I find skyrim does a good job of telling you some of the locations of caves or castles are but then it's up to you to go in there and search every nook and cranny of it to find the collectables and treasures without anything telling you where it is and finding secret leavers and rooms

Yeah I thought the game was one of the best for the year but I agree that the hidden collectables were not its strong point

Yes, yes, yes I miss the old days of gaming

I want to say, I really liked the game, but I realized that these maps kind of killed some of the exploration fun.

I like the old metroid/zelda style where a reasonable number of special upgrades are hidden, some very easy to find, others much more complicated to obtain... yet not overly dense that there is something under every rock and three.

Yeah the only thing you get for finding the letters is just a trophy/achievement and nothing else that actually adds to the game.....and yeah for most of the game I didn't know you could buy maps from stores to show the locations of collectibles and most of the time I would just be walking along and I will see a cave in the mountain side and that was one of the best things about this game was exploring but then when you get the maps all of that fun is taken away from you :(

I did a lot of the side quests, and found all the Japanese soldier's letters (man these guys write so much)... I was hoping better katana would eventually come, or some other special upgrade... :-( I think if they left only 1/4 of each of those (not all bases need to have an assasination mission as well as a kill some animal mission.. or any side quests at all, it would make some bases special, since many are optionnal anyway) ... and do not put special items like the japanese letters or other items of that nature on a map you can buy in the game, let people "find" them if they notice a small cavern entrance or hike a mountain for no apparent reason.

Yeah they got super repetitive but I still did them all and they did sumthing like that in the thief game where u might walk past a window and over hear sum body saying they lost sum jewelry near a sewer or sumthing and it was pretty sick!

The side quests in FC3 became a bit repetitive in the last half of the game or so... how many special hunts and assassinations should you be doing? same for the Japanese soldiers letters, etc. I would rather have much less of them, but they would be truly hidden on the map (I.E. they are not displayed on any in game map, etc.) maybe some NPCs could give you hints to the where abouts of some "mysterious" caverns or something... but you need to find it by yourself, it does not register as a side mission or anything.

Otherwise, I loved FC3! I just would not re-play it because of all the tediousness...
