8GB GDDR5 isn’t the only plus point; the decision to use it has meant Sony haven’t had to use 1.6 Billion Transistors of the APU/SoC’s Die on embedded ‘band-aid’ RAM like on Xbox One.

Therefore Sony have spent the extra transistors on an extra 50% GPU Power, Additional Compute (GPGPU) Queue Granularity, doubling the ROPS (Fillrate) etc.

Sony have a GPU with 50% more raw power, double the fillrate, and additional compute capabilities. They have a unified high speed memory architecture which acts as a unified address space and will undoubtedly use custom memory controllers in line with the HSA spec to minimise latency issues for CPU-GDDR5 operations.

They have a smaller console that’s £100 cheaper, far more iconic and likely still using a smaller die.

Smart Bets and Japanese Engineering have paid off here.
