Sometimes life is hard but, even though games are often used as a form of pure escapism, game characters have a hard time as well from time to time. Whether by our orders or simply through a cruel twist of fate, here’s a list of the ten characters in gaming who seem to get the most amount of abuse thrown there way. This list may contain mild spoilers.

Most JRPG protagonists – Any JRPG

Picture 1 of 10

If it’s not amnesia, a mysterious past, bereavment, or some other kind of misfortune, the likelihood is your protagonist is some kind of clone or demonic being. Or you’re probably just not playing a classic enough JRPG. Either way, JRPG heroes stereotypically wind up being tortured characters indeed.

“…and he winds up getting turned into one of the very creatures he’s fighting at the end of the game”

how is that a MILD spoiler?

In all honesty, SotC is WELL past the time limit where spoiling it is a no-no. The game is AGES old, and if you didn’t play the game when it came out, or when your friends and game critics said, “Holy crap, play this game!” you have no one to blame but yourself.

it’s a mild spoiler because it doesn’t matter. the character doesn’t care what happens to him in the end, and he’s only killing the collossi to save the girl.

Yes, I admit, I’ve had to kill Lara Croft repeatedly to figure out how to solve puzzles, but you are forgetting three important characters. Dirk Daring will probably die dozens of itmes in multiple manners in the Arcade version of the game. Wario can’t die in at least one of his games, but he gets tortured in them all. Especially in II and 4. And Rick in Splatterhouse gets mauled repeatedly throughout the whole game and has an arm ripped off over and over and over and over and over again. And don’t forget the butler from Tomb Raider II & III. First, he gots locked in the meat locker repeatedly, then he gets shot at repeatedly. And Yoshimitsu is forced to commit hari-kari in Tekken when a player makes him. And let’s not forget how much abuse every Mortal Kombat character takes on a regular basis. And Arthur in Ghosts N Goblins must face some of the most difficult tasks of any video… even in his underwear. And think of the physical and psychological abuse Frank West takes in Dead Rising. And Goomas as a whole get abused more than any video game enemy in history…. except maybe zombies. Poor, poor zombies…

I feel your list is a tad better. Poor Frank West, so many zombies. That annoying guy calling you every two seconds, your friends dying, watching others commit suicide or die violently when your trying to save them. Having to deal with psychopathic peoples, not just a few…A whole SHIT load of them, over the course of just three days. And then becoming infected himself, only to be replaced by some dude in a yellow motocross suit.

LOL great list but you forgot Mario. Everyone has been mario at one point in time.

  • Iamlegend

Well. I think resident evil characters should be up there, They get fucked up by zombies, and there only means of healing is by rubbing a plant on there wounds.

demon / dark souls doesn’t hold a candle to how many deaths the harder contra games throw at you :|

  • someguy

You forgot Isaac from Dead Space, and Solid Snake, and also Mario.

  • mostly real

What about Mario?! How many times has that poor plumber been Dropped into a death pit, crushed by elevators, pushed into spikes, shot with grinning cannonballs, hatcheted(or hammered) in the head, bitten by turtles, pirana, jellyfish, and man-eating plants, and burned by fireballs and molten lava…. All for the sake of a girl and some gold coins?
After his adventure is over, if he makes it out alive, he is then constantly drug into death races on a miniKart(with no safety apparel) against friend and foes alike!
As if all of this wasn’t enough abuse, the live action movie they made depicting his story was horrible…this poor guy definately needs to be recognized here.

  • Rickko

Where was John Marston in this list? The government kidnaps his family, drag him back into the outlaw game full of murder, theft, etc that he tried to leave behind in the first place, faces gangs, criminals, kills countless people, then gets shot by the army for all his troubles. Then to make matters worse in Undead Nightmare he saves the world from a zombie plague and then comes back as an undead. Poor bastard…..

Lara Croft? Please,Have you ever played I wanna be the guy?

No Issak from dead space? Just in the first game alone, he travels across space to be hammond and kendras bitch.Fights through waves of necromorphs to get the artifact just to have kendra steal it from him, and then show him the GF he was fighting for had already killed herself.

Along with having some of the most brutal death scenes that I’ve seen

  • CyborgUnicorn

A couple items on the list seem a little lazy- namely anything generically labeled “yours” but Isaac is a good one. What about Snake from MG[S]? Once again a great character left out in favor of a generic “any jrpg who might be a clone” . Guy is created for war without having a choice! kills his friends, kills his father and mentor, kills his twin brother, over and over again over decades forced to fight off Metal Gear and the designers of an inevitable future war which just keeps on coming. He fights for the chance for people to have a choice, but he doesn’t have a choice, and never really did. People think of him as a Legend, but at times to himself he feels he is just a killer, and a lab rat in an endless maze. Deceitful set-ups, doppelgangers, Fox-Die, accelerated aging! and of course, he smokes cigarettes, which surely does a number on his lungs as it causes health to go down in most of his games.

Also in Snake Eater, Big Boss Snake has a rough time as well, getting beat up and tossed off a canyon bridge by His mentor/mother/loveresque figure after finishing the first mission of the game. After that you have to periodically enter the menu to heal your proken bones, cuts, burns, dig out bullets with your knife, stitch, etc. As you are in the jungle you can quite easily get leeches on you you have to burn off with your cigar lest they drain your stamina, snakes that can poison you, alligators that can knock you over or grab you and ragdoll you underwater. And you can eat mushrooms that make ou sick, and if you spin snake in the menu and exit he will sometimes throw up if he is full!

Super Mario, by far the most abused, overused and overabused video game character anywhere.
