After underwhelming sales since its launch in November 2012, the Nintendo Wii U has slowly but steadily seen some improved sales numbers in the past few months. However, according to the latest Media Create charts, those past figures paled in comparison to this week’s when Mario Kart 8 released.
The Wii U managed to sell 19,312 units (in comparison to 9,024 units last week) as Mario Kart 8 sold more than 325,000 units in its debut. It was enough to beat out Nintendo’s own 3DS XL which sold 18,776 units this week and the Sony PS Vita which sold 12,859 units.
Despite inFamous: Second Son being in the top ten chart for software sales, the PS4 sales are still stagnant. The console sold 6,508 units this week, down from last week’s 7,565 units. The PS3 did slightly better in hardware sales but not much more.
For now, it remains to be seen how far the success of Mario Kart 8 can carry the Wii U in Japan. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
