Xbox One ‘Lack of New Shipped Titles’ Leads To Decline In Revenues For Blu Ray Disc Manufacturers

“There have been very few introductions of games in the first half – new games in the first half of the year for the Xbox.”

The Xbox One’s general paucity in new releases in the first half of this year has been a well established meme– but like all oft repeated adages, there is a grain of truth hidden within it. There has been a shortage of new Xbox One releases compared to the competition, and Technicolor, the world’s largest manufacturer of Blu Ray discs, has felt the repercussions of that.

Technicolor’s CEO, Frederic Rose, said during the company’s most recent financial earnings call that the lack of new Xbox One games was to blame for the decreased revenue the company experienced last quarter. That said, he did emphasize that sales might see a spike with the release of the upcoming Xbox One X, which might lead to re-energized engagement with the Xbox ecosystem.

“However also in the first half of the year, we were impacted by the limited number of games titles that were shipped,” Rose said. “And you will remember that in games, we ship Blu-ray discs for the Xbox and there have been very few introductions of games in the first half – new games in the first half of the year for the Xbox.”

Hopefully, that turns out well- while there is still a general shortage of exclusives on the horizon for the Xbox, it is also undeniable that between Forza, Super Lucky’s Tale, and Crackdown, there is more coming up than what we have received so far.

What he actually said was .

“Looking at public numbers, there is about a 50% decline year-over-year. We believe that this is, in many respects, due to anticipation for the new Xbox that is going to be launched by year-end and we expect the games market to resume in the second half of the year.”

Actually, what he said was MS is hurting the gaming industry with their overwhelming incompetence, and their rather obvious inability to grow their dismal gaming division beyond the uninspiring new game sales data represented in the first half of the year, and they are now re-adjusting their projected revenue forecasts which have suffered from the decreased revenue last quarter, once again, due to uncle Phil’s continued incompetence in delivering new Xbox games. “Our gaming business now is more than $9 billion and growing profitably” – Satya Nadella
so wait…a gaming division that brings in over $9 billion a year and is growing in profitability is “dismal”??

    • GMB

Show us the link to that comment please. Because we don’t know if he was referring to net profit, revenue or the overall brand value.

Even if it is indeed about its profitability, that’s obviously not just the one from physical copy sales. It would be the net profit from physical copies sold, digital copies sold, Xbox live subscription, licenses fees etc..

If you’re interested in financials, why not just pull up the FS on Edgar?

    • GMB

Why should I? He’s the one making claims thus the burden of proof is on him.

    • Learned Handgun

This is a video game website, not a court of law. Burden of proof. seriously lol.

But I will admit, you’re right that just saying $9billion without reference to measurement is not very useful. However, I come here for video games not for investment decisions. Edgar is a much better site for that lol.

You still not over the Xbox1X announcement yet, it will be ok don’t worry.

No really ? That happens to be written in the article above ! I’m talking about what he actually said with regards to what the article says about here-

‘That said, he did emphasize that sales might see a spike with the release of the upcoming Xbox One X, which might lead to re-energized engagement with the Xbox ecosystem’

This is what he expect or hope, such decline is clearly not due to an evolution of the customers habit.

Xbox outsold 1.8:1 in the US, 3:1 in Europe, -50% decline year-over-year Blu-ray discs shipped.
2017 is, until now, a bad year for Xbox

    … Lmao…

Also, Why do they not mention physical disc sales are in decline because of digital ?

There is hardly any reason to buy physical on Xbox one when you can gameshare so easily, this also allows you to share EA Access etc.
Unless you have no Friends on Xbox there is no point in buying physical.

There is also the fact that if you buy digital on Xbox One you get the PC version for FREE on a lot of games

    • Mr Xrat

When NPD started including MS digital sales in May, guess what? Xbone games still weren’t charting.

“Why do they not mention physical disc sales are in decline because of digital ?”
Such huge decline is clearly not due to an evolution of the customers habit.

“There is also the fact that if you buy digital on Xbox One you get the PC version for FREE on a lot of games”
On the Xbox website, only 15 games available are listed, this is very few.

  • Mr Xrat

Unsurprising. And yet, Xgimps will continue to insist that their utterly meagre offerings are either enviable or acceptable.

  • Starman

You have to be kidding me.
First of all , disk will soon be obsolete….. not the bluray movie disc getting smashed by streaming , and digital downloads. Let’s not forget the gaming industry with digital downloads killing the hard disk .

These guys press disk for a living , but now they’re experts in the game industry … Sony selling games worldwide 1.8 million but they say Xbox one is the problem…. In a way they’re responsible because, most ppl on the Xbox buy digital… Sony is the only one stuck in the stone age still pushing disk …

  • zcar_driver

People still buy physical copy’s of games?
