That's the problem though. From what I've read so far Sony isn't using the Cell in the PS4. If they do it wouldn't be that hard to make it play PS3 games. But if they use a new processor they'd have to include a Cell or use some kind of chip or software. It wouldn't be cheap.

ps2 to ps3 was a bit different story, it was sd to hd, so the ps2 game that ran on ps3 didnt look that good, and many gamers really didnt care about. but ps3 (hd)games running on a ps4 their u can see immense difference, better anti aliasing, improved fps 30 to 60 and and overall improvement in graphic and gameplay, so if sony have exclusive model that can play backwards compatibility i dont mind spending extra $50, but i am very sure it wont cost $50, it may cost more. ps3 was actually not really expensive back in 2007, but its biggest problems were the lack of third party and first party (exclusive)games. but i do agree more that backwards compatibility i also prefer extra ram. my wish/dream or guess is that sony is going to use the same cell processor - with even more power. many developer have become expert and have spent millions $ mastering by using full architectural power of cell processor. developer will only be happer to have the same processor and by not learning new sets of codes for from complete new processor. use the same processor then we will have backwards compatibility, if their is not one, then its time to shift to pc ....

It's easy to say that but Sony tried making the PS3 be everything and look at how much heat they took for the price. I think most people are too shortsighted on console price myself. The PS3 wasn't too expensive. But this time Sony can't make the PS4 so expensive. If they have a choice of spending that $50 on backwards compatibility or more RAM I vote for more RAM.
