XMB dropped for NGP

The xross media bar (XMB) used as the main user interface in the PSP and PS3 will not be used on the upcoming NGP due to a “social networking factor.”

Sony president Shuhei Yoshida revealed to Edge magazine that touch screen controls were a “key reason” for ditching the XMB. “That is indeed one key reason,” he said. “The other fundamental point was our desire to make this device very social network orientated: there are lots of fun games on Facebook, for example.”

“We wanted to integrate the social networking factor, the potential for friends to join in, interact at any moment,” he told Edge. “We wanted the entire screen to be part of that experience.”

“To do so, we thought it was important to let users keep track of their game even when they weren’t playing it – with the LiveArea, for example.”

Cheers to CVG for the info.

i think it’s just pages of those ugly bubbles…kinda like a smartphone with app icons. i like it on my phone, but i love the xmb. this makes me so angry.

  • I hope Apps, a SDK to make apps, and/or uploading to youtube software is available, especially on day 1.

While i do like the idea of being more socialized, I really dislike the fact that he used “facebook” as an example of positive gaming. Facebook has been run to the ground on my opinion. I welcome the change, because when they showed it off in japan it looked pretty smooth, so its cool, and it looks easy to use. just PLEASE do NOT follow facebook! use my chemistry professor’s philosophy “KISS”….Keep It Simple Stupid!!! lol

i have a facebook account, but refuse to play their “games”. i love how my mom or sister think they are “gamers” since they grow some damn crops or trade foodstuffs.

That’s probably one of the most basic functions of the display; the ability to change up how your home screen looks. For example being able to put a picture in the background, or hopefully being able to run a video on the background while being able to reorganize those icons. I also can’t wait to see what they’re going to do as far as themes go. Aqua Out!!!

this may or may not be a good thing. I hope as the release date gets closer, we find that the new interface is just as easy and enjoyable to use.
