It’s likely for a few reasons. Zelda and Mario are top tier franchises which pushed Switch hard in its first year. The second year it needs franchises like Metroid, Animal Crossing, and Pokemon (though this usually takes time since Game Freak develops for the current system after its successor debuted). Not only that, but in 2015 was the last time anything appeared on a Nintendo device (Amiibo Festival and Happy Home Designer). That was 3 years after the New Leaf debut, and now that 2015 was 3 years ago, it’s enough time to have developed the next in the series. Not to mention any of the staff who also worked on Splatoon 2 has been free the past year to now work on Animal Crossing. It’s highly likely to hit this year.
