SemiAccurate is reporting that the codenames for the PS4 and Xbox 720 have changed. The original codenames were released few months ago in different scenarios and it’s something that people expected to be final.
Durango and Orbis were the codenames for the Microsoft and Sony consoles, but they have been changed to ‘Kryptos’ and ‘Thebes’ respectively.
Kryptos is supposed to be a codename for the Xbox 720 and it is unclear why Microsoft changed it but I guess that’s a normal process of IP development. Kryptos uses the Oban architecture which was reported to be delayed earlier, and it looks like it is still delayed and there is speculation that the console may miss 2013, although, that seems unlikely according to a latest Bloomberg rumour.
Sony has also changed it to Thebes which is a Latin name and this may not be the final name for the PS4. Maybe due to all the accurate reports, they were forced to change the names.
The PS4 is running on AMD components made at Global Foundries or at AMD itself. However, this is something that is too early to say because even Sony may manufacture hardware themselves to reduce cost.
The consoles are rumored to be releasing next year. Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
