"Sony's flagship console for Full HD/4k gaming."

Full HD gaming, yes but full 4k gaming? No,Sony clearly stated that the Pro was only a half-step to 4k gaming all the way back in PS4's initial launch. That's where the confusion of fanboys set in,they think the Pro is Sony's attempt at full 4k gaming so they compare how XB1X is much more powerful than the Pro is. It's the same confusion as when they were comparing PS Now to Xbox's backwards compatibility when it clearly wasn't the same thing. PS Now is a streaming service meant for multiple devices not bc and the Pro is a console meant for 4k streaming (which was Sony's goal in the first place because that was the main platform for 4k at the time) and upscaled 4k gaming.

It's new territory for both. It is indeed interesting that they both decided to take this step with no knowledge of the other's plans, if that's actually the case.

Although the similarities end there if Microsoft intends to discard the "generations" model and move to an iterative one, while Sony sticks to the traditional model.

I'd imagine Microsoft will have a hard time executing that vision if Playstation continues to be the lead platform. I'd think the Xbox one X will be abandoned by most publishers except maybe Microsoft itself and some sports games, not long after a new Playstation and then a new Xbox come out with a vastly improved CPU in addition to the usual improved specs, so basically both being a more traditional generation-based model in practice, just with varying degrees of backwards compatibility.
