about hardware sales, if they are trying to sell the XBox based on the exclusives.

    • As someone who’s been enjoying Forza Horizon 3 on PC, I still count it as an Xbox exclusive title. Let me explain…

Yes, it is indeed true that almost all of the Xbox One’s exclusive titles are also available on Windows, but they still can’t be played on any other console platform. There are some PS4 titles that are also CONSOLE-only exclusives, yet nobody seems to discredit those.

The biggest factor in this argument is that even if the game is avaliable on PC, you need to remember that not: 1.) Not everybody owns a competent PC and/or 2.) There are folks who simply prefer playing on consoles. Since Microsoft owns Windows, there’s still revenue being generated by the games dual-releasing on Xbox One and Windows.

So, yes, the Xbox One does have exclusive games. This isn’t grasping for straws, and again, I’ve been enjoying Forza Horizon 3 on PC for months now.

TL;DR: You still can’t play these games on PS4 or Switch and you still have to go through Microsoft to get these games. Therefore, they are exclusives.

    • Edward Turvey

No they aren’t. If a game requires me to buy your hardware to play it, it’s exclusive, if not then it isn’t exclusive to your hardware.

    • Yes it does. The Xbox games on the PC are part of the Xbox family. That’s the whole point of Xbox Play Anywhere. Hence the wording, Xbox. Windows is a MS product is part of their Xbox Gaming brand.

You gotta start remembering that it doesn’t matter if you play an Xbox game on the Xbox One, Xbox One X or Windows 10 machine, it’s an Xbox branded game. Thus is part of the Xbox ecosystem.

    • Edward Turvey

You are trying to redefine the term exclusive and i’m afraid it doesn’t work that way. If I don’t need your hardware to play the game, it isn’t exclusive to you. These companies like to use the term “exclusive” because it adds weight and value for marketing purposes buts it’s a lie, a lie they think will be accepted as the truth if they say it enough. Xbox games are not exclusive.

    • F J

“No they aren’t. If a game requires me to buy your hardware to play it, it’s exclusive, if not then it isn’t exclusive to your hardware.” So the PC games require Microsoft approved Software to play the game. You have to use Microsoft platform to play the games therefore they are exclusive to Microsoft platform (Windows). Also that list excludes many games for one Cuphead isn’t on the list… Also this article makes a very irrelevant point. LoZ BTOW could be removed because its one Nintendo old platform and new plat form. Essentially the Switch version is the “Definitive” version. Therefore any game that was exclusive to Xbox 360 and ported to the Xbox One is using the “Definitive” version and could be counted on the Xbox list. I get it Microsoft isn’t pushing out as much exclusives as people would like, but this whole article is grasping for straws. At its best, the article proves that Nintendo just has a robust 1st party system.

    • pokeblade101

You guys are using the wrong term. It can’t be an exclusive if it is on another platform. It has to be one platform only. You guys want to console exclusive not exclusive. You could also use Microsoft exclusive for those but that is just silly.

    • Howie Kearney

the fact they are available on windows 10 is a HUGE win for Microsoft so this is hardly a counter point to exclusivity. And yes it is a console exclusive.Actually a great thing here…..wish sony could say the same thing…..but no can only dream of that.

    • Edward Turvey

My point is that they are not Xbox exclusives.

  • Vagelis v

Awesome article in the most biased of ways. Why don’t you also focus on the fact that
    a) You are comparing a machine with a slew of third party games vs a machine that really has no third party ( or almost non), therefore it’s need for first party games is dire or else it really has no reason for exsistense.
    b) xbox has a fully realized ecosystem that consists of the best subscription, backwards compatibility and gaming-as-a-service which more or less every company out there acknowledges is the ‘way forward’, yet ms is actually doing it right now with ea access and xbox game pass.
    c) You really do have to stop with this ‘exclusive games’ obsession of yours. Xbox has enough of them out there to work in balance with all the rest of it’s ecosystem. For an article that focuses heavilly on ‘context’, you totaly seem to be depriving xbox one of that and just looking at part of the equation and not all of it.
Finally, a game like forza horizon or gow costs as much as 3/4 of that nintendo list combined so give it a rest. Let us not dwelve into what constitutes AAA production values for one company and the other. Ms have ori which is a 20 e-shop game and Nintendo would box that game serve it for 50-60 and still it wouldn’t have those production values.
In the end of the day you buy a gaming machine to play games on it, so please count how many of them ms will have from now untill the end of 2017 and how many Nintendo will have, and write a nice article on that someday.

    • Zoon Politikon

The article is about first party exclusives, and you’re talking about ecosystems. backwards compatibility, and $20 e-shop games. lol

    • Vagelis v

No the article goes on to talk about games without ignoring ‘context’, which is something it totaly delrives xbox one of. EA access= more games at value (only xbox one offers it), Xbox pass=more games at value (again no one elae has such a gaming based service).
Thereforw there is no need dor xbox to have that many exclusives since it compensates for it via an ecosystem. Secondly the number of exclusives it does have is impressive in itself given how full it is with third party and quality indy games. I think it has more games generally speaking than people have time to play.
Also when MS sells a game like ori for 20$ with those prpduction values and nintendo sells yoshi’s woolen barn or whatever it is called for 40, that is the only lol to be had here.

    • Zoon Politikon

Bottom line…regardless of ecosystems, $20 e-shop games, and backeards compatibility, Microsoft has not figured out how to develop a quality game. Look at the list of Nintendo’s games. It oozes polish, character, fun, and replay-ability. Nintendo knows what they are doing. Microsoft just throws money at problems, and gamers fall for it. Bottom line, brah.

    • Vagelis v

Really? I din’t realize forza horizon 3 or gow4 was that type of game. The ‘problematic type’. I think you are just being hyperbolic. And bottom line is a game like ori or cuphead ooz of quality and production values and they only are on xbox one. Try and see the big picture not part of it. Everything you so casually dismiss is you know, actual games.

    • Zoon Politikon

yup. the big picture is you’ll have a hard time finding a Switch for the next year or so. It’s a console that everyone wants because of the Nintendo brand. That’s the big picture. Nintendo makes money, lots of it, due to their first party AAA games. Everyone wants them.

    • Vagelis v

Fortunately i live in a small country therefore i was able to have it day one. And it’s fine for what it is. But it won’t provide me with assassin’s creed or forza horizon or gow4 or witcher 3. Xbox one has.
And xbox one hasn’t provided me with zelda or super mario oddysey and so on and so forth. So i guess everyone has something to give.

    • Gary

Ori is one of the best game ever. U do have a point when you mention Nintendo with sell it for same price as a full fledged AAA title. Hate Nintendo business practices – arrogant as fk

    • Peraa

But other platforms will also provide you that. Plus they will play better and look better on other platforms. Compared to the original Xbox One

    • ProAssassin84

PS4 is killing off Xbox. Just deal with it.

    • chance

Yet the best Xbox of all time is about to come out following the worst Playstation of all time.

      Sure the Xbox is dying.lol

Microsoft isn’t going away, just deal with it. There’s too much money here for them to leave.

    • ProAssassin84

Best Xbox of all time. lmao. It’s a Xbox One with better hardware. It still has garbage games, no developer support, always online hidden features and Terrible Ui.

Yes Xbox is always online and requires a internet connection something Microsoft doesn’t tell you. You want to play 360 games on it. You must prove you own it connected. My friend has a XB1 and he is constantly complaining.

Want to play with your profile Offline. You first have to prove its you before that happens.

PS4 you put the game in and play since launch. Microsoft snuck in DRM rather easily without back lash.

    • Wei Feng

They’re hoping the xbox will somehow crush the PS4 sales.

    • Ear4Muzik

No system is killing off anyone.. All three are making millions and will continue to do so regardless of what we write or say. I could win a million debates on here and it literally changes nothing about them still all making money, but we can still “pretend” one is crushing the rest because that’s what people on the internet do very well..

    • Infinity Gore

totes agree with you. no one realises that both the Xbox One/PS4 are doing a lot better than their predecessors. Legit its just the popular thing to hate Microsoft now.

    • One The One

Pramath is such a retarded Sony fanboy… I gave up on him already.

PMSL…and…Who plays a 1080p handheld these days when you got 4K smartphones lol.

  • Tech Junkie

Isn’t every Nintendo console strickly exclusives?

    • Johnay

Only the WiiU, so far the Switch is becoming a top-tier destination for indies

    • Tech Junkie

Ok, but are those titles out on Xbox or Playstation? If so not exclusive. But given how different the switch is from the Xbox and Playstation I imagine most games will be developed exclusively for the switch. Where the other 2 consoles are similar to each other and PC. So games are more likely to be developed for those 3 and less likely to get a switch port. Don’t get me wrong, I love the switch. Would love to see a game like fallout or really anything that isn’t strictly an fps shooter come to the switch. Don’t think a game like battlefield would play well on the switch unless in console mode with pro controller.

I also have a shield tv not sure how popular of a game console it is but given the similar hardware would be nice to see devs keep the switch and shield in mind when working on games for PC, ps and xbox

  • Saito

I’m not even surprised, that’s why I sold my xbox1 because there’s nothing on that console. It’s dry like the Sahara desert.

    • chance

It has over 1100 more games available to play than the switch.lol

    • The Legendary Waifu 3

compared to the best playing experience PC?

  • LDS

It’s always fun to watch how xbots get triggered when someone is pointing out the fact.
It’s not media or PS fanboys that led MS to kick off most of their first parties but somehow they always blame media or other platform’s fanboys who influenced nothing instead of going after the company.
In fact, there are clearly people with right mind who raise their voice about MS’ stupid policy but all these religious folks do is defending and sucking the company’s a$$ who pays them $0 in return. It’s quite fascinating how some people devote their time and effort on company that keeps flopping bad.

    • kma99

There are a total of 10 comments on this page and maybe half were before you made this reply. Your trolling is weak

    • Bakachiki123

MS did get rid of exclusives on purpose before though

And Sony Poopnies only have jrpgs with pink skirts to play hahahaha

  • AQUARIAN

Xbox let me down this gen. Got a PS4 a little over a week ago, and wish I would have gotten that to begin with. Looking into a switch once some more games come out.

    • kma99

If you think the Xbox let you down then why get a switch? I have it, collecting dust in my bookbag I carry to work

    • chance

The ps4 had no games until 2016. You didn’t miss out.
It also takes ages to download games and is slower online.
You may have been disappointed but you were better off.
This Gen has been a let down all around.

The switch hardly has any games.lol
the xb1 has over a thousand more games available to play today than the switch.

The wii u proved that exclusives alone won’t keep a Nintendo console up float. Soo far it looks like it’s going the same way as the wii u. Lots of exclusives but hardly any third party aaa games.

Don’t see your point on this one.

    • Yvalson Antoine

Pc has more than 20 x as much as the Xbox thousand isn’t impressive at all

    • AuricGoldfinger

Good for PC! the difference is XBOX is a console, a PC isn’t. I’ll gladly enjoy my xbox one x considering only 3% of gamers have a PC capable of playing those thousands of games in 4K/60 :-/

  • Quacking Intensifies

Exclusives suck. They are holding gaming back. Xbox is moving forward in hardware and games as a service. Nintendo and Sony can keep their One and Done exclusives. I’ll be playing service based games on the best network and single player beat-em-once and shelve them games on EA Access and Xbox Gamepass.

    • ProAssassin84

Lol. Did you vote for Konami to be in Casinos.

    • Holeybartender

Exclusives showcase the strength of a console. How is showing the potential of a console holding gaming back? Exclusives usually max out a console and shows third-party support ways to do the same.Exclusives show people the companies dedication to their consoles just as much as how many multiplat they get for it. Exclusives allow for a more focused direction in story telling, game design and creativity.

Exclusives aren’t holding gaming back, games as a service is what holding gaming back. Cranking out half-assed games to milk their customers with microtransactions and service fees. Sure all that is making them billions but it is degrading the quality of games, unlike the focused quality exclusives provide..

  • Quacking Intensifies

What do playstation and PC fanboys have in common? They Support Trump and are the Nazi’s of the gaming community. Nintendo is for children.

  • Holeybartender

Lol. What a hilarious article because it just screams click-bait and I see in the comments it worked. OF COURSE Nintendo will have more exclusives than Xbox,THAT’S ALL THEY HAVE! There’s a reason no one really considers Nintendo in competition with Microsoft and Sony and that is Nintendo rarely gets any multiplat games because of the weaker-hardware-in-exchange-for-gimmicky-gaming consoles they’ve put-out the past 3 generations.
Look at the Wii U compared to Xbox One,nothing but full exclusives.
    http://gematsu.com/exclusives/wii-u

No,I’m sorry but the only exclusive race war is between Microsoft and Sony.Sony has more than double the exclusives than Microsoft and would you look at that,PS4 is sitting pretty because of it.

    • You forget that Nintendo actually won 2 generations ago with the Wii. So “not in competition” doesn’t really apply when they destroyed the competition. Their only real failure was the Wii u. Switch is already on pace to destroy the XBOX ONE. Having no exclusives is a very bad thing. Especially with more people realizing how superior PC is to a any console, especially in regards to price-to-performance. Especially when you factor in online fees over the years and average higher cost of games and longer waits for discounts. PC+Nintendo has always been the best combo to cover most games but now more than ever it is factually the absolute best combo. There’s no clickbait. Everything stated in this article is fact.

    • mark0394

Do u not know the difference between facts and opinions??? This is an editorial piece that means its an opinion….

    • Holeybartender

And Nintendo has fallen out of the competition since then and it’s due to weaker hardware each generation after. Their strong first-party exclusives are what sustains them but the lack of specs compared to Sony and Microsoft for multiplats keeps them out of competition with them and only with themselves. They have multiplat games but the spec difference between them hinder those multiplats from selling as well as the other two. You don’t go a month without hearing how difficult it is to release a multiplat on a Nintendo system and that not only hinder sales but puts them on their own little island when the gaming market is more than just exclusives. Having no exclusives is a bad thing but not having or hindering multiplats is as well. Nintendo is in competition with themselves and Microsoft is heading that way without more first-party support. Nintendo has strong first-party support,Microsoft is relying on games as a service and Sony has every aspect of the gaming market covered.

    • Nintendo won console sales but the biggest selling titles of the generation were on 360 and PS3. The attach rate on Wii wasn’t too hot especially for 3rd parties. Sony and MS made a lot of money by selling fewer consoles thanks to licensing those big titles and its digital offerings.

    • Fernando Garcia

On the contrary, the Wii had a solid attach rate with an average of nine games sold per unit. And many Wii games also sold well too.

You’re also mistaken about the PS3 and 360 making money, it lost Sony and Microsoft tons of money.

  • Mr Xrat

Some real harsh truths being dropped about the woeful state of MS’ first-party and Phil Spencer’s continual mismanagement of third-party projects. It’s OK, Xgimps will tell themselves that limp emulation of 30% of the 360’s lineup will somehow make up for it.

Of course, I’m old enough to remember when their limp exclusive lineup of Sunset Overdrive and a (still) broken remaster collection was justification to get an Xbone. That was for two years!

      Redrum! Redrum!

  • Ear4Muzik

Sigh…. Such clickbait, are we seriously gonna pretend like the Switch wasn’t going to have strong Exclusive first party support? Knowing the problem with Nintendo has been third party support.. So them having more exclusives isn’t impressive as them having more third party support. These are game systems must we always be so divisive over systems that bring us entertainment.. I have all three (switch, PS4 and Xbox one) no regrets and I don’t need to bash any of them. Is it that hard to be an adult about this?

    • Infinity Gore

I don’t think anyone realises that when a consoles launches they usually have a ton of exclusives to entice people to buy the console… this article is just an excuse to bash a console really.

  • Kat

I don’t think you understand what the word “exclusive” means.

  • KapsLocke

It was very clear from the beginning that the ps4 would win this generation. The switch, unlike the Wii U, has its own appeal and will coexist nicely with the ps4. Xone on the other hand is a waste of money and space. Probably Microsoft’s last effort on console gaming.

    • AuricGoldfinger

“It was very clear from the beginning that the ps4 would win this generation”

-What exactly did SONY win? can you point me to the link that explains what SONY won? That would be much appreciated 🙂

“Probably Microsoft’s last effort on console gaming.”

Keep dreaming…Probably Sonys last effort in console gaming, considering Yoshida himself said he was unsure if there would be a Playstation 5.
