EA have fiddled with micro-transactions on only one game so far–Dead Space 3. But during their recent conference on the PS4, they revealed that micro-transactions are an important part of their strategy, and all their games in the next generation will feature it.
That’s not all, they have even said that “consumers are enjoying and embracing that way of business.”
Now this statement is a little disingenuous because they have implemented it in only one AAA game so far.
“We are building into all of our games the ability to pay for things along the way; to get to a higher level,” chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen revealed during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference.
This is a way of monetizing software and considering the online pass and the rumoured $69.99 price point for new games next generation, consumers have to think carefully of where to spend their valuable dollars.
There also needs to be a strong backend for processing credit cards so that the entire thing is profitable, but Jorgensen thinks EA has that covered.
“If you’re doing microtransactions and you’re processing credit cards for every one of those microtransactions you’ll get eaten alive,” he said. “And so *Rajat’s team has built an amazing backend to manage that and manage that much more profitably. We’ve outsourced a lot of that stuff historically; we’re bringing that all in-house now.”
*Rajat Taneja is the CTO of EA.
