Gamestop CEO Paul Raines has revealed that it absolutely makes no economic sense in banning used games for the next gen consoles and it’s a vital market that thrives on consumers.
Earlier there was a rumour where it said that Sony and Microsoft won’t allow used games to flourish on their consoles, but Raines thinks otherwise and has rubbished that rumour.
“The $1.2 billion trade credits are funding growth of the industry. If you look at our PowerUp Rewards community, just in the United States, not including Europe, Australia, and Canada, there’s 24 million consoles in people’s homes,” he said in an interview with Gamespot.
“That 24 million consoles at current trade prices is about $1.8 billion of trade credits that we can use to drive the launch of Wii U, PS4, and Xbox next. So our console makers know that and they don’t want to miss the opportunity to use that to drive the market. And it doesn’t make economic sense.”
He also revealed that the pre-owned business won’t go away anytime soon, because it’s a consumer issue and it’s something that is very vital.
“The preowned business will not go away any time soon. Even if new consoles don’t play preowned games, people are going to be playing PS3 games, and we still have a ton of people playing PS2. That’s a huge part of our pre-owned business,” he said.
