Doom 4 is in development right now, or at least based on a latest tweet by Carmack, we think it is. Carmack said that the next iteration of Doom will support AMD Radeon 7970’s, Partially Resident Texture feature.
This is what he said: “7970 hardware virtual textures are limited to 32k, so it requires layout changes to avoid tex crossing. Doom will support.”
Now, yes, we know you don’t know what that is, so check out the nifty little image below.
PRT is supposed to be an expected feature in next-gen game engines, so it is really impressive that Doom 4 will support that. It shows that id haven’t been demoralized yet after the poor performance of Rage, and are going to come out all guns blazing with Doom 4.
