Until Dawn’s Positive Reception Surprised Sony

After The Order, who can blame them, really?

Until Dawn PS4 4

One of the big surprise hit stories of this holiday season is the PlayStation 4 exclusive horror game, Until Dawn. The game, which plays like an interactive drama, actively shifting the course of the narrative in response to the player’s choices, has found a healthy uptake on the market, selling enough to chart on the monthly NPD for USA last month, getting great review scores, and generally finding a life thanks to social media and streaming services.

Apparently, none of this was actually expected by Sony.

“We’re super happy with the reactions from people, especially people who are streaming or posting videos on YouTube,” Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida said in an interview with Eurogamer. “It’s super fun to watch other people play, even after you’ve finished the game, because other people make different choices.”

“I’m very happy with how the game was received. I think everybody was caught by surprise by the positive reaction. That’s a really great thing for the future of the interactive drama genre. We’re a big fan of this genre. These games can talk to a broader audience. You don’t have to be good at playing games. You can even just watch your friend play the game.

“We believe this interactive drama genre can help expand the audience for console games.”

Of course, Sony was probably right to not expect much from this game- earlier this year, they released The Order 1886, throwing a massive marketing budget behind it too. The game got met with highly negative reviews, and bombed at retail. Sony probably expected the same from Until Dawn.

Thankfully, that is not what happened, and we got a great game instead.

I’m surprised too, because the game sucked. But that’s what you get when there’s nothing else on the market to compete with. Even Sony was like “What? You like this garbage? OK here’s a polished terd, enjoy.” 😉

That’s because PS4 gamers are starved for exclusive content thats good. After the order and Drive club bombing hard they’ll jump on anything.

This is what a desperate Xbox fanboy looks like ladies and gents.

Micheal, the fanboy dupe account that runs around lying for Xbox One using double standards against Sony. Driveclub outsold Forza 5, Forza Horizon 2, and Forza 6 so far which are Xbox One exclusives that you praise with your fake accounts. So if Driveclub bombed because it’s bad, what does that say Xbox One exclusives? Driveclub was hated on because of online launch issues, which were fixed long ago. The game is great now, with a ton of content added and still being added.

You say the reason why people bought Until Dawn was because Driveclub and The Order 1886 were so bad. This statement is so hilariously dumb because The Order 1886, Driveclub, and Until Dawn are all very different games belonging to completely different genres. Many of the people who bought Driveclub probably didn’t buy The Order 1886 because it’s a 3rd person shooter.

The Order 1886, Driveclub, and Until Dawn are all new IPs, something you Xbox fanboys don’t really understand because most games you guys praise are rehashes.

Don’t quit your day job Micheal.

One of the reasons why Sony was suprised is probably because of the hypocrisy in this industry from people with an agenda.

People were hating on The Order 1886 before it was ever released. People were calling it a linear interactive movie when it wasn’t. The Order 1886 has great combat and varied gameplay. The problem with it wasn’t the gameplay, it was the lack of replay value (multiplayer) and short length.

IGN described The Order 1886 as “look but don’t touch”. And yet, Until Dawn received high scores for being exactly what The Order 1886 was bashed for being. Pure hypocrisy.

You have to ask yourself, why the double standard and hypocrisy? Well it’s because the real reason why The Order 1886 was bashed was because of Xbox fanboys in the media with an agenda, specifically the Gears of War fanboys who were afraid The Order 1886 would outshine their beloved game even though the gameplay in Gears of War wasn’t really original to begin with and Microsoft were not the creators of Gears of War.

More hypocrisy is proven by how the same Xbox fanboys who bashed The Order 1886 were praising the Gears of War 4 reveal trailer despite the fact that the Gears of War 4 reveal trailer looked very similar to what they bashed in The Order 1886 trailers, such as too much walking, cutscenes, and QTEs. Pure hypocrisy.
