The Metal Gear franchise continues to move from success to success- Konami’s latest financial report indicates that lifetime sales of the franchise have now topped 49 million units worldwide- possibly off the back of the success of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which released last year to great acclaim and reception from the market, in spite of some obvious issues.
Metal Gear was one very important part of Konami’s financial performance, which saw ¥49.4 billion worth of revenue, with ¥9.1 billion in operating profit. This performance came on the back of company’s health and fitness category, as well as its digital entertainment products, which includes mobile, handheld, and console games. Konami’s pachislot business saw a decline in this period.
Konami did indicate that they intend to use their original IP to push their pachislot offerings, and to counter the decline that they have been experiencing- implying that the Metal Gear Solid 3 pachinko that they revealed earlier this year, much to the chagrin of fans, may not be a one off.
