Not all glitches are bad.

Video game glitches are far more common today than they used to be back in the day. Or, it certainly seems like it. Today, what with the internet existing and everything, not only is it possible to ship a glitchy product, and get it into an acceptable state later (see also: DriveClub, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Assassin’s Creed Unity, Battlefield 4), but word about these glitches also spreads faster than before.

Really it only takes one small error of coding to work its way into the game during the development process in order for a glitch to become present. These errors just happen by mistake and slip by programmers and the quality assurance testers. Or yes, sometimes, they are products of a rushed or lacking development cycle.

Usually when we spot a glitch it becomes a waiting game for developers to patch and fix the error. This leaves gamers stuck at certain locations, failing textures or a limited amount of time to enjoy an exploit within the particular video game. Very rarely do we see these glitches stick around within the game or ultimately help improve gameplay. Although, on those rare occasions, these glitches that end up in the video game code can sometimes actually spark creativity for future installments. We hunted down some pristine video games that greatly improved gameplay all thanks to these mistakes and glitches, and ended up becoming fixtures of pop culture.

Note: Some videos and images have been used only for representation purposes.

Quake

Do you know that Team Fortress, the popular free-to-play video game by Valve, is the result of a mod glitch in Quake? Or well, the original Team Fortress game is, at least (yes, there was an original Team Fortress, did you just assume they jumped straight to Team Fortress 2? Even Valve isn’t that bad at counting). Three friends decided to mod the game to allow team class-based battles. During the mod, the programmers found a glitch that would change the color of a player’s name to the opposing team’s color. Instead of fixing the glitch, the programmers felt it would be neat to include classes that would act as a spy and take out enemies secretly.

After releasing the mod online, Sierra Entertainment noticed that the game had potential and presented it to Valve Software. Valve Software loved the idea so much they asked the programmers to make a mod of Team Fortress while using the Half-Life engine. Team Fortress went on to become a massive success and two of the original programmers of the 1996 Quake Team Fortress mod still work for Valve Software.

Games that look mind blowing in their first trailer but ended up being downgraded in the end.

Video game developers and publishers have a marketing team that knows how to sell their titles. But what they show or tell is not always the truth. Sometimes pre-launch video game trailers, demonstration and screenshots can be deceiving, all in the name of hyping up discussions and ramping up sales. It wasn’t all that long ago that UK’s ASA or Advertising Standards Authority attempted to cut down developers and publishers from using CGI cutscenes in hopes that consumers are not persuaded to purchase a video game thinking the CGI cutscene was actual gameplay.

While I absolutely hate the term deceive, developers and publishers have to sell the game, rake in enough pre-orders before the game launches so the truth can be stretched and manipulated. Which video game titles were the biggest offenders of such practices? We have compiled a list of games that we think were visually downgraded compared to their initial showings.

Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Watch_Dogs

Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher: Ubisoft

Watch Dogs is an open world action-adventure video game that places players on the mean streets of Chicago. Ubisoft demonstrated the world as immersive with players having the ability to hack into practically anything that holds electricity. This game got hit with several delays as Ubisoft struggled with developing the game on six different platforms.

Back during E3 2012, Ubisoft demonstrated a gameplay video of Watch_Dogs which was essentially our first look into the potential of current gen consoles and high end PCs. But upon release, it was drastically different. This resulted into a massive uproar claiming Ubisoft was guilty of false advertising. Even rumors began to spread that the developers purposely downgraded the graphics for the PC version of the game to match the console versions. However unused files were found within the PC version that allowed players to ramp up the visuals although it was no where closer to the E3 2012 build.

We wouldn't mind playing these again on the Xbox One.

Microsoft first released their dedicated video game console back in 2001 and labeled it as the Xbox. The original Xbox lasted all the way through 2008 before being discontinued. Although the console was not able to hold itself against the stiff competition that was Sony’s PlayStation 2, it still managed to deliver a number of critical hits such as Halo and Fable.

In 2005, Microsoft released the original Xbox’s follow up console, the Xbox 360 which became a huge success winning over in some areas that the PlayStation 3 could not. Now as we enter Microsoft’s third-generation console lifecycle, there are several video game titles we would love to see remastered and released on the Xbox One. We have selected fifteen awesome games that deserve to get the remaster treatment.

Note: List is in random order.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Series)

Developers: BioWare
Publishers: LucasArts

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes place 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire with players having to face off with Darth Malak, a former Jedi as he brings in an armada of Sith against the Republic. This game is a classic and the particular series is still looked highly upon to this very day. Because Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is shaped by choices made, players can fine tune their story and character uniquely.

From the very start, players can pick through different character classes and are able to make adjustments to their skill sets or perks as they gain experience.

Metal Gear Solid and Bully for the PS4? Count me in.

The PlayStation 2 is without a shadow of doubt one of the greatest consoles ever. The console has sold beyond expectations and managed to stay in manufacturing for over a decade. Over its 13 year old history, several AAA developers crafted over 4000 games with most of them being stand out titles. With the rise of remastered games on the PlayStation 4, one would love to play some of those games in 1080p resolution, 60 frames per second and visual fidelity.

We have picked a few titles from the PS2’s massive library that we would like to see remastered specifically for the PlayStation 4. Some of these games did received remastered editions for the PlayStation 3 but we love them so much we would purchase them all over again on the PlayStation 4.

Note: List is in random order.

Dark Cloud (1&2)

Developer: Level-5
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

Dark Cloud was originally meant to be a PlayStation 2 launch title but was delayed and released the following year. Upon its launch, the video game was generally well received as a hack-and-slash action RPG. Level-5’s Dark Cloud was based around a fantasy world in which an evil genie was cast against a village but before the genie could destroy anything, a fairy manages to secure sections of the city in separate large orbs.

During the attack, the orbs become scattered about and it is the player’s task to search each dungeon to locate the different orbs and repair the city. Dungeons are procedurally-generated where players will battle against different creatures and pick up loot. A neat little feature added into the game was a thirst level. Not only did players have to face off against the creatures located in each dungeon but they had to watch their thirst meter as it slowly drained causing their health to diminish.

Before the character’s HP became empty, players either had to drink water from a pool to immerse themselves in. As we mentioned, this is a hack-and-slash style game but developers had also tossed in quick time events during battles as well. Level-5 went on to make a sequel known as Dark Chronicles which had its own unique story and characters with similar gameplay mechanics.

A waste of time and effort.

If you’re planning to hunt down some of the toughest achievements for Microsoft’s video game console, the Xbox One, you’re in luck. We have compiled some of the hardest achievements you can earn but having said that, these achievements will have you asking this single question, is it really worth it? From those that require insane grinding to those that are near impossible to complete, we take a look at fifteen Xbox One achievements that are really not worth your time and energy.

Note: List is in random order. Some images and videos are used only for representation purposes. Some videos might have trophies instead of achievements but the methodology to unlock them remains the same.

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Developer: Infinity Ward
Publisher: Activision, Square Enix
Achievement: Completionist
Achievement Points: 25G

Normally when it comes to first-person style shooters, the hardest achievements are usually centered around beating the game on a harder difficulty. That, or gamers must fight each other to claim the top spot when it comes to online ranking. However, for Call of Duty: Ghosts the hardest achievement has to be the Completionist. In order to unlock it, you’ll have to complete each challenge during the Extinction mode.

Each wave of enemies will come with random challenges; one of the tougher ones would be the leper challenge. The leper resembles the other aliens within the game mode but is larger, glows red and doesn’t attack. Locating him down while not getting killed can be a pain but if you’re lucky enough to get a few friends to jump in and help, the achievement could be a bit easier to manage.

You are probably better without these.

Trophies are an awesome way to show off your game accomplishments such as perfectly executed headshot or getting hold of all the collectibles that the game has to offer. Some happen to be easy to unlock while others are mind blowing headaches that are not meant for the casual gamer but only for the truly skilled one. In short, these trophies are just not worth your precious time and effort, so beware! For those of you who are looking to get a few easy trophies for your collection then you’ll want to stay away from attempting these.

Note: List is in random order. Some images and videos are used only for representation purposes.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Sharing is Caring

This Sharing is Caring for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is purely luck based. Some may find this trophy easily obtainable but for the rest, this will be insanely impossible. In order to obtain the trophy, gamers must discover three items which are a Chest, Royal Convoy and a White Whale. These items are randomly planted within the game. Also gamers must be logged into PSN along Ubisoft’s Uplay using Ubisoft’s servers. If you discover the items and are not on the required services then you’re back to starting all over again with randomly generated spots. Talk about a headache!

The PlayStation 4 is leading the current console cycle but Sony has work to do as far as console's features are concerned.

When Sony introduced the PlayStation 4 to the masses during E3 2013, the crowd was overjoyed and for a good reason. Coming down from the complete train wreck that was Microsoft’s Xbox One press conference, it was clear that Sony may be gamer’s last hope. Back then, the Xbox One featured strict DRM standards where the console was always online, forced bundle with Kinect and even pre-owned video games would not work on the system.

Since then Sony’s current gen console has seen great success but there is always a bit of wiggle room that Sony can go back and make adjustments. So what does Sony need to fix and improve on the PS4? We have jotted down several points below and if you anything else to add, let us know in the comment sections below the article.

Note: Images are only for representation purposes.

Ability to Turn off DualShock 4 Controller LED

How many times must we complain about this issue, Sony? Adding the touch pad to the DualShock 4 controller is great and so many new ideas and gameplay mechanics can use it and really make gameplay unique. However there is one little problem. The bright LED light that glows like the sun. This thing can glare your monitor while playing a video game and that is a big no in my book. Why do I have to be subjected to this nuisance when Sony could just allow me to turn off the LED in the first place?

The console received so much backlash that Microsoft was forced into going back and making some major changes. First off the console was made to be always online; meaning players were not allowed to play any video game titles offline. The DRM was so strict that no used or pre-owned video games would even work for an Xbox One, how lame is that?

To top it off; the Kinect was forcefully bundled with the Xbox One which meant a bigger price tag. Fortunately, Microsoft realized that and the Xbox One went under drastic changes to match the PlayStation 4’s price point and offer features players simply wanted. Regardless, the Microsoft Xbox One, much like every console available for purchase in market today, has enough room for improvements. Here are fifteen updates and changes we wouldn’t mind Microsoft implementing for Xbox One.

Note: Images are only for representation purposes.

15. Faster And Smoother User Interface

Microsoft could really speed up the user interface on the Xbox One. The system on paper sounds great, a console home screen where players can snap apps and display everything easily on one page. However, when using these features you’ll find that the system can suffer from some major slowdown issues.

While restarting your Xbox One can bring the system to a more stable state, don’t expect it to stay that way for long. This feature should be on Microsoft’s priority list for the Xbox One. First make the system’s UI readily available, stable and fluid while additional features can be looked into later on.

Making a great video game trailer is an important key in selling a product but convincing gamers to try it out just through a trailer is tough. Within just a few short minutes, developers must explain the video game in all aspects. From story, tone and gameplay it’s no easy task within the short amount of time given. Despite the rumors, reviews or friends’ recommendations, the trailers below simply sold us and possibly you on the video game. Here are the top video game trailers that nailed the formula and completely sold us on picking the video game up right upon release.

Note: List is in random order.

Gears of War

Developer: Epic Games, People Can Fly

Publisher: Microsoft Studios

Platforms: Xbox 360, PC

Soundtrack is very important when choosing how to set the tone of your video game. With Gears of War, you couldn’t have put down a better song to match the emotions the characters are having within this world. If you haven’t played the Gears of War franchise on the Microsoft Xbox 360 then you’re simply missing out.

Players take on the role of Marcus Fenix, an old soldier who was written off and thrown into prison after abandoning his military post years ago. A total of fourteen years have passed since the Emergence Day, a date marked for when the Locust Horde declared war on the human race. Now reinstated to the military, Marcus Fenix is apart of an elite squad set out to attempt in taking down the alien threat with Gears of War being the first title in the trilogy.

Unfortunately, gamers are lied to and are given expectations for video games far more than what developers are able to deliver. Over the years, we’ve seen some small fibs to gigantic lies that stirred an uproar in the gaming community. Here are the biggest lies that video game developers and publishers tried to tell you but ended up getting caught.

Do you agree with the list or do you have anything else you want to add to the list? Let us know in the comment section down below.

E3 2010: Kinect Star Wars Failed Presentation

The Kinect Star Wars video game was developed by Terminal Reality and was shown off during E3 2011 in what was supposed to be a gameplay demo. However, it was quickly debunked after the in-game character moved before the presenter. Take a look at the video above and watch how the movements don’t match up.
