SSD would be a possibility but SATA3 isn’t as robust as the transfer rate between CPU, GPU and memory.

The RAM/memory has to be on the motherboard because of the amount of speed it takes the CPU and GPU to interact with the memory for textures. External drive is waaaay too slow for that, ur game would run like 2 frames per second! Also, harddrive is permanent memory, RAM is temporary for whatever the game needs at that moment
