Uh oh, it looks like Nintendo hasn’t designed this thing properly, as shutting down the Wii U during firmware update will brick the console. The PS3 actually allows people to restart the update if power goes out during a firmware update so why is the Wii U like this?
Many people are reporting bricks due to an accidental outage and it’s something they can’t really do much about. The Wii U is a 2012 console and such a thing should have been kept in mind considering the huge update size for the system which will take hours to finish.
It’s an one time update, so it’s not clear why Nintendo decided to go this route instead of just pre-installing it in the system. It’s being reported as 1GB in some places, but still that’s pretty high, that’s like installing an operating system.
Ben Fritz, who is a reporter for La Times, tweeted that he had bricked his system due to power going out during the update. Now that must suck because the customer service is not available on Sunday as well.
