Diablo Immortal Backlash Causes Blizzard to Change Social Media Profile Images Back to Diablo 3

Blizzard desperately trying to contain the negative reception to the upcoming Diablo Immortal.

It’s extremely common, bordering on basically being industry practice, for social media outlets dedicated to a game developer or franchise to change their profile and banner pictures to whatever the newest release, upcoming or otherwise, is, as a way of implicitly advertising and endorsing it. And so, Blizzard too had changed their social media presence to reflect the upcoming Diablo Immortal, the mobile game entry in the long running franchise they announced back at BlizzCon last week.

However, it seems the immense backlash to that game has made them want to walk back on that decision, because as of yesterday, Blizzard’s social media presence has changed right back to Diablo 3. I assume a lot of this is done to minimize potential damage to the brand by associating it with a game that had such a negative response that the company’s stock actually dropped in the wake of its announcement.

Whether or not Diablo Immortal deserves this kind of hate will be evident once it launches on iOS and Android devices. Right now, it doesn’t actually have a release date announced, so we don’t know when that will be.
