The Witcher 3 had many strengths, but the one that got it the most attention was its excellent side quests, which wove into the main narrative in surprising ways, and often ended up being more memorable than many of the game’s main quests. That’s something that CD Projekt RED wants to accomplish with Cyberpunk 2077 as well- in fact, it’s something that they’re dedicating a lot of attention to.

As per quest designer Phillip Weber, after the development of The Witcher 3 and for the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED went ahead and created an entire team within their larger development setup that was dedicated entirely to making side quests and optional activities in the game’s open world. As per Weber, this is something that the game benefits from hugely, with all of these activities being “cool and unique in their own way.”

“After [The Witcher 3:] Wild Hunt, we actually founded a completely new team, the open-world team, which is creating some amazing content to fill this world with things that are meaningful,” Weber said (via GameSpot). “We want to make this [so that] you can do many, smaller things around the city, but they’re all cool and unique in their own way.”

Senior level designer Miles Tost also chimed in, saying that these side activities are made “fun and exciting if you pack them up in a cool story.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is out on April 16, 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. CD Projekt RED recently confirmed that they’ve started development of a post-launch multiplayer mode for the game.
