Metal Gear Solid is one of the world’s most popular and important gaming franchises, but before the original Metal Gear Solid launched on the PlayStation to superstardom, there was a pair of Metal Gear games released on the MSX computers and NES. Those were good games, but they aged poorly enough that they aren’t exactly playable by modern standards. They are also so old and obscure that most Metal Gear fans probably haven’t even played them yet.
A group of dedicated fans, however, have been working on a full remake of the original game, one that Konami just green lighted, with the stipulation that they not sell it (since that would violate IP rights).
This is in stark contrast to how most companies handle fan projects- Square Enix, Capcom, Nintendo, among them, all usually have fan games made on their properties suspended. But Outer Heaven, who is heading the development of the Metal Gear remake, is moving ahead with the full blessing of Konami.
Nice one.
