What made Final Fantasy great was that it was original, not
a Assasin’s Creed/Elder Scrolls ripoff. Also Final Fantasy VII is a part of
gaming history. Trying to surpass it is like saying “I’m going to write a
book that will surpass Hamlet!” or “I’m in a band that will surpass
the Beatles!” Granted, my fave FF is Final Fantasy VI, but FFVII is still
a masterpiece, and is NOT overrated. You don’t create a game with the intent of
surpassing a masterpiece in any type of media, such thinking is egotistical on
Wada’s part. I love the old school FF (IV, VI, and VII especially) because of
Active Time Battle, great music, memorable plot and characters. An open world,
real time battle Final Fantasy is proof that FF is still dead. These changes seem
like an attempt to pander perceived western tastes, not innovation, and I
staunchly disapprove if this is true.
