Carmack is very talented coder IMO. He's very good at thinking outside the box and creating engines that end up standing the test of time. However, Id as a company is a very lack luster development studio who hit big with doom and have been riding Carmack's coat-tails every since trying to reclaim that achievement. Not one game has come from the studio since Doom (some argue that Quake would fit this spot, but I say Doom was better than Quake, oh and wolfenstein while good was slaughtered by doom) that has shaken the world as a game and not an engine.

When Id was doing stuff like Quake 2, people were impressed with the engine. Valve ran with the Quake engine (I believe the Q1 engine, modified with bits of the Q2 and their own tweaks) and thus we got Half-life which most people remember because of the game, not the engine. Quake 3, it was all about the engine. Doom3? Yep all engine yet again. Had it not been for such a forward thinking engine, Doom3 wouldn't of been such a big thing. Since Doom3 though, Id has REALLY begun to slide with their titles. Quake 4 was easily forgotten, Quake Wars was a sad POS and then Rage came out... to mixed reviews. In the end most reviews praise the engine and graphics it provides as key points... but again we get mediocre story and ambiance amid a decent engine with solid mechanics.

Sadly... Carmack's engines have helped Id continue through the years. Without him they prob would of been under by now.

I don't think listening to what John Carmack as to say is worth it.
I think he doesn't know his graphics anymore or he's too old to be a graphics king. He's more like the legendary graphics man.

he said a lot of things about ps3 being more powerful than xbox 360 and also saying xbox 360 does better things than ps3.
also saying that unlimited graphics is not possible:/
