Yeah but that’s in addition to freedom of use which is what owning the game is. If I want to use my game disc as a coaster noone is going to stop me.

And that’s fine and dandy,for the online use of it NOT the main game itself. I buy a console and buy a game for the console then choose to use online features or not that’s my prerogative but the game itself I should have unfettered access to it.

No, you don’t own the game. You own the right to use the game in a way that is specified. Big difference. That’s why there’s something called the EULA or End User LICENSE Agreement. No one really owns the games they “have.”

This kind of option is ini other games out there, mainly MMO’s. There is usually an option to download everything or save bandwidth and download only as needed. I’m sure MS will give that choice as well.

@sgt_hammertime:disqus is correct. If you give gamers a choice as to where they can play the cross-platform games, then the system you choose becomes less about the hardware and more about the games. It would allow gamers to look more critically at what each platform offers beyond the cross-plats and make a good decision. In that case, I would say that we’ll see more of a resurgence of true exclusive content everywhere instead of all the silly rhetoric like “timed exclusive” or “console exclusive.” Though, I do argue that gamers choose their system more based on their hardware no matter what unless they’re choosing Nintendo. They’ve always only been about the games. No one else can say that.

Yes online services are like that but you’re not paying for a service,you’re paying to own the game. It doesn’t matter if it’s digital or physical games,if I paid for it then I should own it outright.
