Actually, Every XB1 will be (not is) a dev kit at some stage in the future. If the Xbox indie push is ‘part of their DNA’ (Microsoft’s words), and been in the works for years. then why is there such a _huge_ discrepancy in the actual numbers of indie games coming to PS4 vis-a-vis XB1? Proof’s in the pudding. Sony’s pro-indie stance is good for XB1-only gamers though – as it’s forcing them to change their approach and get more indies on.

there is a lot more to developing on a console than the dev kit/hardware. you need lots of support and people and input from the platform, especially as a relatively strapped indie dev. it’s very much a working relationship/partnership, and thus the people you ultimately interface with are very important to your experience. Like him, I hope he is wrong about the ID program just being a song and dance and not genuine. But his concerns about passion are very important. It’s no different than hiring someone. Why would you hire someone who isn’t passionate about your work?

Either way, MS is very late to the party. They should have announced Indie Support way before Xbox One’s reveal, instead of Gamescom. In fact they should have done what Sony did and reach out to developers few years prior to next gen launch. Every Xbox One’s a dev kit but how many Indies got their hands on one prior to launch? Well at least they changed it, better late than never right? Hopefully the indie scene will catch up on Xbox One.
